Clone shootout - Tweed 5E3 Deluxe vs 18w Plexi {which is better?}

  • Both amps are hand wired on turret boards... tubes are JJ. both amps have tube rectifiers and are as true as possible to the original component values, layout and architecture, but nothing is "new old stock" both amps were constructed from currently produced components. The Marshall clone has celestion gold alnico, where as in the deluxe a weber signature alnico was used, but both speakers seem very well suited for these amps...

      Yeah, I'm a Marshall guy but I have to admit that Tweed sounds stellar. It has a great chime and a perfect sounding speaker. However, even my DSL40 sounds better than this Marshall. For whatever reason, it sounds pretty lifeless here and the speaker doesn't breakup nicely(IMO). Cheers!

    Neither is better. They are both incredible amps. I own both and sometimes I feel like taking the tweed out and sometimes I feel like taking the Marshall 18 watt out. Both have Celestion G12H30’s in them. Tweed is warmer, Marshall cuts through the mix better. Depends on what tone you’re going for.

    I have both, both are great but totally different.Here's your school example of the difference between a british and an american sound.The 18w has a lot more clean headroom and a rather "chimey" sound (a bit like a vox)The 5e3 has the best dirty sound in the world(imo) and I use it most in "roots music" breaking point gain situations and works best with low output guitars.The 18w takes humbuckers better (cleaner and brighter).

      Really, like Bruce say, the marshall is a clone modified of the 5e3 Deluxe

    • @brucedunkle9136
      @brucedunkle9136 5 років тому +3

      The 5F6A Fender Bassman circuit was used as a template for the JTM45. When a 5e3 Deluxe is overdriven, it really takes on "that" sound of an early Marshall. The JTM45 used a GZ34 rectifier, so you get that "sag" that lends itself to that tweed sound. The later Plexi and Super Lead amps did away with the tube rectifier.

  • @richardjohnson2331
    @richardjohnson2331 5 років тому +3

    I think both amps sound good, but you're not getting the range of each amp. They are also different designs. I build amps and have one of each of these hand built with good components. The marshall 18 watt is a tighter sounding amp than the deluxe, which compresses quickly. This due to the different circuit designs. The 18 is a more punchy sound, but the more saggy nature of tweed makes it sustain a little more quickly. If you get the Marshall to 7-10 then you get a nice crunchy distortion. If you turn the deluxe to 12 it gives out. It's the nature of it. The trick on the deluxe is interaction of the volume controls. You have to fiddle with it but it will give nice results. The deluxe is really a plug and play amp and not a great pedal platform. The Marshall does that better, but is also great with just a cable. So I don't think one is really better. They both are great, and even more fun if both are used at the same time.

    I settled on my 5e3 clone with a Jensen P12R witch is the same with the Jensen P12Q as far as I know, but with 25W rating instead of 40W witch i think makes it better suited for home use (lower headroom and faster breakup). The other speaker i've tried is an Celestion Creamback 75W witch was nice too (and way more efficent) but I feel the Alnico Jensen is better suited for the bell like clean tones. Great speaker lineup though.

      I don't remember my log-in for this account so I'm using my band account to reply... Both these amps were built with parts from a company called Mable audio located in china. Marshall combo cabinet was built by Sourmash USA. The 5E3 cabinet came from Mable Audio and was built wrong as the speaker was centered in the baffle and that doesn't work because the speaker magnet and output tubes didn't clear one another, I had to build a new baffle. the 5E3 cabinet is pretty much junk but I still use it, the tweed isn't even real tweed, but more like tweed looking tolex... I will eventually replace the cabinet with a sourmash or mojo cab. The jewel assembly that came with the 5E3 was fake plastic, but all other parts in the kit seemed ok except the Chinese filter caps with F&T german caps.. I've been using the 5E3 on blues gigs exclusively for the past 6 months and have had no problems. I've got 10 amps including vintage marshall stacks, blackface Super Reverb, real 59 bassman, but for my TX blues trio I use and prefer the sound of this cheap 5E3 clone over anything I own... If I were going to build another 5E3, I would not order a cabinet from China, apply that $100 towards a better cabinet made in USAI also used the bluesbreaker on some gig;s it does good also, except ! gig was 4 piece and the other guitar player was going through a 45 and everyone was playing so loud I couldn't get enough headroom with just 18 watts and wished I'd brought an ego stack... :-)Kindest RegardsDW

      @meots 5 років тому

      Thanks for the reply David. Did you incorporate any mods to the 5E3 kit or did you build it to original specs? Also what speaker did you use? I’ve listened to a lot of 5E3 clones but I’ve yet to hear one that sounded as good as yours. That Texas blues tone is the sound I’m looking for. I’m researching kits now but haven’t decided on which one to go with. I think the speaker choice is going to play a big part of getting that tone.

    • @davidwolfe9391
      @davidwolfe9391 5 років тому +1

      I experimented with revoicing the amp a little in an attempt to make it more Les Paul friendly, but wound up going back to stock because I didn't like the as good as the stock and just tweaking the tone pot. I tried a few speakers, I was eventually turned onto the weber alnico classic, The gold alnico Celestion seemed to bright, and a cream celestion seemed to dark, vintage 30 seemed to stiff and The old alnico Jensen I have didn't seem to hold up to the low notes. The weber takes the abuse and handles the bottom end and has a velvety break-up that was very pleasing to my ear.. Speaker selection is -key with these little amps for sure. I had to take everything I thought I knew about amps and speakers, toss it out the window. I studied Keith Richards and other's, turns out a lot of 70's rock was actually recorded with 5E3 deluxe, ZZ Top especially, and also a lot of Eagles recordings Don Feilder "one of these night's" solo. There's a video On my channel titled Ladies Night where I used this amp, check it out and see what you think, it's un miced with a 3 piece band... Kindest RegardsDW

      Very nice playing and tone on Ladies Night Out David! Just a couple of more questions if you have time. I see Weber shows a few different Classic series speakers on their site. It looks as though only two of them would be fitting for a 5E3.... the 12A100 and the 12A125H. The 12A100 is rated at 15watts and the 12A125H comes in 20 and 30 watt versions. Exactly which one are you using? Any doping applied (Light, Med, Heavy)? And my only other question is what tubes are you using? Thanks again for taking the time to reply. This is going to save me a lot of trial and error......and money! Lol

    • @davidwolfe9391
      @davidwolfe9391 5 років тому +1

      I chose one of his 2017old stock 21A125-A - 30w light dope, apparently I'm hard on speakers so it was what Weber Recommended, also there's a 5E3 builder out in California, I believe his name is Rondo... He has a youtube video (Tweed Deluxe Volume and Tone Control Demo) that demonstrates in great depth how the tone and volume controls interact with one another both patched and un patched. for consistency and convenience I've been using mostly JJ tubes, but I'm sure there's another world of sound character that would come into play experimenting with RCA, Tungsol, etc...

      I totally agree! It drives me nuts when someone is demoing an amp or effect and they clutter up the signal chain with extraneous effects that only "muddy the water" sonically. What are we really listening to? I don't have a problem with stomp boxes at all, I have a bunch of them, but if you're putting out a demo video, you're not helping the viewer/ listener by "adding ambience". This is especially confusing to someone who doesn't know what a "clean blackface Fender" or a "chimey Vox AC30" or a "brown Marshall Plexi" is supposed to sound like. At the very least click it on and off during the demo and indicate to the viewer/listener when you're doing so! Thanks for letting me bitch! Your playing was on point, though.
