a couple months ago I took the prefilter off of a canister filter and squished it out in a bucket of rain water. about 30 days later I walked out to the bucket to see if any infusoria was growing in the water , there were 2 baby zebra danios in it ! I guess the eggs were on the sponge prefilter...
I have had 8 guppy fry in a bucket with cheap Amazon heater, large seeded sponge filter, and Java moss for over a month. Regular water changes and water testing and they’re doing great! BTW, nice microbiology textbooks. I work in a medical lab and have one of the same on my shelf!!
I made a 6 gallon bucket aquarium and kept it for 5 years until the wife threatened to divorce. Substrate was 1 inch potting soil+vermicompost- 9:1 and 2 inch sand layers from bottom respectively. I put plenty of plants. No filter, no bubbler. I hanged a plastic bottle upside down with CO2 trapped in it (refilled every 3 days) and used a regular 9 watt 6500k LED bulb, 6.5 hrs daily. It made a pretty(at least in my eye) shrimp tank for first the 2 years, then turned into a guppy town after annhilating shrimp by a CO2 overdose accident.
I have to move winter at the beginning of the year and have 3 betta. Was considering a bucket, with each fish in its own bag, in a covered bucket that has a hole on the top, filled with water and wrapped in a heater towel to try and keep things warm since it's a min 18h drive
Much easier to use a battery air pump and a sponge filter. Also, using a cup or specimen container to slowly add back in fresh water helps with small fish not getting tossed around.

I've only used buckets as temporary homes for my Molly fry. Let 'em grow a bit, then introduce them to one of the other Molly tanks (most of what I do is with Mollies. Love 'em to death).
The only thing I don’t love is how tall and narrow a bucket is. I think a plastic tote or basin would work much better in terms of horizontal swimming space but other than that a container is a container and a tank is just another container.

I am moving some of my fish from California to Illinois soon. 8 german blue rams, a mix of zebra danios, guppies, and corys, as well as some crystal red shrimp. Going to use separate buckets for each but each bucket will have a small sponge filter, usb heater 10w, and some plants. I am mainly worried about the shrimp because they are so sensitive but hoping for the best. Wish me luck!

I have to laugh at myself after watching this. I get anxious just bringing fish home in bags from club meetings or fish stores, and here you are saying "a couple days to a couple WEEKS" in a bucket. I'll be way more chill about transporting/temporary housing fish after this video. Thank you!

What about goldfish. I cant afford a big tank to keep them the shopkeeper gave them to me in a blow then i did some research and found out how wrong it is..for now im keeping them in a 5 gallon bucket and i will upgrade them into a tub soon...will they survive? I have a sponge filter

ha I'm not stalking you but I really was contemplating moving my bullied angelfish to a bucket until I set up my 100 in a month...hmm I'd rather him live in a bucket than get bullied. He's in a 70 with community fish besides the pair...what do you think?
Ive always used a 10gal tank for treatment of fish with a lot of success. I use the sponge filter from the main tank with 4-5gals tank water and then the rest conditioned new water. The reason i like the tank vs a bucket is because each fish is different. Ive had the a colombian redtail tetra with a serious eye infection/wound who was back to 100 in a week and have also had a blue glo tetra with eye issues who had to stay in there for months with different types of treatments. So overall, i like the tank because it offers some flexibility of being a longer term home. I decorate it as well so the fish can have hiding spots. No substrate. Has worked great so far. The key to it all is taking action sooner than later and not waiting to see if a fish gets worse. If theyre not acting right or stopped eating take them out lol
@@mstevens6723 I use a 10 gallon tanks for growing plants, my son's nano tank, and one as a quarantine tank... But someone without the space for additional tanks can swing by home depot and buy a $5 bucket to use as quarantine or a hospital.
@@velcapitan oh absolutely. I thought you were asking which do people prefer for hospital or quarantine. You can definitely do the bucket set up no problem, just prefer the tank is all. Especially for s sick fish cause its easier to view. I actually have some larger tanks not set up since we dont have room right now. When we set up the 10 gal for hospital use its on the floor lol
Ummm so all you are saying is treat a bucket like an aquarium. Jeez mate that is very poor content from your calibre. What a waste of time. Go Mr America
Great info here! Thank you. I just placed an order for some Legit food 😊 I am excited for my fish to try it. Have a great weekend!
Thanks Audra! Shipping out Monday 😀😎
Every time I've had to keep fish in a bucket I have used a sponge filter. Seems way easier than the HoB.

you can check online with what markers on a bucket/plastic container is food grade. (Rock on Tidy Cat litter buckets!)

I imagine the fish feel more secure in a bucket where they don’t get startled by people walking by as much.

I actually really like this set up for a temp setup
If you're worried about plastic leach - try a food-grade safe bucket.
I’d much prefer a sponge filter driven by a usb air pump which is also great for long car rides. Also you didn’t mention a heater if needed.
Good ideas!

Buckets are great for quarantine for small or nano fish. Hornwort which I always have in most tanks works well in buckets also.
👍💖👍

you should have named the video: "how to convert a bucket into a nano pond"
very instructive thanks

Very interesting video, keep on 👍🏻💪🏻💪🏻
Are you using Tap or RO water? What are your parameters?
Tap water, city water is pretty soft here 👍
Would I have to take water from the aquarium? What about water changes? Would it be the same thing as regular aquarium changes?
That tank looks like a little paradise!
👍😎 That tank at the end, looked nice, kinda basic looking, but still beautiful. I liked it a lot. 🖖
Cheers!

dude that tank kicks ass, i dont remember seeing that one.
I think this is good for a long term setup too just using small fish
I have a colony of shrimp I keep in a bucket!
What clip light is that you have on the bucket? That looks super handy 👌🏻
Finnex plants led, onf makes a fancyer version for rimless tanks too
Great tips and information, this will be very helpful in many different situations.
What about a heater ?
Can you add a heater there?
Lol I kept my fish in a 5 gallon bucket with a sponge filter for months when I was moving houses
Sponges are great for that!
I never considered the possibility, now i want to create a bucket kive plant small fish accuarium

Gotta get some stickers
Check the deals on the site 😀😎 🙏🙏
I've kept fish in a cooler for almost six months, they even reproduced in there couple times....
Its not all bad! 😎🥰
Thanks for another great video! ❤
🥰🥰
Moving 3 glo fish in a bucket without any of this setup just plain water, how long can I keep the bucket closed with a lid ? journey is 12hrs.
Use tank water and a handful of plants and you could be good for a few days at least, just watch the temp if its really hot

Nice. What's the name of the fish in 0:34 ???
Interesting random topic. Quarantine or hospital bucket.

Oh and i dont use a light. I dont know how much it effects things, but it seems to take some stress away from the fish
