@@anthonyboerio4955 Benjamin Orr from The Cars is from rocky river. He sang the bands biggest hits. Tracy chapman is from shaker. I don't think cleveland is cursed. Michael stanley band was not really suitable for the dawn of mtv
I live in Cleveland and my mom came home one day and said. "I just bumped into Michael Stanley at giant eagle" like it was nothing. I wish this band had more hits. I really love the way they sound
😢💔 Rock in Peace, Michael The Cleveland musician, who ruled the local airwaves in the late 1970s and early 1980s died Friday(March 5, 2021) after a seven-month battle with lung cancer, his family announced. He was 72. F*CK Cancer !!!
They use to come to Huntington, WV all the time in the 80s and open for bands at the civic center. Always enjoyed seeing them. One of the most underrated bands of all time.
AMEN! I watched and enjoyed them opening for lots of big names. TBQH, I liked them so much after they opened for a Ratt/Stryper double bill, we were able to meet them backstage after their set - and didn't go back to watch the others. Good old days of General Admission $15 to stand and head bang at the civic center.
Anyone remember Kid Leo on WMMS playing this and Springsteen Born to Run every Friday at 6 to kick the weekend off. Friends would record that and send it to me in Germany w/USAF. Best way to start the weekend.
Gosh thanks so much! I saw this on that first day, and immediately stood in front of the mirror with my guitar and sang "He can't love you like I love you..."!!!
I still remember where I was when I first heard it. In my mom's Pontiac Catalina as she was driving me, my sister & her friend to the PX at the army base. As it played, us 3 kids were saying "this is good? Who is it? Please let the DJ say who it is after the song!" The DJ did say (anyone remember the frustration back in those days when you wanted to know but they didn't say?) and when I got to the tiny record department at the PX, they actually had the 45! I took it home, played it constantly, flipped it over to play the b-side "Carolyn" and when it was as good as the a-side, I went to buy the entire album. Still 1 of my favorite 5 LPs of all-time...and I've bought 1000's
look at tom kimmel and his 1987 music less hardcore blue collar worker. with all the wasted stations on satellite radio it would be nice to have a heartland music station of late 70s to 1980s music.
RIP Michael Stanley. You were awesome, glad I got to see you in concert if only once, at the end of a Pirates at Indians game. Bought your album "You can't fight fashion" in '83, I still have it, it got wore out years ago. Condolences to the family. Love, from Pittsburgh 😿❤️
Hey there fellow Classic Rock - N - Roller fans .... This group was and still is one of the Best Bands along with The Pretender's , The Cars , Devo , and too many others to count to come from the Cleveland , Ohio area and that should have been given a better chance to make it Big across the USA , but were not managed correctly ! 😲 Even though this MSB song & video made it to the MTV Music Channel in the cable stations opening season , it's a Shame that MSB never made it big beyond that and the entire Cleveland area plus points East becuz they were just as good as the other bands that i mentioned before , but that's how it goes in life sometimes and i think Mr. Stanley knew that and he just had to accept it for what it was ! RIP and GOD Bless you Michael for you are surely missed by all of the State of Ohio and especially when it comes to the Cleveland area ! 🎸😯 😦 😢
good memories i can still recall standing on my aunts front porch and some guy down the street in his truck blasting this tune driving by and i heard it perfectly
Michael is the afternoon drive time (3-7pm) DJ on Clevland's Classic Rock(TM), WNCX, 98.5FM, and still spins some of his own stuff on the air. He also has another band that plays out in the Cleveland area. You can stream 'NCX off the net on iTunes, among other places.
So many great gems from 1980-81 that seems to get overlooked on the radio, I believe if this song was released a couple years later it would've made the Top 20, too bad in late 1980/early 1981 Top 40 radio was oversaturated with soft rock, ballads and post disco tunes.
Yeah it sounds ahead of its time really, more like 1983-85 than 1980. It would've fit in with the AOR arena rock of the mid 80s really well, one of my favorite melodic rock songs that hardly anybody knows about.
Saw him at Hiram in fall of '73....went to school there with his sister, she had a little pull with the band, so he did a gig there. didn't really get into MSB until '78
Sometimes I'll come across an obscure 80s song (like this one) and wonder why it's not more popular, but in a way it would ruin the surprise. It's cool to still be able to find "new" 80s music I've never heard before! :)
One of the treasures of my teen years....Great stuff!! They just don't make em like this anymore. Can't wait to see them at Jefferson Barracks Park, St. Louis MO at the Rock and Cholesteroll festival September 30, 2012..."Come On Let The Party Begin".
Yeah!! Now that's what I want in my hospital room... guitars, sax, dancing nurses and MSB!. A college friend of mine from Cleveland turned me on to MSB back in '79. Saw them play at the Veterans Memorial Auditorium that same year and was hooked. Love their 'live' album, 'Stage Pass'. Thanks for the post!
Used to play this song in a cover band starting in the eighties up until recently, without ever knowing the original artist. Now we know. Great song, great talent..
So good to see this video again. I haven't seen it in what seems like eons. Reminds me of happy times. I'm originally from New York State & I dated a girl from Cleveland the summer this came out. I used to go there to visit her & she'd show me around town. Naturally, she loved this band, being they were home town heroes. It was great- that was such a fun time, she was a great girl. As soon as the song popped into my head, I searched UA-cam and here it was. Thanks for posting! Cheers!
Saw them rock the 'Burgh on New Years Eve back in '83. A great night with a great band. If they were from NYC they would have been bigger than Springsteen.
Due to this songs popularity, and consequent considerable airplay, I wonder if Michael Stanley Gee ever got sick of hearing dude absolutely blow him away vocally......☺️😁😁
These guys were northern Ohio gods. Don't they still hold the record for fastest sell out of Blossom? Always thought they would break big nationally but it never materlized. Great vid thanks for posting it.
thank you for this video, i am from youngstown ohio , grew up one street away from gary markowski , my first concert in my life was michael stanley band at youngstown state university, saw them at blossom, coliseum and akron and youngstown agora's
The genre is coined "Regular Guy Rock". They typically toured as warm up, one-hit bands to Arena Rock staples. Michael Stanley Band, The Romantics, Steve Forbet, Tommy Tutone, et.al. all had their time in the sun for a year or so.
Catchy tune that I haven't heard in decades. It's funny- the verse sounds like "Power of love" by Huey Lewis and the chorus sounds like Rick Springfield's "I've done everything for you".
Drove from Toronto to Youngstown's Idora Park to see them in the very early 80's. They never seemed to catch on outside the North Eastern US, or South Ontario.
OMG Agora Ballroom! I haven t thought about that in forever. hehe saw them at Blossom music center summer of '82. All of my high school memories have MSB in them. : ) Best thing about Ohio.
Rest In Peace, Michael and thank you for all the great music and memories.

He was black. He also wasn't in the video, but played the sax in the studio version which you're hearing on this video.
Didn't I just say that?
