She feels relaxed because of the placebo effect, period, but if you want to try it there's no need to buy solid gold "seeds", just use actual mustard seeds as intended...
They are not sold gold they are gold plated magnets. Really who cares if it's the placebo effect. If she feels better she feels better. Have you ever experienced mental health issues?! The placebo effect is still legitimate relief, even if it's created in your own brain.
Agree 💯
@@brittanywinn3955 The point is that she can get the same placebo-induced relief from the mustard seeds, there's no need to pay for the manufacture of expensive and wasteful single-use gold-plated magnets when natural seeds from the garden will do the same job for free. It's predatory to take advantage of people with physical or mental health problems and charge them through the nose for placebo "therapies".
@@brittanywinn3955 Placebo effect is a thing, but I really would love to know how much this woman is profiting out of these bs gold seeds, I find it pretty cruel to take advantage of people who are suffering selling them those fancy soundigs bs.
@@alexandragatto I partially agree, but- judging by the big picture most things in today's society are "predatory" so why irk to even pin point this little lady's clinic?
As a student studying Audiology, this is an audiologists worst nightmare. Not only is there no scientific-evidence that this method works, if these things fall into your ear canal, it is going to be SERIOUSLY hard to get out. In extreme cases, you'd have to go through surgery to remove it. Worse, it can obstruct your ear drum, causing you to have hearing loss. Please think twice about getting this done.
your ear canal isn't just an endless tunnel, if one were to fall in you could rinse it out with some warm water... (but i also think this is a non-scientific method that doesn't do shit)
I agree 💯. It doesn't make sense any way 🤪
@cherrydoll how would it get IN your eardrum??? Do you mean the ear canal?
@cherrydoll you'd definitely know if a bead of that size would roll into your ear canal. that gets REALLY itchy. however, scratching your ear canal with a q-tip is a bad idea since then you could actually cause damage by pushing the bead against your ear drum -- but trust, kids get beads rinsed out of their ears ALL the freaking time. little idiots.
@cherrydoll it's literally what happens at the ER if you have anything in your ear. it gets rinsed out with oil and water or pulled out with tweezers.
if this "works" it's because of the "placebo effect". it works because you believe it works.
So then is it a placebo if it works because you believe it?
This is one of those videos where I wish I saw the amount of dislikes lol
theres a chrome extension that lets u see the number of dislikes, i have it and theres 269 dislikes right now
No way! What’s the extension??

Hey R29, I love the macro beauty series but I’ve noticed that in pretty much all of your videos that showcase non-Eurocentric treatments/procedures, you never get the expert to explain the cultural background and where the practice comes from beyond just a sentence. Considering the damage that the co-opting of traditional practices by westerners has had on ethic communities (eg: yoga), it would be really helpful for your viewers if you did more to educate them on where these alternative treatments/practices are coming from
West Hollywood. She said it in the video. West Hollywood is not in europe. Ergo not a Eurocentric treatment.
I'm on the side of IDGAF, all I care is that it is scientifically proven
Agreed!
Yup I agree!
@@AVA-hu4yf Actually this is an off-shoot of ear acupuncture which was developed by a Frenchman in the late 50s. It's a European invention appropriating the cachet of traditional Asian medicine 🤫
I don't think that they actually do much. It's all in the brain.
Insinuating that this is a feasible replacement for scientifically-proven treatments like medication and therapy for conditions like anxiety, depression, and OCD is so dangerous. Using this in tandem with other treatments might be helpful for some, but unless there's hard proof that it works it shouldn't be used as a primary treatment.
Agreed. I’m always concerned when people say medication is just a “bandaid” bc it’s never intended to cure mental illness but to help with your baseline levels. I’m okay with people trying holistic things but like you said this should be in tandem with methods that have been proven to help like medication and therapy.
Pills are a worse option….
I agree. To me that is akin to telling a diabetic that insulin is band-aid for their condition. I’m not against alternative treatments, but they are NO substitute for therapy and/or medication.
Chinese medicine goes back very far.. meridian points on the body are used.. LoL go get an acupressure massage and tell me that there’s no science to support that you feel great.. Lol..
@@arianamooon Being old doesn't mean it's right. There's only anecdotal evidence that it works, and that's likely at least in part due to placebo. Modern methods are backed up by real science and hard evidence. I'm not saying there's no value in more ancient methods, just that they're not a replacement for modern ones.
An extra 3-5 minutes giving us more details on what the procedure actually is, how it’s done, diagrams to show where in the mind/brain those points affect. The price, how long it lasts, maybe a doctors opinion vs a wellness practitioners opinion. Just MORE. I felt like I didn’t quite know enough even though I watched the whole video.
How long do they last/stay on?
How much is it?
Can they be reused?
So much info you could of included here....
Right lol
Yea Ikr, is it a needle ? How does it stick, I really don’t get it
Quick rundown because R29 didn't give any info really. It's called auriculotherapy and originated in its current form in France in around 1957, though was practised in China from around 100BC with a nonstandard format. The ear seeds used here last anywhere from one to two weeks, it's usually around £30. The seeds are single use and adhered using either a small strip of medical grade adhesive tape or attached to a small circle of adhesive as a prepared seed. Auriculotherapy can also use magnets, vibrational frequencies, acupuncture needles and electrical stimulation depending on where you go. 24 carat gold seeds are utterly unnecessary in my opinion.
This is the old crystal therapy rebranded, it works because it keeps you aware of acupuncture points plus human interaction, this relieves tension an allow the person to be more aware and break the compulsive cycles of the mind. It's meditation by suggestion.
Oh my god, quitting her actually helpful antidepressants because they're "euro centric medicine", as if people only take prescription meds in European countries? How misguided. Just to put little beads in your ears. Please quit spreading psudoscience Refinery, especially in times like these.
This was big 20 years ago. It was a different name but same concept. They did it for smoking ceasation, food cravings. I hope it helps them. It didn’t work then.
About 11 years ago I did something similar with ear acupuncture to lose weight and I lost 100lbs 🤷🏽♀️
@@Bloom2Grow so glad it worked for you. It didn’t work for my friends.
@@Bloom2Grow because of placebo
@@Bloom2Grow can't believe ppl actually believe in this
@@lester2162 well, whatever it was it worked for me lol I’m thinking of doing it again.
I believe that these work, indigenous ppl have been doing this for centuries BUT I am 100% sure Charmee’s depression/anxiety/OCD stems from her childhood trauma just like so many other people. These ear seeds are to assist in your healing journey but won’t actually heal why you needed this in the first place.
wise thoughts dear
She needs to get psychotherapy instead of doing this bs
@@jbb8261 I agree, she should get therapy but therapy is super expensive! In California, which is where I think she is (and I also live in LA), depending on who you go to, it could be $100-300 a session. I did therapy to help with my mental health for a year, and only because of my specific insurance, it costs $45 a session, which is more than most people can afford already. But without my insurance, the price would be $290.
That’s why it’s so frustrating, these are very common issues that no one can get treated because its costs so much! So a lot of people go to these sudo-science scams instead, essentially because it’s all they can afford to do and it gives them hope.
i’m not sorry but this is a such a scam. it’s sad how people take advantage of those dealing with disorders.
So all the eastern traditions are just pointless trash!? Sounds pretty racist. You’re ragging on this like there’s some huge 😆 risk lol!
Lmao what a scam
Lol I’ll show this video to my bf & tell him to buy me a 24 K gold necklace, because when the gold touches my neck, it’ll help aid digestion, promote circulation & decreases anxiety.
I wish there was more feedback from the clients that get these different procedures done 😄👍
I'm extremely disappointed in this channel for promoting total BS. This sort of thinking leads to people shunning actual science in favor of dangerous woo-woo.
DIY pimple sticker + mustard seed
Personally, I got a shen men ear piercing, and after living with it for one year I can say that its helped with my anxiety, but not my depression.
i think the daith piercing is supposed to do the same thing
So this is essentially a form of acupuncture
Sort of, but not really. Acupuncture goes into the skin where as these sit on top of the skin and have NO pressure. Therefore, they are really just jewelry and don't do ANYTHING.
She is so pretty, I would have loved to see the results after a few days.
I got a shen men piercing years ago on my left ear and I still have it till now. I don't know if it helped with anything, though. I've maybe only had 1 anxiety attack in years, if i'm getting it right, but i'm not sure if the piercing has anything to do with it. I'm wearing it, because it looks pleasing, also because I read it can help reduce anxiety(I was nearing my finals).
Also, this thing didn't heal for 2 years.
If anything she should have got them actually pierced so the "effects" would last, along with not worrying about them falling into her ear.
This is off topic but she has stunning eyes an eye shape. Never seen an eyeshape like hers. Upturned almond shape. Gorgeous eye color as well.
Anything you believe, will work. If you tell yourself that you're happy and have a good body, you will!
I believe i can fly-splat.
This just sounds like a load of horse crap to me, it probably was more of a therapy session not those magnet stickers working 🤦♀️🤷♀️
How long do they stay on for?
Oh wow! This is awesome. I believe I need to try this. Not to mention it looks beatiful too!!!
Has anyone told this woman that there is no cure for depression, anxiety, and (as far as I am aware) OCD?
Lies you tell
No "cure" for OCD. It's a lifetime chronic condition. You CAN decrease symptoms including compulsions and intrusive thoughts through CBT and ERP, and OCD can be treated effectively, but there is no "cure". This feels very exploitive of this person who just wants their mental health to get better.
I always wanted to try that!
Wish we would've gotten an update to say whether it actually helped or not
I was expecting a piercing instead
How is taking medicine eurocentric? I'm genuinely curious.
Can you do this without having to use 24 karat gold seeds? Because that is ridiculously expensive. It must be. 24 karat gold?
I am not one to knock down or discourage what makes someone happy, healthy, or mentally sound and stable.
But for the love of God please don't stop taking you regular PROVEN medicine because you THINK OR FEEL LIKE your other one is working or working better.
Just take both. You'll feel doubly better by that logic, okay?
(Also the specialist said that the don't fall off, so that negates one fear I and other have in the comments 😅)
I too suffer from depression and anxiety with insomnia. Interesting to hear Charme speak she speaks so well and calming hope it helped her
A cute implies that you won’t need to keep up/maintain the thing that has cured you. This is also just a bandaid, if it works. Also like… literally, it’s a literal bandaid
of course,it's LA. you can sell them wrapped shit 🤣🤣🤣
This is 100% placebo effect.
How long do you keeps them on for?
They’re stickers so they prob last a few days
Do they come out while in shower
They essentially little stickers so they’ll eventually fall off over time. I’m guessing water may make them fall off quicker
Incredible that this channel can promote incredible journalism like the Shady series then turn around and promote a complete psudoscientific scam lol
No, no I'm not falling for it. 🤪
How much does this cost?
In Asian medicine, we have similar bead stickers for ears that help relieve nausea or small conditions. I’ve never tried them but I’ve seen some friends use them when they feel sick. Not sure why you would need gold beads tho.. seems a bit overpriced buy I guess the color could be the draw…?
some will eat this up but i can see right through it
I use to go to an acupuncturist and they offered this type of procedure for weightloss..I believe in it and believe it can be really helpful
wild how y’all condone this
How much is this? I need this! 😂 you two are both adorable 🥰
Did I miss where they mentioned costs?? 👀
I tried this since I have insomnia and such and guess what it didn't work.
The "Scorpio" necklace said it all. You didn't learn anything about your body. She gave you a pamphlet
So it’s just a sticker with an overpriced ball attached to it???
Does this actually work? Is there any evidence?
I don’t think so. This was big in the early 90s and I remember you could get staples in certain places. They would even do this at nail salons. Then it just died out. I think if it was really effective we would all know about it by now.
It’s kinda similar to acupuncture so some people may believe work for them but I doubt there’s much scientific backing
@@laurac86 acupuncture does work and there is evidence for it, but this seems iffy to me

Yay Mona’s back!
I love what all these women are doing, that are shown on Refinery
In Indonesia, we called it susuk.
Hmm....
Before the video, an ad played, it was for ear seeds! Haha 😅
this is so cool! i know gold and silver has amazing properties and i love this! might have to try it sometime! plus they look cute too
See, this is what happens when we don’t have a good affordable healthcare system. Instead of going to a doctor or a trained psychiatrist who could help with these very common mental health issues, people resort to methods that aren’t scientifically proven because they’re cheaper or more affordable. This feels like preying on peoples weaknesses to make money. And what if those fall into her ears while she’s sleeping? It could be physically dangerous too…
I feel like this is more spiritual than medicinal.
the poor ear is innocent of all this
ear: 😧
Sis
Is this a permanent piercing?
No it’s just little stickers. And they will wash off with water or fall off after 3-5 days!
I got a candle blessed by a priest and I finally slept like a baby and was totally relaxed. Not sure about ear seeding.
I’m doing this for sure.
You should definitely try it!
WTWhat?
It's like gold sucks the energy or something
Sucks money too!
It seems like a placebo effect.
So are these dangerous if swallowed by a infant?
why do an infant try to swallow that stuff im confused?!
@@annnguyen789 because they put anything into their mouth
This sounds like a scam
Why….
I promise you, you dont need a gold one. you can literally roll up an aluminum foil for it. I'm korean and my father often did seeing for himself by doing this
Of course this is in Hollywood... 🤣
My mindz like - golden pimples. Piercings. Looks cool. Wtf
Wtf???
cant believe people can trust this ..
🖤
I think I need these seeds around my butt hole! My butt hole stresses me out.
I think I’ll stick to the euro centric procedures lmao, after all we live in the west don’t we…
If it was only this easy to help with mental health …. What a scam 😭
Looks like pimples to me
I’m obsessed with ear seeding! Ordered these from Nordstrom’s last summer and can say it actually works!
Thanks for sharing! I’m on it!
are they expensive?
