I commend you for your transparency. I did 1 shoot last year for the first time and it was so bad, I never delivered it🤦🏾♂️ But at the same time it taught me so much. I just passed my part 107 this month and picked up the Mavic 3. My goal is to first build up my portfolio then focus on paid gigs.
Good tips. I ran into the same thing after talking to several local real estate agents in my area... nobody wanted “just a drone pilot” - they wanted a complete package offered with photo, video, and drone together.
Pick a look and stay with it. Not only do you make a "brand" but there is also the added benefit of a consistent workflow, which means, you can scale up rapidly. I just saw this. It is very great advice. You're a kind, considerate and generous young man!
I do farm and rural aerial imagery plus videos and for me the best time is noon or when the sun is high as the goal is to accent the property and shadows just mask the details. Also auto exposure if you use the M2 zoom as a fixed exposure will not work while zooming in. I also try to focus on the idea of making the subject the focus not special effects or music as most realtors do not want a cinematic movie the just want a good representation of the property. Keep in mind this is not residential but rural farm land.
Thanks for your honesty and great information. I took an early retirement from GM and plan on doing real estate photography. Both ground and arial. I have been doing a lot of research on what I need and what I need to do. Your posts are always entertaining and informative. Thanks for sharing and have a great day.
Hey Ken, nicely done! You were straight forward and to the point, the good, the bad and the ugly. Thanks for this excellent real-life video for those what to look into becoming a Real Estate Camera/Commerical Drone Videographer. Thanks for speaking the truth and opening yourself for others to hopefully learn.
Outstanding Ken!!! No BS, just tell us how it is! I wish more people would do content like this. I myself am at a point where im considering going one way or the other. Glad you pointed out that if your going to aerial real estate your most likely going to need to do interior as well.
Ive seen all your newer stuff, but going back to see where you started and words of advice, your success is a testament to this video. What aperture do you use when photographing a living room or bedroom?
That is exactly where I am at. I got my part 107 in the beginning of March and I'm just too nervous to do it yet. Also, being 16 does not help because some people will not take you seriously.
Excellent video! I like the kind of person who can show his earlier mistakes, because we all are in the same position when we first start out. I can see you are a great teacher......
Lot of good advice! Being your own worst critic is tough, but then you push yourself harder to do good work. Now, since you asked for some critiquing, a couple other things you should watch out for... It's "realtor", not "realator", which often makes realtors crazy. It's like "jewelry"; SO many people say "jewlery". A minor thing but gives some people the wrong impression about you. Last but not least... "video-ography" (7:36) ? Videography is one word. ;) Thanks for the great insights!
I've been in the game for 15 years, it's a bit different in Australia, as the vendor is paying for the video, not the agent. My base price is $1500 ... my high end clients are the 4-6 K price range. My advice, don't go in cheap...practice your craft, and when you kick ass...charge for it. But you need to deliver every single time. I shoot RAW as my budget allows for dedicated time for color grading. Amateurs blow out windows, pros make sure not to blow out windows. My number 1 tip , if you want to separate yourself from other...KEEP YOUR VERTICAL LINES STRAIGHT!!! So many people overlook this simple thing, but makes a massive difference. And learn to shoot without a gimbal , it's easy to walk through a house with a gimbal. Keep it as a tool, but don't shoot the entire video on a gimbal. If anyone wants more detailed tips...hit me up.
I know this video is a year hold but it will hold lots of value for ever really. I am really thinking about doing aerial videos with the Autel Evo 2 and the mavic Air 2. I know I will need a nice camera gimbal like one of the ronins or something and eventually a camera and different lenses. Like you said, a phone gimbal could be used at first start-up until you get up to speed. Thanks for telling it straight, that no one is gonna pay you to fly your drone all day. I knew this was true but kinda thought it would be more than 15% aerial and 85% would be walking around inside homes and doing video inside mostly. This is good news to me though as I live up north in Pittsburgh Pa area. I was wondering what a winter would like trying to do this full time. Even if there is snow on the ground some properties would still look great im sure. Studying for my part 107 currently and I wanted to have a look at what to expect. This video really helped. Thanks Ken. As always, stay original. And I used to live down on Marco Island FL for 10 years and I lived in Ft. MCCOY Ocala FL. Also for about 4 years. Go Gators lol
Lol, I had the same experience. My first video had some good and some bad but they "Loved love loved it!". I have since made some changes and have increased the quality. Now I just need to get agents so I can get more consistent business in my area. I do drone, walkthrough, social media shorts, and photography.
Excellent. Love the honesty as we've all been there. You can think you're great with the craft, but when you're starting out you can be afraid to put your foot down because you just want the job. My first gig paid me great money, but my client was calling all the shots and micro-managing. I wasn't ablet o get everything the first day (it was a giant apartment building). My contingency plan was to tell them I needed to come back and finish (what I didn't get to finish because the client pulled me off of what I was doing to do an impromptu interview I hadn't planned on). They were all "yeah, yeah" and I'm thinking they were liking my commitment. Nope. I showed up to get the shots I wasn't able to get and they had a fit. That conversation we'd had completely out the window. So, yeah, do NOT let them call your shots. With experience it gets better but that's just it - experience.
Thanks for the tips. I felt like you were telling my story when you first started. Got my drone and license in October and nothing yet .... I will take your experience and lessons learned to heart. Thanks again.
Nice and honest video! Amazed by how interior design differences so much between US/EU in general. Also a thing I noticed when I visit the US myself near 4years ago.

Heya again, OB. Good tips. As to dumb stuff on a shoot: Because of the hurried pressure by the groom's father (and 4 different locations for the event) at a looooong wedding shoot one time, I forgot to press the RECORD button on one of my 3 camcorders ... caught it a few minutes later, but too late for an important part of the ceremony. And wouldn't ya know it, my cover camcorder's El Cheapo SD cards went tits up and the footage was totally corrupt. Anyhoo .... awaiting delivery of my Sony a6000 in a couple of days ... and my Parrot Anafi (my 1st drone ever) delivery in a few days after that. Been scouting eBay, etc. (will hit some pawn shops tomorrow) for a 12mm Rokinon 2.0 for the a6000. I do have an active real estate broker license but am tire of fighting that agent path. I do have some video shooting and editing (use Vegas Pro) experience. I say ALL of that to say this: I am going to jump into doing real estate videos as soon as I get up to speed on the Anafi & the a6000. So, I appreciate all of your tips on shooting R. E., and other, videos. Keep 'um comin', chief. . . .. Dude... You're awesome, thank you for those tips. The smudge I'll definitely be looking for all the time... What about panning with the drone instead of overhead shots for areas that aren't drone ready for overhead, what's your thoughts? Question: I have a Sony a6400, which wide angle lens would you suggest that I grab? I just made a mistake yesterday while practicing on a townhouse. I turned my camera on, saw that the shutter was at 24...at first I'm like that odd but I'm shooting 24fps so I'm good. Finished the townhouse then I switched some setting or something and then shutter flipped to 1/48 then I'm like crap.....had to do it all over again. 48 is what I wanted to film 24fps

For photos just a tripod. For videos you’ll need a gimbal
@@OriginaldoBo Right. But what I’m asking is can I just buy a drone alone and use pictures and videos from it. That way I do all in one device??
No, a drone doesn’t do we in houses and typically not wide enough. You’ll need a camera to do this properly
