Great discussion! It is sad that sometimes we assume that disabled people cannot think. Sometimes, their bodies just won't let them do or say what they want. I have a daughter with autism and even though she speaks, she has a hard time articulating what she is trying to say sometimes. Even though she has difficulty doing many tasks, I just refuse to give up trying. Thanks for bringing up this topic. I will definitely check out the book. Merry Christmas!
I've seen this book around everywhere, and i'm always drawn to it but i've never actually gotten it, this has now convinced me to go read it. thanks :) this reminds me a little of Wonder by R.J Palacio, and i loved that book.
+LilyLexicon I just purchased Wonder for my nephew as a Christmas present! I haven't read it, but with the glowing recommendations and reviews on it, I felt like it was a safe purchase. I hope you love this book and I will have to read Wonder with that comparison!
As someone who has autism and stands for acceptance and the normalization for ANY disability, I just HAD to read this book. I’m only on chapter 12, but already I find this book so great, because it shows that even though on the outside melody looks like she can’t do much and is not intelligent, but in reality she actually is really smart and loves things like watching documentaries or books which people might not think when they see her. I really think more people should read this book to get a better understanding of disabilities on the outside vs inside
I agree with you 110% I read this book a few years back and it has stuck with me sence! Just because they cant function the same way as everyone else dosen't mean they deserve to be treated diffrently. I loved the review by the way!! Totally subscribing!!! PS. Love the lipstick
The whole book is so awesome the end is the best part (don't read if you haven't read the book) The whole book is what she wrote. It's her auto biography she wrote a 295 page autobiography for her teacher
Your review videos are quickly becoming my favorite videos. I totally 100% agree with everything you said on this video. I don't agree with anyone telling someone they will never do something whether because of a disability or because of any other multitude of reasons. This story sounds very sad but also sounds like an important read. I will definitely be checking it out in the future. Thanks again for a wonderful suggestion.
+MichEllisLife This comment made my day! Thank you! This book is sad at some points, but it's uplifting and beautiful for the most part. I cried a few times because I was so overwhelmed with happiness.
I just finished the book today it was so good my favorite part is when she stepped up at the end and my favorite person is melody I love her so much she is so courageous
Thanks!!! I have to ready to books by June by the same author. I chose Sharon Draper, and out of my mind was one of the books I chose! This made me really want to read it!!!!!!!
This book is great. The Good Reads reviews on this really ticked me off too. I'm going to school to become a teacher, and I think this story is so important for teachers and young people alike to read. This book is so important, and I am so glad you did this review!
I love Sharon M. Draper, I read a lot of her books growing up and I actually have not read Out of My Mind but I think I will definitely have to check it out. Your review made it sound really good!
+Kayla Rayne it's funny you say that! I actually talk about my favorite book of hers, Romiette and Julio, in my newest Top 5 video if you want to check it out! It's a really good retelling of Romeo & Juliet!
I have a hard time finding diverse books that I'm really interested in [because I don't like YA for the most part] and I also don't want to be like: "Oh, I HAVE to read something with a disabled protagonist so that I can check that box, yay" - but this sounds so interesting! You described it really well and I put it on my wishlist. Thanks for the review.
+Literaturlärm Sometimes it feels like seeking out those books is like checking a diversity box, but if it's something you are striving to make a part of your regular reading experience, then it's just being inclusive of all types of characters. This book really discussed the disability in an empowering way and focused on Melody as the main character and not a lesson. This book has very heavy middle grade language so if that's something that bothers you about middle grade/YA then this might not be the book for you. I am trying to find more books in both the adult genre and the YA genre that have a MC who gets to be an amazing, fleshed out character while living with a disability.
Thanks for sharing your wonderful discussion on that and yes I already had listen to that book and it’s kind of sad how much that teachers aren’t aware of the abilities that a person with a disability can do I say this as a blind person
This book made me feel for the main character....when she was nervous, my heartbeat sped up. When she was crushed, I felt completely terrible....when the Wiz Kid Team apologized to her made me feel...conflicted. The guilt they felt and the feeling Melody felt.... If I continue any further, I might get knee deep into spoilers. I picked this book up out of pure interest....I regret reading it first because I don't think the other book I bought would be able to match that level of emotion I felt.
+AStitchInTime It is such a worth while book! It does not have the coverage it deserves and I just need people to experience Melody's story and understand how wonderful, intelligent, and sassy she is!
#CharactersDisabilities If you love characters with disabilities you should definitely check out Eric Lindstrom's new novel, Not If I See You First. It's so amazing! Can't wait to read this one over Christmas.
+TheBooksBuzz I just added it to my TBR! I am trying to purchase less and read more from my library in the coming year so I will see if they have it for me to grab right away! Thanks! :D
Spoiler alert only read if you finished book It infuriated me so much when the wiz team left her behind, and they didn’t invite her to breakfast because they didn’t want to deal with her accommodations. And I despise Rose, almost more than I despise Claire. Clair is just a straight up mean girl from the get go but rose seems like a god friend at first but then doesn’t call Melody to tell her about the flight change and gets embarrassed by her about things she can’t control. I know they are only elementary school kids but it still made me so sad and mad. Amazing book though.
I read this book my sister has cerebral palsy ( one the left) I loved the book and she can’t walk and her speech is not the best bit that is all I have to say
Who is watching this in 2021? Nobody? Just me right? Wait, who am i kidding? Nobody is even watching this in 2021, sooo its just me o^o, plus, i have that book and im reading it for the 2nd time XD

That’s so good to hear, since I loved this book and I’m about to get Wonder in a few days! :)
I’m reading that for a school, I love it!! I’m only on chapter 18 but it’s so emotional and so inspiring
I cried so many times at the end 😢
@@nikotamagawa1899 no i didn't cry ether but it was sad
