    I bought a 1995 R1100RS from a friend. It had sat for 7 yrs. Didn't run, no front brake, and he told me that the clutch was "slipping". Got a GREAT deal, since his wife wanted out of the garage anyway. So, Installed a new fuel pump/filter (now it ran). Emptied the tank, of course. Smelled like turpentine. Rebuilt the front master cylinder (now had front brake). Adjusted the clutch properly (no slip). Perfect! BUT...kept hearing squeaky noise when pulling out. Finally realized it was the alternator belt. Now good. What I'm getting at is...your videos are very helpful. Thank you.

    Thanks Chris. I bought my 2002 R1150RT about five years ago with 7k miles on it. It now has a little over 40k troublesome miles on it. I'm 73 years old and have owned many bikes. This R1150RT is easily the highest maintenance machine I've ever owned. I went to vocational school after high school and got a two year certification in Automotive Technology. I've worked in car dealerships and then as a field technician on forklift trucks. Life took me in a different direction at about 30 yo and I haven't wrenched professionally since then. Even with that background, I go to UA-cam for help. Your videos have been a lifesaver for me. If it weren't for aftermarket (Chinese?) parts and working on it myself, I couldn't afford to own it (love the pig). I intend to ride it until it gives out and then I'll quit riding altogether. It'll probably be the clutch. I've seen your video on that and there's no way in hell I'm taking that on. Thanks again. Stay healthy.

    Thanks Chris. Easy to do with your video on the side. It was about time to change it on my '97 r1100r. Little cracks were showing at 91.000 km. Never been changed I think. All good now thanks to you.

    I don’t have a garage or tools but I love watching these videos of a master craftsman at work on the R1100+. I learnt to appreciate the work of the technician that looks after my little baby. Fantastic work Chris, there are two pink pigs that escaped from the Pink Floyd photo shoot in London hoovering over Munich and Spandau, Berlin. J

    You should also the time with seconds on it. JK
    Thanks for remember that I do month and year on each part when I change it.
    The tip with the anti-seize paste is also important, especially on your own vehicle.
    I don't normally comment in SM, but I enjoy your videos for ten years now and not a single one that hasn't helped.
    I grew up in Germany (Munich) I rode all kind of motorcycles.
    Since here I bought a BMW R1200C as a project bike in parts, years ago.
    I made it running after two months, only because of your videos.
    Merry christmas and thanks a lot Chris.

    Well explained. Great vid. Has anyone experienced a bad alternator? I actually bought an Endro-Last alternator. I didn't install it yet because the ABS module and computer has to be removed to get to the alternator. So I'm waiting for the ABS module to go bad before replacing alternator. There is a company in Idaho (Module Master) that rebuilds the ABS module. In the meantime I'm putting more miles on the old alternator hoping it last longer than the ABS module.

      The alternator bearing usually fails and becomes horrendously noisy long before the charging stops.

    Doing my belt now on a 96 RT 1000. No oil-breather pipe fitted. Did some come out of BMW without them or has a previous owner removed it perhaps. Did some research and some 1100 owners were saying they'd never seen one there. ??????

    Only one question, why their alternator is belt driven ?? just so u had more issues with ur bike, same as we bmw car and buy new one every time ur repair bill skyrocket high???

    • @ChrisR.Harris

      Even Honda and Kawasaki use alternator belts on some models. Quiet, long-lasting and cheap.

    Question: I have a 2003 R1150RT-P, and upon removal of the inspection plate I discovered no vent tube installed - the one removed to remove the belt. The area was dry with no sign of oily residue (unlike the area around a crankcase vent on an oil truck). Approaching 74k miles made me look. Was the vent tube not installed on the RT-P variant?

    My bike is missing the breather pipe. 1100RT 1999. The holes for it are there but the pipe is missing. It's been running fine I'm just replacing the belt as maintenance. Should I order it or leave it since it works fine without?

    • @rogersgarage753
      @rogersgarage753 Рік тому

      Mine doesnt either. I have a 1998 R 1100 RT. In the parts catalog there is no parts numbers marked for the breather pipe on my Bmw, so there probably shouldnt be anything on these year models. But maybe it was on the first that comes from factory !? My bike running fine also. (sold new here in Norway, Europe).

    Whats the best way to get out a snapped bolt if it happens here on the cover chris?

    • @ChrisR.Harris
      @ChrisR.Harris  4 роки тому +1

      Drill it and time-sert if needed. Or run with just 3 bolts on the cover. It's just plastic unlike the R1200C with its chromed metal cover
      .

    My 2009 RT is a little different. I used a modified 1L bottle to take it off and put a new one on. This is definitely more involved even though the engines have some similarities, but the alternator is fixed. The new liquid cooled boxers don't have a belt, but good luck replacing the alternator. They basically traded the alternator for the clutch for a complex job replacing them. Does anyone make a simple bike anymore? :)

    • @ChrisR.Harris
      @ChrisR.Harris  4 роки тому +1

      Yes, 2005+ is very much different than the earlier models. I prefer simple. That's why I'm here; to keep the old machines going for you all.
