  • If you have been struggling to decide what type of kayak to buy here's an idea. Don't buy one at all. Consider a Packboat. A Packboat takes the best attributes from a kayak and canoe and blends them together.

Hachi Roku yes that’s true. Although I routinely carry my boat 2-4 kms over rocky uneven trails. That’s the biggest reason weight is so important for me. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.

The Swift Pack 13.6 or the Swift Prospector 14 is probably my dream boat!
I'm on my 14th year of owning my Old Town Pack canoe. 33 pounds and I can't imagine ever not having it. Its sorta the same idea...may have come 1st... but I do love the light weight, reduced wind exposure, I added a sit backer seat I also use in camp... this idea is the best of all worlds to me. I can use either a traditional or double bladed paddle.
I can't stop salivating over the Swift line... they are just so beautiful!

The weight thing is why I went with a pack raft... plus it's easier to store. My lower back gets a bit sore after a couple of hours, but a few minutes standing fixes that. I can only maintain about 4km/h for any length of time since it's short (about 3m), but I'm quick on the portage since it weighs only 6 lbs.

Beautiful boats. A friend of mine has an old town pack boat which was the first one I've seen and then Joe, Kyle, Doug and now you have the swifts. I'll definitely own one in the future. I've used a 15 foot canoe for years but as you know it's not easy when you're by yourself. I have to pack a milk crate full of rocks up front just to keep the thing steady. Portaging with something so small and lightweight must be a pleasure. Thanks for the review and I'll see you on the next one!

Love the video and that looks like a great boat! Just let people know that it is the best boat for you and they type of paddling you do and not the best boat, period. I’ve had too many canoes and kayaks to count at this point, and most do some things exceptionally well, and others not so much. If I was going to Algonquin, I don’t think it could be beat. But if I was smallmouth fishing a rocky river in West Virginia, it would not last long across all those shoals and rocks. Nor would it handle the westerly winds (and chop) paddling between the Apostle Islands. I have a lot of people ask me about boats all the time and my first question is always, “What type of paddling are you doing?” Keep up the good trips my friend. You inspire me to get out my paddle every time I watch.

As a kid I had a Single Canvas on Wood frame Canoe and a Double Canvas on Wood Frame Canoe with a Mast and Sail. It had a length of wood that went across just behind the front person with fold down Dagger Boards at both ends for stability. And a fold down rudder. Many years later I did a residential course which offered the use of a near by Canoe club. Being a big man I was put into the open Canadian Canoe which I gave up on after 20 minutes. I was then lent the Club Owners single Canoe as he was big like me. 2 hours later I came back. I like the idea of the open because I have a bad hip and that makes it awkward for me to get In/Out of Conoes. So this might be a good solution

I just got mine and tested a little from Hornbeck Boats in NY. First time on the water it was windy with choppy waters, as I got into it, the boat started to take on water and current pushed me to the center of the lake, I had a really hard time coming back to shore using Werner Ovation 240 cm paddle and I thought I was going to capsize several times; I was scared to lose the boat and paddle which I did not had secured to it (no more that mistake) I was wearing NSR Chinok fishing vest so I was not so worry about me but I yelled for help twice to people on shore not that far and they never heard me, so I added a whistle to the vest now. The pack boat I chose is the Classic 12 @ 18 pounds; 20 with its yoke, which was thrown in without charge as I did not ordered but they included it anyways (yoke is made of wood and metal but weights about 1.25 pound and cost $50.00, way less than 1.5 pounds and $400.00 crazy expensive for the carbon ones swift makes!) one sits low int he boat, it has hollow cheeks which Hornbeck claims it cuts through waves nicely and add stability but the distance from gunnels to water is about 7 inches only, so in choppy water and wind I have no clue how they claim its stability. In any case, second try in the water I did better with wind, current and waves kind of trying to cut into it instead of letting get hit from the sides, second time I could paddle around better as getting into the lake it was calm and flat, only when going to the middle the weather picked up some. Hornbeck claims that with a boat that has taller distance from gunnels to water, body offers more resistance and acts like a sail, making it really hard to control the boat. I have to try mine yet loaded with 40 or 50 pound gear, besides my own weight at 220, Boat capacity is rated at 320, then see how well it floats and how well I can handle it. I had an awful experience with the delivery company (XPO) which I am fighting with a claim for shipping refund as the shipment was screwed up and did not arrived on the set date. I had to cancel plans I had and lost money, not to mention an argument with some family and putting my life in danger as I had to drive for almost 12 hours back and forth to bring the boat home; I should have refused delivery altogether and after all going through I am having second thoughts about keeping it, I was looking to the swifts ones before I ordered this one but they are more expensive and they are also heavier, I do not even know if swift ships to US or how much it is the cost. Hornbeck charged me $395.00 shipment from NY to Las Vegas, NV. although like I said the boat never made it to Las Vegas as I had to pick it up from XPO Hub in Fontana, California and bring it home in a crazy road trip that I do not think I would ever do again. Both companies are claiming they do not know what happened, that they did what they supposed to do. If anyone is thinking in ordering from Hornbeck, keep this story in mind and beware of the times they promise you for delivery. I am not happy with the experience so far and not so happy with the boat itself completely convinced yet at this point. It seem an excellent choice for calm still waters or a pond but for open lake with wind and choppy waters, not so much so far.

Having had a couple of kayaks and one canoe, I prefer the stability of a kayak. Sure, the canoe will keep you drier, but there's less chance of tipping a kayak. The canoe I had was so heavy I finally donated it to charity after only several outings with it. As you get older like I am, I come to enjoy the comfort and convenience of my cuddy cabin boat.

This is a very cool little boat. I get it. But Swift wants $3,400 for the boat, and you can add hundreds more for the yoke. I'm about the same age as these guys and I can't sit in a kayak for more than 40 minutes at a time. I think the best bet is an inflatable stand up. It's quick to learn, and the versatility is incredible. I bought a 14 foot Starboard touring board (top drawer) for $1700. The thing inflates in 6 minutes. weighs about 3 pounds more than the pack boat and It's nearly indestructible. I can portage it with a shoulder strap. And the real strength is that you can sit when you want to sit, kneel or stand, and get on and off the board in the middle of a lake if you want to take a swim. I've done 4 night trips into Algonquin and for solo trips I think it's the way to go. And yes, you can learn how to paddle a SUP when you're 50.

A very big investment no doubt, but if your serious enough about it and can afford it, it's one of the best investments you can make. I agree it is the most sensible type of boat for most conditions. That one is a dandy. I live on Lake Erie and about twelve years ago built a Geodesic Airolite Arrow 14 from kit. About a 25 pound boat. Since then I have done a few repairs and modifications on the wooden frame and changed the skin a couple times. If a person has the confidence and moderate skill level the boat can be made for $150. and some of one's spare time. I have been out in rough conditions and returned with a quart or two of water in the hull. I like the idea of canvas decks but have never had any reason to get around to making them.

Fantastic video! I'm considering the Keewaydin 14 or 15 pack boat myself. I can't wait to see what kind of deck covers you come up with. (I wonder if it's possible to drill small holes in the sides, reinforced by titanium grommets. Then you can lace them on.) Also, regarding the fragile carbon paddle on the shoreline. No way. I've been using Werner all carbon kayak paddles for decades, and they are bombproof. You can smash the absolute crap out of them on the rocks, and nothing will happen.

With the pack boat I can see fishing out of it harder then a solo canoe, do you or have you fished out of either boat?. Also if the pack boat seat gets wet (rainy day) I would think it must take quite awhile to dry out?

As a Frontier 12 fan, this is very interesting to me, even though it seems to be more canoe than kayak. The 24 lbs. thing is the real hook, isn't it? It's a super nice boat - but from working one up on their website, it looks like it would cost nearly 4K (u.s.) and that wouldn't include the shipping. Holy cow that's alot of money for a pretty much featureless boat. ( compared to a fishing kayak type boat, that is). I do love it though. Maybe I'll hit the lottery. :)

How to cover your packboat for accidental rough waters: use something like "Stretch Plastic Wrap Cling Film" ;) few layers of it, it will hold; of course hitting rocks may scratch it. Just an idea; I'd never do it, but for "brainstorming" the crazier the idea is the better: you can even paint it with something durable and transparent.

Lucky guy. Great boat for sure. Plan on getting one myself, but the kevlar model. The Carbon fusion model is a little too pricey for me. The kevlar model (Pac 13.6) only weighs a couple of pounds more and is a little less expensive and has all the same features and is more durable. The money I save will pay for the paddle, which are expensive as well.

You must be a very serious canoe trip kind of person to spend that kind a investment on your boat. Don’t get me wrong I just love the look of your pack boat. It’s the cost that I can’t justify. I’ll just stick with my 14 foot fibre glass canoe and put up with the 45 lbs. loading and carrying it sometimes can get a little difficult but I just suck it up. And if’s windy I do use a kayak paddle. Because my shoulders are shot and painful sometimes. Cheers 🇨🇦👍

I had four kayaks, and all had great back supports. I just don't like how unstable they are, and they can't hold the supplies like your packboat. Also, they weighed about 75 pounds, and for a woman, an old woman, that was doable, but not comfortable. I can haul 25 pounds around like nothing. Also, being a woman, I didn't want to have to depend on another's strength for my outings, but this boat allows a woman to be independent.

Great vid! As a kayaker myself, there is one very important question...Where will I paddle? If it is on lakes, calm water and light wind this one looks very practical and safe. But on open ocean, just forget it. There is really no substitute for a sealed ocean kayak for safety and pack volume. Kinda want that light open boat for lake paddling now, my wallet is crying LOL. Thanks for a great and intresting video, thumbs up from Sweden!

Great video, thanks. I hate kayak's, always been a Canoe guy. The small lightweight kayak's are too confining and no room for gear, the big sit on top kayak's are heavy as hell. I've seen you and Joe Robinet use the Swift pack boats. They look awesome, the best of both worlds, room to store enough gear and very lightweight compared to a Canoe. One thing I'd like to know is how expensive are they?. I'm almost too afraid to ask, also, does Swift ship to the U.S.? I'm getting a nose bleed thinking how much that would cost. I've never seen or heard of these until I started watching Joe's videos.

Have you much soloing experience in traditional canoes? I'm looking for something I can solo in...do photography/drone work and head out for 2 or 3 day back country trips with some portaging. I'm an intermediate paddler. I have a Swift Keewaydin 16' and a couple of kayaks good for day tripping. I was thinking of a small prospector type canoe until I saw this video. I'm wondering if this is what I am after? (BTW, I've never powered a canoe like a kayak. Is it as efficient? I want to go light as my joints have got 60+ years of wear and tear.)

    • @DrenalinAdventures
      @DrenalinAdventures  2 роки тому

My suggestion to you is the Swift 14 foot Prospector packboat. You can also get it with adjustable canoe seat. I’ve done a lot of canoeing. Kayak paddle is the way to go👍

As always great video production. Great shots. From someone that has a swift prospector, solo canoe and a seakayak, I had a hard time with your comparisons. Comparing a pack boat to a kayak is apples and oranges...a bit misleading. Don't get me wrong awesome boats... my dad just bought a pack from Swift this week. Very cool but not a vessel that's meant for say Georgian Bay or Lake Superior tripping (actually any Great Lake). Inland lakes no problem. The advantage of a seakayak is that when/if you tip in rough water one can either roll or reenter the seakayak where they are. You'd be swimming to shore in a canoe or packboat and hopefully it's not this time of year with cold water shock a possibility. None of my most extreme trips would be possible in this type of open decked boat. Not busting your chops, awesome boat, just not quite on about comparisons.

A great alternative to this is Slipstream canoes out of the Adirondacks, New York. The can build you a completely custom boat and I know they ship throughout the U.S.. They built me a custom hybrid for under $2000 and under 30lbs.

Very valid points, but i'm in a cheap sit on top Walmart fishing kayak that runs 10% this price of one of these. The weight is crazy on these plastic kayaks and i've ordered a $40 kayak dolly to help with packing the thing around. I got swamped in a rapid in a river against a downed tree once in a canoe so that is a huge concern of mine for the type of places I visit. The weight of these canoes is super appealing though.

The owner of Swift worked at PlacidBoatworks from Lake Placid , Ny , stole the concept from PlacidBoatworks went to Canada and set up shop. I bought a 15 foot Kevlar/ Carbon fiber “Rapidfire” 22 lbs, and a 12 foot “Spitfire” for my girl. 18 lbs Both boats are one of the best investments we have ever made. Not cheap, $3400.00 & $3200.00 respectfully. They track awesome, handle big water , and have a huge payload. These boats are extremely well made. If you enjoy canoe camping, this is the craft that makes sense. Easy to get in and out, easy to load, just a joy ! Sometimes you really do get what you pay for. Peace ✌️

The pack boat was just released a few years back. Swift has been manufacturing since the 80s . If you went to the factory where I used to work , it's the truly gifted and talented workers thay out these beauty boats together . Anyone can have an idea but putting together the prices is the sweetness to the sauce. Does this company in the states make carbon Kevlar canoes with infused gunwales and all carbon enfused handles thwarts yolks and hardware, all infused . Go for a walk through the swift canoe factory and tell me how much influence you see from Americanism

Love the light weight and love canoeing!
As a Sea Kayaker myself I think you found something that works for you but safety wise there is no comparison to a similar size Sea Kayak.
Take the Dagger Alchemy L or Startos for bigger guys.
For around $1,200 you are getting basically an indestructible vessel that will take you farther and be safer than any open boat ever will!
Again, I love that ultralight creation of yours
    Cheers
    BB 🍻

Thanks for taking the time to comment. Every advantage comes with a sacrifice in another area. For me personally, the weight savings is the most important but you are correct about the sea kayak info. Ultimately, you have to choose what is going to work for you. Safe travels.

If I did not already have my 17 lb. Micro Poke Boat (which I carry in to lakes on a pack frame) I might (and may yet) get one of these. It does look easier to get out of. I am a 69 yr old grandma and climbing up from kayaks is getting steep.
