    A real life comment on HP for a boat. I had a 16' Crestliner Fish Hawk rated for 75HP but I had ordered it with a 45HP Mercury outboard. I had a fixed route we took where we stopped and anchored the boat for the day of fun. On the return trip, about 1/3 of the way back, the motor would empty a 5 Gallon tank of gas and stop running. I would hook up my 2nd tank to finish the trip home. Years later I sold that 45 HP motor and had a new 75 HP Mariner outboard on the same boat. We took the same route as always but to my surprise, I almost made it all the way back home before 1st tank of gas ran out, this with a much bigger engine. Engines powering a boat in water do not perform the same as auto engines. There is always a load on a boat engine. This experience showed me that it is always better to have a bigger boat motor working in it's mid range then to have a smaller outboard running at max. RPMs. It will show in fuel consumption and the bigger engine will last longer before repairs are needed.

    Great job on the video. I've owned several fast Checkmates and Hydrostreams, and have been researching the performance pontoon industry for over 10 years. I've watched several of your videos, and had to comment on this one. Your video is spot-on with the points you made about the differences between triple pontoon types and horsepower recommendations. Wish you guys were in Michigan instead of Minnesota, it's so rare to find a dealer that really knows their industry. Good job! JW

    Now this makes much sense. I heard it explained on another channel that tritoons are for boats 20 and up generally. It also didn't get into the different options for the center tube.

    Really enjoying all of your videos, wish you were my dealer when I purchased pontoon in 2011. I've been very happy with the boat (240 Manitou Oasis SHP w Etec 250 HO) but the process was tedious with that dealer as I seemed to know more about the boat and how to tune it than he did. You have much more knowledge and explain things very well.

      jack fat quick question, I’m looking at similar boat as yours. How fast do you get with the 250 HO?

      Top speed for my boat with 3 passengers 5800 rpm is 48 mph. Cyclone TBX 17 4 blade stainless prop. Hole shot is great and the boat stays gripped up very well in the turns. I've pulled 4 skiers with no problem. Motor runs great and strong. Only issue has been tilt relay failed at 3 years. I've been very happy with this motor (Gen 1). I don't run WOT very often at all but if I need to, the motor has always delivered. Has been great combination on this boat (2011 Manitou 240 SHP Oasis).

    Great job on video! and you should mention that the more you run on top of the water like on water ski's the more jarring and harshness to the ride. For people who are not so concerned about speed and want a smooth ride they can eliminate the lifting strakes to get the benefits of more lift and smoother ride. Lookup 3rd toon on you tube I was the first on my lake (2008) did all work and research myself to have a fishing toon for 4 ft waves on the big lake with the smoothest ride. Currently have a 200 hp johnson on 1988 landau. Top speed only 36 miles an hour but the smoothest ride like cadillac. 24in center and 19 in u shaped sides 24 ft long.

    Very informative video, thank you. But I'm curious though, you didn't mention anything about transoms and I've always thought that how sturdily the transom was built was what determined how big a motor you could put on a pontoon boat. Could you enlighten me in that area a little bit?

    Owner of a 21' tritoon with strakes and undershielding with a Mercury Pro XS 115 CT here, it seems to get up on plane just fine and hits 35mph at WOT with a family of four and our gear, so i can't exactly agree with the statement about 115hp not being enough. Enjoyed the rest of the video though.

    • @chad1755
      @chad1755 5 років тому +2

      21' is pretty small compared to a typical 24' which I think he's mostly talking about in this video, so that's probably why. 115 is plenty for a 21', but not so much for a 24.

    And why don't build a hull on a "w" format? The stability wouldn't bem better? Could be more expensive, but could increase velocity with stability.

    Love your videos, have learned a lot from them! I do have two kinda snarky comments: I agree with the one comment in your video about what size motor is for me, you don't really stick to topic and you veer off into the reliability and customer service of Yamaha. You stop talking about motor sizes and applications right when you get to 90 and 115 hps. Second, in this video on Tri-Toons: Is that a roll of toilet paper on your desk next to your coffee commuter mug? Just seemed odd, haha!
