id love to see more of you fishing its really cool seeing how happy you are about everything good or bad.. i als think you are the best bait maker on youtube.. no one else does it all theres great jig tiers and plastic makers but no one does it all at least on this platform.. thank you for sharing with us
G'day from Australia mate...What a terrific subject this is you have touched upon Adam...Now if you were in my country 99.5% of the Aussie fishing community would walk past all jigs that isn't loaded with a soft plastic lure...Hair jigs such as bucktail and marabou are a lost equation in my great land down under...Personally being the stubborn personality that I am i prefer hair jigs either in formats of Bucktail, Rabbit Zonkers and Marabou or hybrid versions of hair jigs whereby i have formulated a jig using nothing but tying materials over the old jig head armed with a plastic...That's why making hair jigs down here is only for the small band of true believers to which I find myself a part of....By the way Chartreuse absolutely catch many species of fish in Australian waters...Thanks again Adam on another thought provoking presentation...regards B.J. B.J.sCustom Baits Australia.
That was a good video. You worked hard on that one. Bucktail or plastic are both winners. that was cool how you took them to the water to test. Keep up the great work.
BEAUTIFUL AREA !! Reminds me of the River / camp ground areas we would camp at for 2 weeks every summer up in the Sierra Mountains at Brightman Flat . Clarks Fork & Kennedy Meadows 😍😎 Oh Ya... Luv' The Jigs too 👊
Love the build to catch videos Adam! Love the scenery too! Oh and I forgot to mention the jigs looks pretty good too! Will have to tie and pour some of them for myself. Thanks for sharing!
Really enjoy your format. There are a ton of reasons for how a jig will be assembled/built. I have one short coming of “tying jigs”compared to plastic jigs and trailers. Aside from tying a jig as an under spin or “tail gunner” spin....I’d like to know if you have any ideas on how to add “thump” to a tied jig without using plastic, leather or similar substance. Any ideas on how to make a tied jig thump?
Hey Al, thanks for the feedback and the question! Aside from adding a blade, I know there are synthetic tails that are added to large builds (big musky baits) so it those were available in a smaller version, that would be a way to add some "artificial" thump to a hair jig without making it a hybrid with a soft plastic trailer (which is a great option - retain the hair, but add the curly tail to capture aspects of both). You could also tie in a sizable chenille ball just before the hook bend, then tie on rabbit zonkers to each side. The ball will force a wide flare and the zonkers will "flap" more on the retrieve - not exactly a "thump" but it would move a lot of water - at least a decent "swish" LOL! Hope this helps!!
Gday Al...Mate i like your question and since i often tie in a zonker strip of bunny in a contrasting colour in place of a plastic teaser... I have a idea that may work by tying in a zonker of your choosing length colour etc now at the tail end snip off the end of another zonker tail and glue it to the underside of the zonker thats to be tied in place...Now the way i figure it the tail should still swim in a undulating fashion but with a solid tail end causing the regular cut zonker to produce some type of thump in the water...regards B.J.
Great video!!!! I think each one has their time and place. Any given day one could be better than the other and your video demonstrated that really well!!! Great Job Adam!!!
Great comparison. Normally I will utilize plastic if the fish are really feeding and tracking the bait really fast. Hair jigs I like for colder water temps and especially if the fish which in my case is crappie and smallmouth are really finicky....Basically finnesing them to bite. Adam I am sure you have poured/injected these three color combinations but if you haven't I haughty recomend.....cinnamon, gold/chartreuse and cream pearl. Not only does it work with pan fish but bass eat it up. Lizards and trailers.
I believe I’ve seen those grubs before! 😉 As most will prolly say, my general rule is hair in the colder water and SP in warmer but sooo many variables… Nothin wrong with both at the same time either… hang that grub out the back of the hair! Great video man… love the river footage!! I used to fish n camp on the Buckhannon often 30-35 yrs ago… (Dang, really?!? 😵💫🤦🏼♂️😑) Beautiful places on that river!!
Yup, little chartreuse and silver... who knew it would take such a foothold!? Love it. I miss river wading! At the start of the summer I really wanted to make it a bigger focus, but you know how that goes... life, kids, time... all the same, it was awesome to get out there!
Those both turn out fantastic. As far witch is better. I believe it comes down to what the is want. Grub has more vibration buck tail less more Suttle. Both work well I have gone back to using buck tails more and have been doing well. Good video I'm sure it took a lot of time to do out at the river. Thanks for the effort. God bless.
Thanks Gustavo! I tie on a Renzetti Traveler Saltwater edition (has larger jaws for jig hooks etc). Here’s a link if you’re curious. www.amazon.com/dp/B01M0R76GS/ref=cm_sw_r_as_gl_api_gl_i_QPK4GMXS8XKEZGMA9BDH?psc=1&linkCode=ml2&tag=sdgcustomlure-20
I’m all for what ever the Fish want. I’d send them a beer if I thought it would help. There is something about Chartreuse that small mouth just can’t resist.
Hey Mike, that’s called “Drop Out”. It’s made for lead molds (pouring bullets etc) and improves the flow of the lead (helps to get full pours) and helps them come out of the mold easier. I use it on all my lead molds!
I really like the texture and “crinkle look” of kip tail vs buck tail. Also a little less stiff it seems. What’s your thoughts on kip tail vs buck tail?
Kip tail definitely has a cool look, especially with the crinkle that you mentioned. I think it shines on small builds, 1/32oz… maybe 1/16, size 6-4 hooks, that sort-of deal. I do like the length bucktail offers and BT can be a bit more versatile as there’s different types of hair in 1 tail (more flare at the base/hollow fibers moving up to solid, less flare fibers at the tip). So each has its place and KT would probably be a better material for the little builds (if nothing else, less waste!) but, personally, I’ll give BT the nod for 1/8+!
Hey Jeffrey, thanks for the question! That is “Drop Out” spray. It helps the lead flow through the mold and release from the mold after it’s cooled. Here’s a link: www.amazon.com/dp/B00EVNSFKY/ref=cm_sw_r_as_gl_api_gl_i_04WZKAZAT9243VZKQ5SP?linkCode=ml2&tag=sdgcustomlure-20

Tie in a wire keeper for the grub and use the bucktail as a skirt. Been having a lot of luck doing that.

What is the mold called that you used in this video
Hey Harold, there's a link to it in the video description. Its called a Walleye Jig made by Do-It. Nice little head, I've enjoyed fishing it!
I have a trick to change the walleye jig into a killer hair jig for any species. Especially in rivers.
I’m happy to tell you how to change it. Let me know if you want to know.
Thx man! My favorite way to use it is with SPs but I’m always game to hear about new techniques!
@@SDGCustomLurecraft I modify the jig mold. To make the weight it lopsided/ the hook sits off center of the weight. Then tie it up using marabou.
