YES. Vinny played Ys. It's one of my favorite game series. I love it so much, I even wrote a whole album with Ys inspired music as a tribute. Just love the blend between orchestral textures and rock & metal guitar sounds. Started out with Ys VI and fell in love with the series. That game probably has one of the best boss themes ever written. In fact, I think Ys VI or Memories of Celceta would make a nice stream for vinny, since they're short games and have the fun combat from the later games.
Ernst is still one of the best boss songs out there. (I'm more fond of the _Ys versus Trails in the Sky_ rendition, I play that doing the Final Boss fight in _Metroid Dread,_ it'll make sense in context). Out of the series: - Origin I would argue is the best of the Ark Engine installments, though it's roughly eight hours a route on three routes. - 1 and 2 still have their charms (I recommend either the TG-16 version or Chronicles outright). - Wanderers from Ys, I recommend the TG-16 version. Oath in Felghana's pretty good though (arguably, the PSP version is a bit easier to handle than the Steam/GOG version for some mechanical reasons, not sure which direction the Memoire release will go). - Dawn of Ys/Mask of the Sun - I'd lean more towards Dawn, there's a full fan-made text and voice translation. - Kefin - oof, that one needs an update. (Falcom's CEO once said in an interview that he wants to at least get a remake of that out of the way before he retires.) - Ark - a bit rough with console controls, but otherwise a good installment. - Seven and Memories of Celceta - Party installments, a decent 20 hour experience. - Lacrimosa of Dana - one of the best 50 hour experiences I had, half the songs were bangers outright. - Monstrum NOX - eh... not too fond of this one, didn't help that it tried too hard to not be Dana and paid the price dearly for it.

If he ever wanted to try one of these games, I mean. I was fine with the length of Ys VIII but it really felt too long in Ys IX. Let's hope Ys X will be better. Music was great in both, though. Ys IX had a really awesome theme for outside the city and some great boss themes. Personally though, Ys VI has a special place in my heart and that's what mainly inspired me to write my tribute album. That, and Memories of Celceta. However, the Lacrimosa of Dana main theme is really awesome, especially considering how the sound team implemented the main motifs in the rest of the soundtrack.
Did you start with Ys 6 on the PS2 too? I still prefer that version even without the enhanced teleport option because of it's voice acting for all NPCs and cutscenes and like Adol changing his equipment based on what you wear. Sure some blood is gone and the extra dungeon isnt canon but who cares about that when you trade somewhat cheesy but still charming voice acting for such? I also heavily prefer the PS2 intro, even if the CG aged worse then the PC version of it BUT AT LEAST PEOPLE UNDERSTAND THAT INTRO in compare to whatever tryhard cool but barely telling PC intro of it.

Man i got so excited when I saw Lilia in the thumbnail. The older versions of Ys 1 and 2 are a little jank, but man do I adore this series. Im shocked dark fact went down that easily too. In the chronicles port, even with cleria armor, he was totally brutal.

I kinda wonder why nobody told him that Ys 1 is like around 6 hours long for a first timer, and that all Ys games before the series imo lost itself with Ys 7 and newer were less then 10 hours long and somewhat impressive for what they were!
I've only seen the original PC VGA version, back when Pushinguproses did LPs with Paw Dugan. My memories are pretty fuzzy, but I get the impression they're effectively two different games with the same name.
The best part about Ys I&II is that the flight from one to two up to Ys is (seemingly) fueled by all the money you gain in the tower -- you have zero gold when you land on Ys itself. For real though, I do hope Vinny looks more in to the Ys music. All of it is so good and genuinely shaped my taste of music as a kid.
And it shaped videogame music in general. Most games had short 8 bit music loops back then. Ys raised the bar to the fuxking sky, almost forcing japanese devs and composers to start taking video game music seriously. The TurboGrafx may have flopped, but I like to think its legacy lives in all those incredible bangers of the Super Nintendo era
What the heck even is that game. Thrash metal open with motorcycles as an "instrument" followed by 50's style rock BGM for the actual levels? I'm not complaining, there's definitely a (very good) vibe going on there.
FR, the songs that play during that part of the video are surprisingly catchy. Particularly the one that starts at 38:35. Makes me wish Vinny played it for longer so we got to hear more bangers.
You know Vin... Ys 1 & 2 are actually pretty short games (cant say the same for any the rest), but 1 & 2 go together and are a pretty nice story on their own 😘
@@genericguy54 the usual estimate for those games are around 6-8 hours for Ys I, 10+ hours for Ys II. Varies depending on which port you play because the eternal/chronicles version has some extra content. The early 3D games are at least 10 hours too, and ys 7 onwards are like 40-60 hours
TG-16 had some banger games for sure. I recently played all classic Castlevanias in chronological order, and the jump in production quality is crazy when you go from Super Castlevania to Rondo of Blood. It genuinely feels like a PS1 game but two years earlier.
Vinny has to play like a single Ys game once, they seem right up his alley. The Oath in Felghana when the remaster English translation releases could be perfect. Ys 3 Especially given that he likes Zelda II of all things in the Zelda library.
The problem is that playing Oath in Felghana will ruin all other action RPGs for you forever by virtue of being incredibly good, having instant boss fight retry, and having no filler Except for that one boss fight on Hard or above which shall not be named

"It came from the dessert" is an amazing game, and the FMV version is almost abusive in the way it explots the base material. The musical stings are awesome, and fits the original game tho.
Ys series started on Japanese Computers, but it wasn't until TurboGraphix16 CD that Western Gamers finally got exposure to this Action JRPG franchise in the best way possible.

ICFTD was fucking great, I had that on the Amiga (it's an ENTRIELY different game here, though, the Turbografx version is nothing like the other versions). I also love Ys, although I never played the Turbografix version.

Vinny doesnt hate anime, he just doesnt love it. He likes JRPGs, so theres not no chance of a Snatcher stream someday. If we get a big enough Kojima drought, the odds will go up significantly.
The anime vinny doesn't like is moe high school stuff. Snatcher isn't that.
Keep in mind we just came through an era where mainstream Top 10 anime was 12yo incest but it's okay because "not blood related". And that was the Top 10 stuff. We're now in an era where the anime is literally about girls playing red rocket with a dog. If you're confused why people don't want to play anime. Maybe take a look at what's popular in the fandom.
And no 12yo is not legal in Japan. They have a graduated system where it's not considered a crime if two kids get caught doing things together, but a 30yo Discord mod trying to talk up an underage is still jail. That's the excuse manga authors use to sell incest manga. "Both characters are underage so an old guy joinking to it is somehow not a crime".

"It came from the dessert" is an amazing game, and the FMV version is almost abusive in the way it explots the base material. The musical stings are awesome, and fits the original game tho.
