F2.8 vs F1.8 vs F1.4 | Will there be a difference in bokeh? (Prime vs Zoom)

- You've probably heard the recommendation to shoot in primes to get the wider aperture. And when it comes to selecting the lens, you probably have the option of picking either F1.8 or F1.4.
The latter usually costs double and weighs double. So the million dollar question is, will the bokeh be significant enough to justify that extra costs?
0.00-1.26 Intro
1.27-3.19 Primes vs Zooms (F2.8 vs F1.8)
3.20-5.29 Primes vs Primes (F1.8 vs F1.4)
5.30-6.43 Conclusion
I would like to clarify that I am aware that my sharpness test of only comparing the lenses at the widest aperture may not be the most comprehensive method of testing lens overall sharpness but in this video, I am operating under the assumption that people who buy fast primes would probably want to shoot with the widest aperture.
To keep this video as short as possible, I decided to do what I did and if you would like more comprehensive reviews, do drop a comment and I would consider it.

what surprising me is, why this video didn't become so popular. such an awesome video bro, keep going, once u will hit what u deserving. kudos
Thanks man. Your kind words means a lot. That’s the reality of small creators. No matter how much work you put in, or how “good” the video is, you won’t get much traction at the beginning of this journey. Just have to keep trying. But appreciate the support from you! 😁
Bokeh on 1.4 is definitely softer, it's not just how much blur there is. It's the quality of it. Guess we perceived that differently.
😃
this was such a well put together video, thank you!!
Thanks for watching! :)
Well done. This is a question I've been asking for a long time.
Thanks man! I too was always curious but now I can confidently go for my 1.8 😁
awesome video man and love that you used dogs as it made me smile 😄
Great video! Very informative. I've been shooting videos with a Sigma 24 - 70mm f2.8 for the past year and I recently got the urge to purchase a prime lens with f1.4 because I want creamier bokeh. This video answered a lot of my questions. I'll consider getting an f1.8 lens now. Sony makes an affordable 50mm f1.8 lens. I'll give that one a try. Thanks!
Thank you for the support! Yeah. F1.4 is nice but I tend to prefer 1.8 for its benefits. I would recommend the 55 f1.8 tho. The 50 is known for noisy and slower AF. Iq is not as good either. Worth doing some research 😁
It's interesting, sometimes the 1.4 aperture focal range is actually so narrow that parts of your subject can be in focus, but their hair or arms extended might not be. So I think there is a contextual choice to make too, in whether you want to have just the background bokeh'd away only or parts of your subject bokeh'd out too. Sometimes the 2.8 might be more forgiving for things like video work as it gives a little more leeway if your camera body hunts for focus a bit (like Lumix's etc). Great video though. Sub'd :)
Thank you for your support! I do reach out to my zooms so much more haha
Xièxiè, Brother Lau‼️ So helpful! 💛🙏🏼
Thanks for watching my friend 🙏
thanks for this...i agree the 35 looked quite similar, but i also felt the 85 1.4 really looked a LOT better not just a little bit...
I think one can only see the difference with a side by side comparison? If you show me a picture on it's own, I probably can't tell the difference. And more importantly, my client can't tell the difference. 😂 I really enjoy the lighter weight and the smaller form factor of the 1.8. But can't deny the thought of the 1.4 is very sexy and tempting.
You sound like a belter from the show called "the expanse " lol nice review btw !
Hahaha. I have never heard of that show 😂 but thanks for watching 🙏
@@BernardLau1991 look it up I recommend it actually its rated 98% on rotten tomatoes really good show and you'll understand what I mean
Hahahhahaha good show
Excellent video Bernard. Great review of all the lenses. i am a photographer and i think the lower the aperture the higher the quality but its good to test the lens before buying them.
Yes. I think those high end 1.4 lenses might turn out to be sharper once you increase in F stops but I did a more superficial test only at it's widest because I would want to shoot at it's widest if I owned the lens hahaha
Thank you so much. This was excellent.
You're very welcome!
Interesting conclusions and very different from my own opinion. On the wider 35mm I can definitely easily tell the f/1.4 shot apart. It looks much, much better to my eye, even despite the reduced sharpness. In the 85mm comparisons I'd be happy with either.
Hi! Thanks for the comment 😁 I do think that a difference can be seen when comparing side by side. But if you were looking at a picture without information, I think it would be tough to tell if it’s 1.4 or 1.8 haha
@@BernardLau1991 I don't think you'd be able to pinpoint the exact aperture, but wide open tends to lend itself to a certain uncanny character of the image. When I see a photo taken at 35mm that I intuitively really like, whether it's my own or someone else's, it's usually shot on a high quality lens at f/1.4. I think wider angles need faster aperture to really make a subject pop. Longer glass like an 85 it's usually OK at f/1.8, at least to my eye.
@@youknowwho9247 I’m usually not very observant I guess 😂
@@BernardLau1991 I'm not sure it's necessarily about being observant. I mean, it's not like me or anyone consciously scans photographes with the eyes, thinking "hm, what aperture is this". It's just that some images make me go "wow, the subject really pops, that's a nice shot" - and others don't. The ones that wow me are usually shot with very wide apertures.
Sidenote: This is a statement about portrait/wedding/event work. I've seen street photography shot at f/8 that's incredible. Not everything has to have a blurred out background.
@@youknowwho9247 It’s really a subjective matter. Personally in these examples I didn’t see much difference in terms of bokeh between 1.4 and 1.8 on the 35mm.
I would even argue that some 1.8 looks better than some 1.4 lenses at the same focal length. Look at Arri Signature Primes for example they are 1.8 but blow these 1.4 photography lens out of the water when in comes to bokeh. Because the design of the glass have as much a role as the aperture.
Also the most beautiful cinematography, close up included is not often shot wide open but closed down around f4.
Generally speaking bokeh is to make up for lack of interesting composition by throwing everything out of focus.
Experienced DP and photographer tend to shoot with deeper depth of field.
Interesting. Great comparison! Thanks for making it!
The thing is though the differences are only visible because you are comparing them side by side. Nobody will see it in real life - I'd go for f1.8 if the money is an issue or go for Sigmas which are much cheaper than GM lenses.
Hey! Thanks for watching. That’s totally true. 90% of clients won’t notice the difference as well. But you know how we camera people are. We can’t sleep at night knowing our images aren’t at it’s sharpest 😂
@@BernardLau1991 to be honest if you showed a photo shot with a f1.8 lens to a hard core pro and told him/her that it was shot with f1.4 they wouldn't know.
By the way - love how much sharper the photos from zooms were in your tests.
@@BernardLau1991 So true:-) I have been pining after the sharpest lenses possible, and have in the past spent beyond my means to achieve this. For me, the irony was when I presented my last video footage to a client she commented on how old she looked particularly in the closeups, and had to go back into FCP to 'soften' the footage of her a little. Similarly, with the bokeh - even though some of the comparison images achieved slightly softer backgrounds, this meant both eyes were not in focus, so in many cases, it may be more appropriate to dial it down:-) As beautiful as the shallow depth of field is, such a thin focal plane can also mean missing focus more so has to be used with real intent.
@@arhon888 Nowadays, I lean towards versatility and practicality haha
Thank you for this informative video, looks like a Canon 24-70 f2.8 will be enough for me as it would be impractical to switch between different lenses inside a busy event with lots of things to shoot.
For event def the 24-70. Unless you have two camera bodies. But that said, even when I have two camera bodies, I use the 16-45 and the 24-70 haha. I love the convenience.
I was a long time user of Sony 35mm 1.8. The lens is very very good in my opinion. I did like 35mm so much that a have decided to upgrade into Sony 35mm 1.4 GM. I wasn't sure if 3x the price is justified. But after initial shots I was blown away. The 1.4 GM has a much better contrast, better controlled CA, more subtle bokeh. I was surprised that difference between 1.8 and 1.4 could be so huge in terms of exposure - actually I suppose that GM has much better T*.
Concluding: difference between 1.8 FE and 1.4 GM is not only about aperture. There is many other qualities that in my opinion justifying the price. Mostlikelly Samyang 1.4 wouldn't be so much better from Sony FE 1.8...
100% Agree 👍
1:47 the focus on the 24-70mm is on the dog left eye, while on the 35mm it's on his right.
Good eye!
Thanks for the video mate!
Thank you for watching!
I always like to watch comparisons. But after a moment I realize I get in the same trap forgetting what f really means. So have it in mind, that it's a bit irrelevant to say 2.8 is sharper than 1.8, and 1.8 then 1.4, because that's really the point of it. Just have that in mind, and I know many people use 1.4, but it's really coming down to edge to edge possibilities of particular lens. The f stop will already say how many meters the image is in focus.
😀
Very informative video, thank you😀
Thank you for watching! I’m glad it helps. 😁
Decent video there Bernard!
Thank you for your kind words 😁
Such an awesome video!!! thanks!!!!🙏 😎
Thanks again!
great video, thx for sharing!
Thanks for the support 🙏
I guess using a 1.4 for portraits isn't too great an idea. DOF is so shallow one eye will always be out of focus.
Thank you for watching my video! :) But a lot of people still like that 1.4 tho haha
Even at f2 I have that problem f2 is enough imo after testing and research but I really like boke balls... I think we have to ditch the lens design and figure out something new because I feel like Im contantly fighting physics...
Thanks for the video 😊
Welcome :)
3:25 for F 1.4 vs F 1.8
You're welcome.
Thank you!
I say if you are just starting, you can be pretty happy with a zoom like de sigma 24-70 f2.8 and a prime of your favorite focal length (35mm for me)
Haha. I own the 24-70! And I also have the 55mm prime. I’ve been eyeing the 20mm prime next 😂
@@BernardLau1991 sounds like a good move
Would you recommend Canon 17-55mm f2.8 or Sigma 18-35mm f1.8?
I quite like the Sigma 18-35 f1,8
@@BernardLau1991 Thank you
so interesting, thanks!
Thank you! Hope you found it helpful 😁
good video, get the difference clearly.
Glad it helped!
Wonderful video and really well explained. I think you got a bad copy of the 85mm f1.8 since It was proved to actually be sharper than the GM at 1.8 yet at your video it is seriously soft
Ah I see! But yeah. Sometimes it’s hard to control such tests when the performance can vary from lens to lens 😕
You had a faulty 85 1.8....I'm pretty sure on this one
Need to try another one in the future haha
I sir ,im from Bengaluru, India.i want buy new Sony a7C camera for small events, party and for personal use. Give me the best all in one lens for everything. I'm just beginner photographer with passion. Please suggest one lens for my sony a7C.
24-70 sigma art lens. best value all around lens.
Surprised to see the distinct lack of sharpness of the older Sony primes.
Yeah, that's why they have an update to most of them hahaha
@@BernardLau1991It's pretty wild, come to think of it. Although I haven't checked, I don't remember people complaining about the lack of sharpness back then... But Sony's huge full frame push was new and exciting at the time, and I suppose our standards have also evolved
What will be the difference between 40mm 2.8 macro and 50mm 1.8 nikkor lens..??
Hi. I don't have experience with those two lenses personally but I think this video will give you the answers you are looking for. ua-cam.com/video/GUb8vHbBHXA/v-deo.html :)
Massive difference in 3D pop too.
Definitely!
Oh yeah I noticed. In very high aperture bokeh becomes more watery like and when lower more ice like. Probably at extreme wide aperture it becomes gas like XD
😂
Good job
Thank you :)
really surprised by the 35F1.4.
Kinda a yes and no for me. Cos that lens is really old already and probably why they are coming out with a 35mm Gmaster version. And I didn't test it at higher aperture which might cause the image to go sharper as it usually does. I did my testing only at the widest aperture haha
Nice movie, but terrible music. It makes you nervous. Just no music is much better. 👍
Thank you for watching my video! :) Will do better on my future videos haha

hi. Unfortunately, I have no experience with either lens so I can't comment :/
Ok ☹
What about 35mm f1.8 on Sony crop sensor? How does crop factor affect bokeh?

get a 1.1 lens shoot at 2.8.....
I don’t think there are many such lenses haha
@@BernardLau1991 there is one cheap kamlan f1.1 50mm for 150€ but its only sharp at 2.8 thats why sony and the other big brands wont make such a lens because ppl would be outraged by the quality.
