      @@bobh.4580 and I had a large antenna that was over 30 years old and could no longer pick up the PBS station out of Milwaukee over 55 Mi away that went on a trash VHF channel in 2012 with the Government auction/repack. (The antenna fell apart as I took it down - so it's not a good comparison) . I got this antenna specifically to pick that station up - and it does. Picks up the uhf bettery too. Yeah, you just take your time. Since you're retired you've probably got more time on your hands then I do! The main thing I can tell you to watch for is making sure you locate the VHF low elements with the gap at the bottom and the clamp on top. That will ensure that you put the phasing strips on the bottom where they won't get in the way !

The closest I know about how cold it can get up there is that as a young Airman, I went to tech school at Chanute AFB and once Fall hit, it could get damned cold and I hung out in my dorm room drinking hot chocolate. Thanks for the video, it greatly assisted me in assembly as the instructions although not terrible were a little confusing.
    I bought this exact new model to replace a Televes Ellipse Mix.
    Reason is transmission towers located at 68.7 miles away 3* separation with a 3rd tower at 82 miles. Antenna height is restricted to 20 feet but mine is exactly 22.
    The performance is outstanding. Picture clarity with no pixelation on all 3 towers. Local towers within 40 miles are not over amplified.
    Even best on 2 channels, cell phone interference is now a bad memory as the filters in this model cured that.
    Surprising is the light weight on a really well engineered structurally sound antenna.
    Extremely satisfied especially with the back-end ability which receives a tower 52 miles almost directly to its rear. The Ellipse could not accomplish this feat but am using it on 2 other sets & have it aimed at that particular tower although it is set st 12 feet on the same mast 10 foot lower.

    Thank you for this video. I watched through it at least twice before I even opened my 148383 that I purchased from Solid Signal, So I had a good idea what I was in for upon assembly. I found it to be heavier in the rear, not balanced very well after installing the VHF boom and moved the mount brackets one more element to the rear for better balance. I'm in the Detroit area so I needed a VHF low capable antenna.(for Channel 3 WHNE). Its mounted to the Chimney 25-30 feet up on a Channel Master rotator.
    Performance:
    AMAZING,I replaced a Winegard HD8200U MONSTER with this one and I'm amazed how much better it works at about HALF the size--I'm only 11-15 miles from most Detroit towers to the North so I like to aim the antenna South and pick up Toledo just like I did as a Kid in the 80's but was UNABLE to receive Toledo 24 w/the Winegard and w/the Winegard South Detroit stations got choppy, w/It north I was loosing Toledo Stations. With this Televis south and the preamp plugged in I get ch. 24 at 100% along w/all other Toledo stations and ALL Detroit stations loud and Clear.
    However I had to add an omnidirectional (round)FM antenna and another coax cable to the mast w/this Televis due to FM filtering The Winegard picked up FM however directionally. A worthy Trade off for the better TV performance and MUCH smaller size of this Televis.

Because I needed to go high I simply didn't want the wind load found on the big VHF low antennas.

    Bob, I would like to thank you very much for taking your time to show us this. I am on the verge of purchasing this very same Televes Antenna. I'm in Simi Valley , California 45 miles west of the TV transmitters atop Mt. Wilson. I recently purchased a Winegard HD7694A which I have mounted on a 10 foot mast atop my roof. I use it with a mast head preamplifier then a 4 output distribution amplifier to supply 4 TV sets in the house. I get 70 plus channels of stable reception using the Homeworx TV converter boxes. My problem , I cant seem to pickup a reliable signal for PBS Channel 28 which we watch a lot. I think I need a larger antenna. I may purchase it this next week. Thanks again !

    • @Davesworld7

      I envy anyone who has a shot at Mt Wilson. That's the Mighty Mo of broadcast tower locations. Channel 28 is confusing, who joined or took over whom, are they in Burbank and do they still broadcast on RF Channel 28?
      I do not like that a lot of PBS stations just took the buyoff money and shut down before the repack. Personally, I feel that the sub 1ghz frequencies can't carry enough bandwidth anyway for what is being sold by the cellular carriers now and expected by the consumer so I think it was shortsighted. Give us our high UHF channels back!

      @@bobh.4580 I did get the Televes antenna. It works great. I use it directly plugged into a Tablo box connected to my home wireless router . The signal is then picked up by Roku deivices connected to the TVs in the house. This eliminates all the signal eating cable and splitters normally used with an antenna. The Tablo box also features a very nice program guide and recording function. I have the antenna on top of a 10 foot steel mast. The winds can get pretty bad here in Simi Valley so I will need to get back up on the rood and install some guy wires to help stabalize the large antenna.

    • @jagr9228
      @jagr9228 9 місяців тому +1

      A year later, funny thing, we have high winds in the fall and winter here in Simi Valley. My 10 foot mast required some guy wires at 3 points half way up the mast. This helped to stabilize the antenna in high winds. The high winds also did some minor damage to the VHF boom extension at the rear of the antenna. The boom actually rotated or twisted about 30 degrees causing the VHF elements to be come misaligned with the rest of the antenna. It looks like heck. I have yet to determine if the VHF electrical connection has been damaged. This did cause some loss of channels too This is due to the flimsy plastic insert joining the rear boom to the main antenna. I may have to replace that plastic insert with something stronger.

I have two stations, almost 180 degrees apart, on RF 33.. and the front station has a slightly higher dB signal than the back station...Any chance this can just capture the front station, as currently it just shows "no signal" on a regular antenna, say Antennas Direct 91XG.

      90% of the time you need to have the boom perfectly level, and you can do that with a carpenter's level. There are exceptions where you might want to aim them up to clear a tree or large building. Usually a little bit is enough. You would definitely have to experiment if you have some obstruction in your line of sight.

I get 41.1 41.2 41.3 41.4 41.5 41.6 41.7 41.8 and 42.1 42.2 43.3 also low VHF 4.1 4.2 4.3 4.4 5.5 5.6 I guess they haven't heard of repack in my area (central MN) They all come in pretty good but sometimes i will have like all the 4s drop out or all the 41s dropout or all the 42s drop out for 1 to 5 days. I live about 90 miles west of the twin cities. They do not have 3.0 yet. Since 3.0 is supposed to be easier to receive. Is there an antenna that will pick up 3.0 that far away and cover all the channels I get now with an older outdoor antenna with a 24db gain indoor amp. JIM R

      You are naming "Virtual channels" not "Real channels" or as I call them "RF Channels" So, yes, the FCC eliminated every channel above RF36. Those frequencies are now used by Cellular phone companies, mainly T-Mobile for 5G. Anyhow, your "Virtual Channels" are allowed to use the old channels numbers to keep the consumer familiar. The average viewer doesn't know the difference after a scan.

      Interesting, since you made your comment we installed one of these on a friend's Tower. He picked up WZZM in Grand Rapids Michigan all over 100 miles away across Lake Michigan. I'm sure it's the lake enhancing the reception but I thought it was interesting. Oh, and by the way the antenna was pointing 90° perpendicular to Grand Rapids. The signal was obviously reflecting somehow. But we watched it for a few minutes and there was no pixelation. VHF will do that though.

  • @Noone9227
    @Noone9227 Рік тому

    I’d like to know how well this does on low VHF channels. I have the original version, and it’s not worth crap for low VHF. Excellent for UHF, but not good for VHF esp low VHF.
    To me, this is still a poor design for low VHF channels. What’s essentially supposed to function as a dipole for low VHF is in effect an elongated loop almost like a UHF antenna. It’s connected to the two ends on the bottom and loops around connected through on the top. The updated antenna now has two of them instead of one, but one of them doesn’t connect at all and acts as sort of a reflector or director.
    On the version I have, low VHF without the amplifier actually has a net loss according to the specs. So, the amplifier is doing all the work.
    I have a low power channel 2 in my area 25 miles away. Height above average terrain is 387 feet with one edge diffraction. I have never been able to get it. Yet, someone DX’d the channel from Fort Wayne to Poughkeepsie, NY not long ago.

    • @bobh.4580
      @bobh.4580  Рік тому

      @@MoparTech yes, especially being 20 miles away. I get RF5 from Milwaukee, I am 49 miles south. I also pick up RF4 & 6 from Chicago and I am 40 miles north as the crow flies, so to speak. RF6 is a Franken FM that uses an ATSC 3.0 hybrid video signal. I always have to keep in mind that it's a very low power station yet I pick it up here. I'm surrounded by trees and I'm on the Lake Michigan Shoreline only about ten feet above lake level which is a disadvantage compared to my surrounding area which is much higher elevation. So, I'm very happy with my VHF low from this antenna.

    • @bobh.4580
      @bobh.4580  Рік тому +2

      You are correct the earlier version 148381 was much weaker, however I installed one on a friend's house and aimed it at Milwaukee and he picks up RF5 quite strong, he's probably about 40 miles south of Milwaukee. So it did have its place, so maybe 40 Miles is the max the 148381. As for the improved 148383 version. The new version is much better for all the bands but especially VHF low. 5dB better! You are correct in assuming that it is a reflector on the VHF-LO extension, but you are incorrect in assuming it is like a UHF element.

    • @H.T.2forever
      @H.T.2forever Рік тому +1

      Yes correct....
      The VHF-lo antenna elements are not really "like a kind of UHF loop" design. But are actually called "folded dipoles."
      Which function electrically like conventional straight dipoles, but with a four-fold increase in the center fed feedpoint impedance of 70 ohms nominal to 280 (or approx. 300) ohms.

    • @bobh.4580
      @bobh.4580  8 місяців тому +1

      @@H.T.2foreverthanks for that explanation. One element is a folded dipole and the other is considered a reflector. The design was to keep a minimal footprint for shipping and wind shear. They know they can make a big VHF low antenna like the Winegard 8200U but then the shipping can become an issue as we all know what has happened to shipping costs in the last few years.

For anyone reading this there are now only 35 RF channels 6 MHz wide. Not to be confused with "virtual channels" with many many more sub channels to choose from. Out of about 30 RF channels in my two Market areas, I get 146 subchannels. One thing I believe you got wrong since the digital transition the virtual channel number does not have to match the station number (RF channel). I hope this clears up some confusion on your side.

I could also employ a screw gun and make it go faster. A few minutes extra assembling this antenna is well worth the performance. Consequently, if you don't need VHF low or even VHF high, the UHF only version goes together in minutes. So, if you're absolutely not mechanically inclined, you could take your time read the instructions and actually make it happen. Not a big deal whatsoever.
