Good to know about not crushing them at the end while storing. I will take that into account next time for sure!
Thanks for the video
Happy Gardening

I grow and dry a lot of basil. I cut the leaves off the stems and use a clean window screen to dry the leaves. And then move them into a brown paper bag and leave the cover open with a cloth over it until the leaves are dry. The kids love to help. The basil comes out dark green versus the green brown you get from using a low temp oven. Good methods!
Thanks for sharing Corey!
@@LearnToGrow1 I like how you explain a series of methods to dry the herbs and the effects. I also like how you emphasize waiting for the pre-flower phase where the oils peak. I used to hang and bundle dry when I lived in the mountains because I would let my herbs go to flower and they tended to grow quite large due to my busy schedule it was the best option for me. I used to grow a lot of medicinal herbs, I am hoping to do so next year at my new place but I need more compost to establish the beds.
I have never seen the cut bag method which is something I myself would have never thought of: very crafty. My Blendtec with the WildSide jar and a few pulses processes the herbs nicely into a shake format without turning it to dust which is easy to do if you have a high RPM or sharp-bladed blender. I use glass Ball jars to store my herbs with good sized food-grade silicone desiccant pouches or cylinders. A pint jar can store enough dried herb for years. My old home was historic and rustic but my new home is modern so hanging herbs don't fly anymore.
I love your kids in the background, so cute 💖
Thank you Ashley! They are taller than me now! :)
Hello! You're very welcome! It's a learning experience for us all :) I have made so many mistakes too Lol...I'm glad you are enjoying the videos and found this helpful. Have fun drying your herbs, you will do great especially with your new dehydrator, I need to get one :) Thanks to you as well for watching and your kind words! Happy gardening and enjoy your week!
Misilla
I keep those moisture packets from prescription bottles and use them in my dried herb bottles . They are free and food safe.
9aspengold5 Great idea ! Thank you for stopping by!
Hi Misilla - great makeup on the Halloween costume! Bet you scared some kids - what a fun mom you are!
Thanks for the shout out! I love drying herbs and will be trying your natural method too along with my microwave method. I think they look pretty hanging up on the wall in a kitchen or dining room. Thanks for the great step by step! Kim

Hi Kim! Thank you! I scared my own kids Lol! I'm glad you found this helpful and you're very welcome...You make great video tutorials! Have a great week! Misilla
Great info, nice tip with the microwave. I'm totally trying that next time.
Awesome! I'm gonna steal your dental floss idea! :p thanks for the vid!
Lol you’re welcome 😊 Thanks for watching!
I've never had very good luck naturally drying herbs. I love the idea of the paper bag and you have a lot of tips, too. Thank you!
Cee Gee I hope this method will work out better the next time around. Thanks for watching!
My grandmother just stripped the leaves from fresh herbs and laid the leaves on paper to dry on a extra table she hadin her house then she put them in spice containers to use all winter.
Wonderful idea! Thanks for watching!
I will try your method of drying them out in the greenhouse this winter. I put okra pods and zucchini in there and they dried out nicely. Great job Misilla.
Chuck
I keep it warm in there. It is almost like summer in there year round. I heat it to around 55-60 degrees every night and the sunlight pushed the temps around 100 or more during the day!
Chuck
Thanks for showing your methods, we all needs to learn how to take care of our own selves more. Wish you had more views, thanks!
Ryan Jones You're welcome Ryan! I appreciate you taking the time to watch! Thank you and cheers to good health!
Gf, the dental floss has a cutter, so why are you using scissors? 🤣😝 I enjoy your videos. Thank you!
I can’t remember if it wasn’t working! 😂 Omgosh this was 9 years ago!😁
Thanks for watching ☺️
Microwaves do things to food that scientists still can't understand.
Yes, diaelectric heating I'm sure really stumps them.
I agree. Never use a microwave to dry herbs. 🙄
thank you for taking the time to make this video. I've been using a dehydrator to dry the herbs and then a coffee grinder to pulverize them. I love the idea of using the bags and letting time do the work, then breaking them up as you use them. gonna take your advice next time around. :)
Will Lewis Glad you found this helpful, thanks for watching!
Thank you :-). You have been a big help. I wish I found your channel sooner. I failed at drying sunflowers & herbs over the summer. I hung them in my greenhouse. It was a moldy mess. But we learn from trial and error... lol :-).. I picked up a food dehydrator. I'm going to attempt to dry herbs that way.. lol :-). Thank you for all your great videos :-).
I love the children yelling in background-just like my home! Thank you :)
Queen Puabi You're welcome! I thought at first it might have been too much distraction, but that's our home.😊Thanks for watching !
Very interesting to know how to dry herbs
Very helpful. Thanks for taking time to explain. BTW, loved the moment at the end when the kids is yelling.
So glad you found this helpful! Thank you for stopping by! Yes the joys of parenthood...love it!
Nice! I'd like to have a greenhouse like that someday...not quite as big though :)
Hi Chuck! Sounds great, is it still warm in your area? We are about to hit 32 degrees soon! As long as it's warm enough in the greenhouse they should do well. Thanks Chuck! Have a great week! Misilla
Thank you for sharing this. We are growing a variety of herbs this year, and will be drying them to use later in the year. Thanks! Subscribed
You're welcome! Glad you found this helpful! Thank you so much for watching and subscribing!
I use Windows Live Movie Maker, hope this helps! Thanks for watching! Misilla
The best storage and also very low cost way are cardboard boxes.
great video, i just subscribed. I have some thyme i just got about a week ago, i love cooking with that. And i have rosemary growing since 2012, i just started cooking with it this year. I hung it in my car port to dr. And thanks for sharing when to harvest and dry. i love the oils and aroma from them a lot!
+Plant Nation Good for you! I bet your herbs are established by now and you can propagate them for more plants! So many benefits from these wonderful plants. Just infused some oil with herbs this summer! Thank you very much for subscribing and I hope you continue to find the videos helpful and enjoy them too! Misilla
for all the people out there that is drying herbs for medicinal uses like tinctures and salves, I would NOT recommend drying herbs in the microwave for the microwaves produced to dry the herbs effect the frequency of the herb suppressing the medicinal properties of the herb.if you don't have a dehumidifier a good way to dry herbs is to have them hung up with air blowing through them via a fan :)
cmp572 Thank you for your input! After reading more about the effects of microwaves on our foods I am trying not to use unless I really need to.Thanks for watching! Misilla
thank you
didn't know herbs have "frequencies". how does the frequency relate to the medicinal property of herbs exactly? Any scientific research that proves this hypothesis?
Michael Lovely kirlian photography is one example, everything is always vibrating and resonating a certain frequency, microwaves emit radiation and can damage the cellular structure of plants ... lowering the frequency the plant vibrates at , which in turn lowers our own frequency , eating foods with higher frequencies and that are alive are better for our bodies some herbs are more powerful and healing due to them being higher frequency in nature
Thank you for the wonderful information. This really helped. I am new to growing herbs.
Birgit Williams You're welcome! I'm glad you found this helpful! I just published a couple of videos on freezing and drying herbs that you find helpful as well! Thanks for watching and commenting :) Misilla
Hi there.
Good information.
Keep on growing.
Have a good day. 👍☺
Hi I have started air drying sambong leaves for my daughter recently diagnosed with leukemia.
Wishing your daughter well.
I have been doing this for ages but tend not to bother with the mint and basil which I usually have growing indoors anyway. I specifically wanted to know about mint having had problems with it in the past. Thanks for the video and I think I will have to explore oven drying because I am going Off Grid for the next season and I won't have a microwave (thus the visit here for any tips lol!).
Hi, I don't use the microwave either. Tried it once, but I think it's destroys the beneficial constituents of the herbs. Mints and Basil contain more moisture so they're best to dry during hot summers in a dark well ventilated area or in the oven and food dehydrator.
Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much I’ve been really wanting to get more into botany Aj’s love plant medicine and it’s something that I have wanted to go to school for and I actually have like a certification for but currently I’m trying to overcome some financial blocks and this video was just so helpful that way I can actually get started in my botany life I am into herbs currently I have basil rosemary and mint growing but this is just going to help my herbal life style really flourish so thank you again 🙏🏽
Just keep learning until you can attend school and you will accomplish a lot! You’re so welcome and thank you for watching! Misilla

very helpful , thanks you
I'm glad you found this helpful! Thanks for watching! Misilla
Thank you for the information. How can I use the dried herbs?? I am new to this and have no idea!
You're welcome April! I use them for cooking. Oregano, parsley, rosemary, sage have so many uses in the kitchen! Thanks for watching!
Microwave ???, no,no,no, you are radiating the herbs .
I've only used the microwave once and learned it radiates the herbs or any food which takes away all the nutrients. I hang dry or use a food dehydrator for high moisture herbs. Thank you.
I won’t be able to sleep tonight after that scare ;)
ha ha thanks for watching!
Most beautiful zombie I've ever seen.
Thanks for the video! This really was helpful! Is basil the only herb that should be dried using a microwave, dryer, etc? Thanks! We have tons of herbs this year!
You're welcome. I've only used the microwave once and it radiates the herbs or any food which takes away all the nutrients. I hang dry or yes use a food dehydrator for high moisture herbs. Glad to hear you're growing your own and hope you get a bountiful harvest! Misilla
Thanks for your video! This was very helpful! Is basil the only herb that contains moisture which isn't good for natural drying? We have lots of herbs this year so definitely going to do this!
I'm glad you found this helpful! Any of the mint family which includes Lemon Balm are high moisture herbs. If you're climate has low humiduty or dry air you can still hang dry them or use a food dehydrator.
Thanks for watching! Misilla
How long do the herbs last in a seal container? And can you freeze them or put them in the refrigerator?
+Patti Hall Hi Patti,
I store them in an air tight container away from light and in the basement. Somewhere it does not get too hot. You don't need to refrigerate them unless you freeze them fresh. Our homegrown dried herbs retain their aroma between 12 to 24 months depending on the herbs. Here's a video on how to freeze fresh herbs: ua-cam.com/video/AULuRKC0HBs/v-deo.html
Thanks for watching! Misilla
Hi..how do you collect seeds from sweet marjoram..thanks
And will you be able to explain to me how you edit your videos?
What dehydrator is recommended for drying herbs? How do I know how long and what temp?
Jared Maddox I have the Ronco brand. It comes with a booklet instruction that states temperature recommendations for drying various fruit , veggies and herbs. Thanks for watching !
Hi! I was wondering how do I follow you on Facebook because I can't find you
hello..can i hang my herbs in my garage..but it gets pretty hot..especially in summer..will that be ok
Definitely! They will dry quicker and it's good for them to not be exposed to light . Thank you for stopping by!
hi thanks for the video was very helpful!I do not have a dehydrator and like the idea of herbs been dried naturally. Please can you tell me if its possible to dry coriander? All the videos I have seen are all about putting coriander in the fridge but I would like to dry it if this is possible? PS kids always interrupt you at the most inconvienient times don't they lol thankyou shaz
+sharon x Hi Shaz, Glad you found this helpful. As for drying coriander seeds, make sure to harvest them when they are tan/brown, when they are dry. If there's still moisture left, you can place the seeds on pan in your oven at the lowest setting for 5 minutes, turn on your oven, then turn off and place the pan of seeds to remove excess moisture. Let it cool then store in a container with a tight fitting lid in a dark, dry and cool place. You can dry cilantro leaves in the oven as well in the lowest setting for 15-30 minutes, but check on them after 15 minutes to make sure they don't burn, store the same as you would with coriander seeds. Thanks for stopping by! Misilla
THANKYOU VERY MUCH VERY HELPFULL ;-)
+sharon x You're welcome Sharon! :)
I need your help :)
What part of the country do you live in? That accent reminds me of New Jersey but I might be wrong
wishtopublish definitely not New Jersey. I'm from New Jersey, and that's not what we sound like at all. That's just a stereotype
I'm from WA state, PNW, thanks.
NEVER Microwave
Anyone have a beginner video I wanted to get in to being a herbalist but haven't had much luck in finding a video

+JohnnyNewmoney81 Gotta love it! :) Thanks for watching!
Why does everyone pronounce it erbs!?
I think it has to do with French language influence in American English. We just like to pick and choose our pronunciation as we go I guess :)
my australian boyfriend says "herb" and my american self says "erb" it all depends on how you were taught, though my partner is also british and he says it might be a hangover from hating on the frenchies :P
Because the h is silent and it is a French word.
It's Herbs there is a H for a reason
Raymond Duke Unless the h is silent.
Spooky!
Erbs? HERBS HERBS HERBS madam...!
Pezzab5 The H is silent. You should have learned that in school.
Which school did you go to?
The h is silent.......
You are so beautiful 😍
Thank you so much
Are you married?
