I got to meet Sun Ra at this show, and anyone walking around during Miles Davis' set could have done the same. Miles was playing Cyndi Lauper and Michael Jackson covers and I walked up on the hill to the left of the stage. I saw a table with autographed Sun Ra 8"x10"s on it and Sun Ra was sitting next to a tent behind it. I asked if they were for sale and he indicated that they were free. I asked if he would write something on it for me and he asked me what I wanted him to write. I said "To Ted and then just anything". So he wrote 'To Ted' on it in ball point pen above the autograph in sharpie! I didn't push my luck by asking for any more. He was very nice and easily approachable, unlike Rufus Thomas who I met at Blind Willie's. Did anyone else have the same experience? I still have the photo so I know I'm not imagining it!
Very cool! Seeing this show was a bit of a quest for me since discovering his records in cut out bins and being blown away as a teen. I saw him a second time at Rumors, I think it was, or maybe that time was first. Anyway, Sun Ra was a true genius, a true original and an exemplary human being. Three Disney tunes - what a trip! Wish I hadn't missed Pink Elephants on the tape. It was wild! BTW, just found this. This guy is a long time big deal video editor from Atlanta. @@oydave I taped his show at the Moonshadow Saloon in 1984. I think some of it came out on a bootleg record, but I'll upload the whole tape to my channel at some point. Steve from the Variety Playhouse booked the show and he told me it was Sun Ra's first Atlanta show, or maybe the first with the Arkestra. He made cool t-shirts for it and I still have mine!
