Just one more question: what is your take on BW audio system vs Harmon Kardon audio system in iX ? Thanks a lot for your videos, all interactions with BMW folks that you bring to us. I follow your blog pretty closely.

The BW system is amazing! There is no comparison. Might be the best sound system BMW offers today. Glad I can help, I try to create content that's useful, rather than just pure entertainment to attract clicks :) And thanks for reading the website also.

I am so interested in how this car performs in Chicago's cold weather. Very curious to know what is the drop in range ? Also, what happens if you blow heat and not just rely on radiant heating (which is a good fall back in case you want to prolong the battery)

I am too. Waiting for the temp to drop a bit. It's still in the high 40s low 50s. I'm waiting for around 30-35F weather or colder. Then I will do a full test. Next test is 100 to 0%.

Funny: US electricity charges are half that of the UK's HPC networks, just like fossil fuels.
One thing I do wish BMW's car/app offered was more detail on why charging failed, at least as far as it knows. It'd be good to distinguish "car and charger couldn't set up a network connection" from "car and charger spoke to each other but charger couldn't start and instead said 'not enough power coming from grid supply'. That of course needs the chargers to be more informative too -but if you've wasted 15 minutes trying different chargers it's good to know when to give up. When Tesla do open up, they should offer variable pricing: power will cost less at times of low demand. This will be good if you can't charge at home and just need to recharge at a public station every few days. On a long journey we more go by "when is it a good time to take a break" -though even there some motorway service stations have multiple vendors and the Tesla ones cost 2/3 of the adjacent GridServe units.

Thanks for the video. I leased an iX-50 a month ago and I have used the free 30 minute EA facility four times so far. My very first attempt was unsuccessful so I went to the dealership and my customer rep was good enough to come with me and we went through the process. Turned out the sunshine on the EA charger meant I could not see the "Continue" button! Subsequent use has been problem free. I only got the iX after leasing an X1 and as a result exploring the BMWUSA website where, it seemed to me, the iX lease deal was an absolute bargain. To say I am mightily impressed with this car would be an understatement.

Excellent result, and of course when you charge at home, the battery fills up while you sleep.

Very true! Unfortunately no charging at home for me. Yet

I am a BMW fanatic and this painful video only furthered my conviction that I will NEVER own an EV.

      Why is it painful?

I was like you. Time and cost a small price to pay if you’re road tripping in an EV. Everyday use, you’ll never wanna own a gas car for a daily. Of course, family road trips, we use an X7 M50 so we don’t need to have range anxiety.

For those of us with a Level 2 charger at home, this is an excellent, very functional vehicle. For those road tripping, by planning ahead and with the U.S’s charging stations’ quality and number increasing every year, adventuring out in 2024 will be easier than 2023, and by 2025, will work well.

You should try the tesla supercharger, it will be half time

    • @bmwblog

Why would it be half the time?

Almost $40 for charging. Somehow, I thought charging would have been less expensive than the gas. Apparently not.

This is fast charging. You can charge way cheaper by using a Level 2 station

I charge my iX1 at an off peak Uk rate of 7.5p/kWh; at the summer rate of 3.5 miles/kWh then that’s about 2p/mile, in US numbers: 2.5c/mile. On longer distances the rate varies with vendor, BMW also give customers half price charging at the wonderful Ionity network across Europe. Once that expires I won’t pick it over competitors, but when I next do a driving vacation across Europe I’ll get a month’s discount pass from them *and Tesla* for lowest cost fast charge. Other than Ionity, UK DC charging rates do mean long journeys cost more than my 320d predecessor -but that’s less than half my mileage. I’m happy

Those days are long gone; Telsa still claims gas savings, but charging only saves money when charging at home, which for most people is 98% percent of the time. Supercharging cost have skyrocketed
