On turkey hunting...
I had my first successful turkey hunt the year before last. On the last day before the season ended, I finally heard one a good 100 yards away. I spent about an hour calling him in to me and waited for him to get within an ethical range (30 yards). Once he cleared a pair of trees, I took him with a single shot 12GA shotgun. He turned out to be a massive 21.5lb tom with 1 1/2" spurs and a 10" beard.
The excitement comes in that they can bust you at any moment as you sit laid up against a tree right there in the open, no ground blinds, no tree stands, no shooting houses...just you and what you have in your hands. Their eyesight is spectacular and the slightest movement will send them flying off, so up until the moment that you take them, it's touch or go.
The year before, I had a bunch of turkeys swarming around me and doing their dance during mating season, but it was the day after turkey season. Still great to watch. I have a video of some of it on my channel; "New York State Catskill Mountains Turkey Hunt Redemption". The turkey on the thumbnail was the one I took on Memorial Day, 2019.
