@TCW524 The way I interpreted it was completely at face value. He IS a god capable of riding giant fish off into the sunset, but that's the least interesting aspect of his character. It's part of the series themes of, "People have different sides to them that you don't see, and it's ultimately up to you to find the best parts." It's the reason I love this show so much. Demi-god of matchmaking? Yeah, but lets talk about ho he's an 8th year student with no degree. That's more interesting.
The Tatami galaxy has the best ending of any show I've ever seen. It really doesn't feel complete until you've seen it through, but that scene in the final episode with Watashi running always makes me cry man. He's been trapped in this endless tatami realm, and he's been trapped in his own insecurities and hesitation for so long, and finally seeing him throw his stupid pride away and just embrace the things that were always right in front of him is so beautiful. It's such a positive and healthy message that isn't naive or tone deaf or judgemental in any way.
Honestly, the second it clicked for me that the closing credits was the 4.5 tatami room was when I realised this was my favourite television series of all time.
On the DVD of the movie is an interview of the author of The Ice Storm talking about Ang Lee's expansion of the characters. For example, the father portrayed by Kevin Kline in the novel is his teenage son's critical view of his father. I love Tatami Galaxy and the range of all Masaaki Yuasa's work, from Kaiba to Ping Pong, Lu Over the Wall, and Devilman Crybaby.
I've watched only 3 episodes of Tatami Galaxy years ago and I just finished it! Never seen such good anime since Odd Taxi, but this one was more realistic so it was quite touching. I feel complete with the Episode 9.
im not yet in college (although taking college classes) but after watching this, Watashi thought of college the exact way I used to think it'd be like and sometimes still think it will be like. that "rose-colored" life that i would imagine it to be

I overcame a lot of stigma I had about anime as a whole in order to watch it, but that was just one of the many lessons I learned from this show. The best thing about Tatami Galaxy to me, is not just the art or the music, or the stellar writing, it's how complete the experience is. Every part of this show works to support the larger whole, and this is probably why the ending hits as hard as it does. There are no questions to answer by the final episodes, no new sides of people to discover. Only hard truths.
I really liked this video and your style! I'm following you and supporting your future as a filmmaker. I currently am a Watashi gal as well. I am about to graduate from college and I don't have a close friend to my name, I just have acquaintances and people I got to work with a lot. They mostly ignore me and no one really considers me their friend, this is because I haven't taken any initiative to actually form bonds that are meaningful and lasting. The only thing I did really well is finding a girlfriend and I'm so very thankful, she's made all these years bearable and the lack of friendships is at least somewhat alleviated. Still, she encourages me every day to break out of my shell a tiny bit more. I'm about to do my internships and I'm planning on taking every opportunity to its conclusion, that's how I'll know I'm living a fulfilling life. Thank you, your video made me cry and think about myself again.
As a high-school student, I can relate to Watashi in some ways. For example, my crush is similarly not too far away socially, but I have overwhelming trepidation when it comes to romance, because every one of my previous crushes ended badly.

Your video cuts early in the video are very fast. If this was intentional because of the show’s nature, I’d say there’s a mismatch between the cut speed and the even pace of your audio. Also with the audio, the s sounds hiss a lot. Not sure if it’s a mic or your speech thing, but consider using a de-esser in your video editor or possibly a custom audacity filter. Your perspective is very interesting though, watching NiSWoG -> reading source material -> watching Tatami Galaxy. Maybe consider comparing and contrasting the anime to the source material. As one who’s consumed several Tatami Galaxy video essays, that’s probably what would have me coming back to this video for.

final two episodes are great the rest not so, it's too repetitive, just imagine this anime with a common animation style then you get a glimpse just how boring the show is ping pong is definitely the better yuasa work

I’ve read the book almost 10 times in the year since I’ve gotten it, and it’s by far my favorite novel.
Still the greatest piece of media I've ever seen. This and cowboy bebop truly changed my life after seeing them.
