ATTENTION!! To those doing this with minimal tools like me....you dont have to remove the tire-rod end....you can just turn the power on accessories mode and turn the steering wheel as you need to get to the bearing bolts. Also, you dont have to remove the caliper from the rotor. Get a bucket or something and you can take the caliper bolts out and remove the rotor and caliper together (if your rotor comes off easily) and set the intact on the bucket, back towards the fender wheel.
I turned the wheel outwards, used a small sledge hammer and hit the bearing from the inside outward to break the bearing loose....threading the axle nut flush to axle, and tapping axle inward before should be done first I should say too.
Total time was about 1.5hrs with no power tools. Smooth as butter now. This video helped a lot. There's just no need to remove tire-rod end.

please help.
when I drive I hear like a thumping sound from the front. don't hear it until I pick up speed above 30mph. the thumping gets louder if I'm turning left or right even slightly.
so I watched UA-cam videos and to test wheel bearing I jack the front end up and with on the left and right and I got no noise. but when I grab top and bottom I hear metal thumping sound and wheel bearing is moving. the arms or tire rods never move. even when I spin the wheel I hear a woooo sound. so could this really be the wheel bearing?
Taking the tie rod off gives you a little extra room to turn the knuckle and get to the bearing bolts and it also prevents you from having to leave the car in accessory mode which sometimes can drain the battery if you don’t remember to turn it back off after turning the wheel.
@@luischapa307 He removed the tie rod because it was part of a separate video he was making, sometimes they do several different procedures , and do some editing later, to make several videos at once, he mentioned that in the video.

Just did my 2015 Nisan Altama. Video helped very much. Only problem I had was the abs sensor didn't want to seat in. Loosened the bearings and was able to jiggle it in then hand tighten, pulled the abs out, then torqued to the proper specs. No more roaring sound!

Some unnecessary steps if your only concern is the wheel bearing:
1. There is no need to remove nut from the tie rod.
2. The brake caliper comes off as one unit w/pads.

Thanks for the video. Helped me a ton, but it was the most challenging DIY projects I've done yet. To the viewers, If you are doing this job I highly recommend an air gun for the 32mm nut. Also, the bearing itself was rust welded to the backing plate/knuckle. It took me forever to get it off and for a while I didn't know if I was going to get it done. Car was a 2014 Altima with 120K miles. I was able to get the part from Amazon for less than $50. Had it installed for 6 months now and working great.

How long did the whole project take you to complete and what is your level of mechanical experience. I'm considering DIYing it. My local shop quoted $3-400. I have done oil changes and brake pads and rotors only. I thought maybe I could save some money and purchase a couple of tools I don't currently own to help with the job.
@@siberwolf33 Well this job is a 3 on ease and experience but sometimes climb to a 7 for patience. When considering buying tools consider amount of usage and price. Some tools like the caliper piston pusher is only 7-14 dollars so I bought the basic one. Other tools can be rented for free. But if you do decide to do DIY a good quality torque wrench or two comes in handy..But be careful on going cheap with torque wrench and if you do keep your receipt.

Question: if I don't have a torque wrench is it okay for me to tighten up nicely or will there be consequences for not tightening it up to the specific torque he mentions?

Hi my friend very good detailed video. I have a question. I have a 2008 Nissan Altima and I hear clunk noise when turning the wheel left or right and I just replaced both CV axles left and right and I still hear clunk noise every other day when I turn steering wheel. Now keep in mind I bought 4 brand new axles 2 sets in the past week thinking the first axles were defective but I don't think all 4 new axles are defective. I've already spent a lot of money and the noise is still there. Do you know what might be causing the clunk noise when turning steering wheel ?

If not it can be that your endlinks are bad/loose.
Clunking noise doesn't come from bad axles. Bad axles click when turning. They will only clunk if they're literally about to fall apart. After weeks even months of clicking.
Clunking noise comes from either bad ball joints, tie rods, stabilizer links or strut mounts.
Your axles were probably good. If boots weren't torn and grease didnt come out and you weren't hearing click click click click when making sharp left or right turns. Then you wasted alot of time and money! Oops!

Is there a reason why a wheel bearing puller wasn't used? Also, does the tie rod end need to come off? I just replaced mine and I couldn't stop it from spinning when I tightened it back down. I had to have the shop torque the tie rod end nut down since they needed to do an alignment anyway. The bad part is, they tried charging me FULL labor for replacing the tie rod.
How different is this for older models? I have a 2004 Altima, been having trouble finding a decent vid on how to replace the wheel bearing/hub for that

The bolts can work their way back out if not tight enough.
Buy a manual or Google.
Not a big fan of harbor freight tools but if you don't use them too often, a basic half inch torque wrench can be purchased there for cheap. If you do regular repairs, I suggest a better quality wrench
Got to the 4 wheel hub attach bolts with a socket and straight extensions. No need to take the tie rod off to turn the knuckle. Those bolts are easy money I had to separate my tie rod with a pickle fork the last time i did one on this car and just finagling those wheel hub bolts out is much easier than separating the tie rod.
Impact guns are your best friend
Should the car be on Park or Neutral (or ?...)when you take off the wheel bearing?
I was actually able to tap the bearing out without too much force using a smaller hammer. I completed one side, but on the other the axle spindle is seized to the bearing...any tips?!
I bought a mapp gas torch heated the bearing for ten minutes put the axle but on the axle, put a socket in the but and beat it with a 8 lbs sledge hammer, and repeated the process untill free!

How similar is this to a 2014 Maxima?
The two bolts that hold the caliper on are different. One has a rubber seal at end, the other has nothing. Which goes on top? Bolt With or without rubber? What is purpose of the rubber tipped Bolt? Thank you.

How effective are those slide hammer bearing removal tools? Vs hitting with a hammer...
Rainbow Doghouse the truth is that you probably won’t be able to remove the wheel bearing assembly with a hammer without the bearing removal tools if your bearing is in there for more than 5 years. And some abs sensors are glued in (2009 ex.) so you may have to replace it.

omg I just replaced both front wheel bearings on my Nissan altima. looked up the average time it takes to complete and everyone was like 2 or 3 hours...... well it took me 2 days 10 hours each day, never again!
you can speed through removing the wheel, brake kit, abs sensor within 10 mins but the brake rotors and wheel bearings is where you will spend all day swinging a hammer(didn't have a sledge😭)
If I just want to replace the stud will I have to take off the whole wheel assembly?

Thanks for checking us out. Anytime a tie rod is replaced or removed from the vehicle you will want to have a wheel alignment completed to bring the steering and suspension angles back to within specifications. Hope this helps you out. +kevin

Doesn't seem to be any adjustment on the tie rod so in this case I don't "think" that'd be necessary but then again there really is no need to remove that bolt to begin with..

Hammering spindles to pop out ball joints...proffesional
It wasn't a spindle it was a knuckle, it wasn't a ball joint, it was a tie rod, and that has been the common way to remove a tie rod for decades. What do you do, fiddle around with a puller, a fork?
I just got my axle and wheel bearings changed on the front tires and now my sensors are on and my speedometer not working or gas gage…….can someone tell me what might have happened?

Before hitting hub to loosen it I would have put the nut back on the threads of the axle to prevent damage

My friend who has a lot of experience working on cars says you only need to use the torque wrench on the spindle nut and the lug nuts. Is he wrong?
Follow-up question; I put the ABS sensor on a little prematurely and sheared it off when the hub was tightened. I know it's easy to put on a new one, but am I going to have to extract the part that sheared off inside the hole?
every bolt has a specific torque requirement. Using a torque wrench saves you from having a bolt back out it also saves you from stripping or breaking a bolt
6:04 Instead of hitting it like that you can flip the castle nut upside down and hit it with a rubber mallet to pop the tie rod out. Not making dents in all your stuff :)

mechanic told me you had to replace whole hub this was on a '11 altima. is that not true?
He did replace the hub, and bearing, it comes as a unit, the part that holds the lug nut studs is considered part of the hub, the bearing is inside.

You say 32mm wheel bearing nut is 32mm and someone else said it is 1.25". Which is it?
It's 17mm the 4 bolts holding the hub just did my maxima yesterday

I followed the video step-by-step but now I have the VDC and slip and ABS light on
"Maybe" you were too rough with your ABS sensor or it just happened to crap out in the process.
Another maybe could be to check your brake fluid, mine goes on as my pads wear down due to the fluid level accommodating for the pad wear. Another option might be to try disconnecting your battery for a few minutes, turn your headlight switch on for a moment, then back off and then re-connect the battery to see if it clears.
Those things can be finicky..

Forgot to lube up the ends of the brake pads before placing them inside the brackets!

I just take the caliper off complete and hang it, and just turn the steering wheel and not take anything else off
