Chris Columbus who directed a few Potter movies said,, after Alan died, that he didn’t want anyone to tell them where the gifts came from and let/make them think they were being given to them by the production company etc I did hear once Daniel Radcliffe say that Alan gave him the advice of: Never do something in film or theatre just because it’s what people expect of you, or assume you would jump at. Always pay attention to what is interesting, and never do a film just because it’s Oscar bait, or might win awards. Do it because it’s interesting, fun or maybe written/directed by a friend… I remember it quite clearly (may have got a few words wrong) but I remember it because in a general way, it’s good advice for life.

I feel so sorry for her. She is obviously still hurt and damaged and struggling from what her vicious parents did to her albeit years ago. I’m sure the hurt feels as fresh today as it did yesterday. Bless you Ruby, you survived.
it is easy to find Ruby Wax absolutely sane truly talented and consumingly endearing. Ruby Wax has to be one of the most likeable people ever to exist. Our paths crossed by chance about 33 years ago in Holland Park and I was truly still am very happy to have that delightful experience with me.
Dexter Fletcher has a similar story about Alan Rickman mentoring him when he was down and out. The man had a whole separate career as a damn therapist! RIP

I have heard her talk about her parents before and it is so tragic that the level of suffering that they went through ( and many like them) was directly turned on to their child as no therapy or counselling or possibly understanding was available so no help given. So so sad. However it takes courage, intelligence and therapy to completely turn it around and do what Ruby has and continues to do. Thank you for sharing.

Watching the program she mentioned (who fo you think you are) her relitives and ancestors who where institutionalised got the better care and treatment, lived better lives. my mother was JEALOUS that mosquitoes rarely bit me. i am one of the weird ones that isn't allergic to poison ivy, she was resentful. it seems to me you would want your children to have a better life, not suffer the same as you, great or small.

I know it's not all about me but I have been diagnosed recently at 49 with CPTSD ..my whole life has been a disastrous from the age of eleven I have been distracting myself constantly with various addictions I have tried to will myself better taking countless meds now I am living in a boarding house totally broke unemployed and this mental condition has got my emotions so extreme and interchangeable..I have tried to be "normal" so hard rehabs meetings church's shrinks but the awful unbearable sadness gets worse and worse if I can't distract myself with my addictions..of course I have to accept personal responsibility but I can't hack it too much longer ..does anyone have any insights how they carry on and move on from this ..Ruby seems an example that it can be done and I'm sure many people do..is it just a weakness of my character

Because people are misogynistic - women are not allowed to be young, not allowed to age, not allowed to be imperfect or human in any way. They must be pleasing to others at all times and live only for other's approval. That's why people feel it's perfectly fine to talk about such things. With a man they'd never give it a thought.
When i first saw Ruby Wax perform, i did not like her; her abrasiveness in her comedy was appalling to me. But over time, I have seen her segment on "Who Do You Think You Are?", and now this interview, and my opinion (which doesn't really matter to anyone but me) has shifted. Like most people, i have issues with my parents, as well as others from through out my life, but nothing as bad as what she describes. When she said, "My whole life has been an act of revenge.", it clicked with me. We are all give raw material to build a life out of; experiences and how we mentally process those events, and our lives can only be as good as the events and how we deal with them Ruby Wax has taken awfully circumstances and built something remarkable; it's not pretty, it is bitter and ragged, painful to behold, but it is strong and it has a beauty of its own; it's not the delicate orchid, it's the thistle, whose spike leaves and stem also bear a beautiful blossom.

That line of Ruby’s stood out to me too in my own life however my reaction these days is much less resolute and one tends to shrink into the background instead in search of a quiet life. It would’ve been so easy for her (or anyone in that situation) to do the same so I really admire that.

I, also, have a tendency to flee unpleasantness, instead seeking a quiet, calm life; but it seems that the world will not allow that to happen (unless one moves to remotest Alaska and the nearest neighbor is 200 miles away). Ruby Wax chose to stand up to the chaos inflicted upon her, but not all of us have her strength and courage. But, do we give up or do we continue on? It is a choice we each must make for ourselves. I live in an area of a large city that is not the worst, it has its share of homeless who have mental issues which they all too readily spew onto others. But, there are those moments of grace, though I get so caught up in my dramas that I lose sight of them. I wish there was a "one size fits all solution". But there is not. I am not a Buddhist, but I try to remember the alleged last words of the Buddha: " Let each work out their own salvation with diligence." In other words, life is the ultimate do it yourself project. I wish you joy in your journey.
Having had Austro-German parents and suffered the horrors Ruby did, the worst thing is that not only did it cause me two failed marriages because I’m always deemed as “too independent” (although no husband ever asked me WHY I’m that way!), it also left me socially excluded FOR LIFE with a mild speech impairment. So not only did my parents steal my childhood, the rest of society shuns me on a daily basis. I’ll be one of those people who dies at home alone and isn’t discovered for years. Thanks Mom & Dad!!
Its dam hard, but you can breath through. I moved to different Counties than my mother, only way i can breath. Days and weeks will go by, without even thinking about her. The Guilt button i use to wear now sits dis-guarded in the corner.
That were the cards you were handed - but not a life-sentence . Those people were not good at being human , you must pity them . Use your strengths to create things , preferably art, furniture, your housing. Invite people, make your own tribe of friends as your chosen family .....take pride in your self-sufficiency ,there are so many people out there that do not have your strengths, and who envy them
Ruby Wax was amazingly good at interviewing people. I remember watching her series and thinking she was quite possibly the very best there is at it. She had this way of making people so relaxed you got extraordinary insights into their lives you didn't expect to hear. All while simultaneously covering a lot of ground with that high-speed way of talking. Very funny and pertinent observations - but blink and you'd miss them. You have to keep up. A sparky talent!
She totally sells herself short I’ve always liked ruby wax she’s an incredible talent . She talks of others having talent that made her good but she performed the material at times and you have to be good to do that. Her shows where she followed people and talked to different people were brilliant because she didn’t play nicely with others .

The more I learn about her and her family the more my heart breaks for her and eonder at how she came out the other side such a whole and forgiving person.
Hearing about Ruby's dad, all I keep thinking is "PTSD". Her parents experienced the worst trauma, then passed a portion of it on to their offspring, and so the cycle continues. Looks like Ruby managed to break the cycle 🙏
You can't pass on PTSD though. It's something you have to directly experience. It will impact people around you though, but it's different for everyone.
But I’ve never heard about people with PTSD being so petty as her dad clearly was. Criticising her teeth for being too shiny. Sounds more like narcissism to me. And didn’t they flee in 1938, before the war started and concentration camps were opened? I’m not saying that having to live through what the nazis did pre war and losing your entire family isn’t awful, of course it is, but they didn’t go through the worst.
Often weak people inflict a bigger wound than they themselves experienced because in their minds they build up the negativity and are unaware of the impact of their own actions. It comes from the constant judgement of the self centred ego.
I always love listening to Ruby Wax but Amol Ragan is an excellent interviewer here. Very incisive. Makes for a really interesting exchange and gets behind Ruby's default make a joke of it response.
I always love to know more about Ruby Wax---she has depths that many interviewers don't get to. Speaking of, I also really enjoy this interviewer. Amol Ragan does a good job here emphasizing what's important and keeping the tone buoyant.

I love Ruby and I was a great fan of Alan’s too. I think she has overcome and is such an inspiration. I would have loved her as a good friend growing up. An extraordinary woman and an extraordinary life.
I've never had time for this abrasive unpleasant woman but after listening to this I have great respect. I too had prolonged childhood abuse and feel the saying 'don't get even get successful' works for me as my greatest success is that I'm still alive. I'm a positive wonderful human being who has no interest in being a victim tho I've spent time, effort and money over many years to get there.

A long time ago, I saw a documentary about Ruby. She visited her parents and they were really ghastly. They were not very welcoming at all to her, which you would think would be the opposite in front of the cameras. I felt embarrassed for her. They were not only ghastly, but they were weird too. They were sitting on sofas that still had the plastic covers on them that would have been there when they were delivered. It's such a shame as Ruby is one of the most talented all rounders I have ever seen. any other parents would have been proud of her. It's their loss.

Her husband Ed Bye sounds like a lovely gem of a husband, she worked with him in the 80's & apparently they fought like cat & dog & when he wasn't on set one day she asked "Where is Ed?" & realized how much she actually liked him. They married in 1988 & have 3 children.
I was locked out, and had many friends that were put out of their houses. I don't know about any other time, but it was an 80's thing in Baltimore, MD. It was real and not something any of us will forgive.

Ruby Wax was amazingly good at interviewing people. I remember watching her series and thinking she was quite possibly the very best there is at it. She had this way of making people so relaxed you got extraordinary insights into their lives you didn't expect to hear. All while simultaneously covering a lot of ground with that high-speed way of talking. Very funny and pertinent observations - but blink and you'd miss them. You have to keep up.

She totally sells herself short I’ve always liked ruby wax she’s an incredible talent . She talks of others having talent that made her good but she performed the material at times and you have to be good to do that. Her shows where she followed people and talked to different people were brilliant because she didn’t play nicely with others .

Lovely interview by Amol. I've always loved Ruby she was a real breathe of fresh air when I first saw her on TV when I was little. Didn't realise Rickman was her lifelong friend.

The more I learn about her and her family the more my heart breaks for her and eonder at how she came out the other side such a whole and forgiving person.
Hearing about Ruby's dad, all I keep thinking is "PTSD". Her parents experienced the worst trauma, then passed a portion of it on to their offspring, and so the cycle continues. Looks like Ruby managed to break the cycle 🙏
You can't pass on PTSD though. It's something you have to directly experience. It will impact people around you though, but it's different for everyone.

@@admi1191 Generational trauma is a thing, the effects of someones PTSD can be passed on and effect other people especially children.
But I’ve never heard about people with PTSD being so petty as her dad clearly was. Criticising her teeth for being too shiny. Sounds more like narcissism to me. And didn’t they flee in 1938, before the war started and concentration camps were opened? I’m not saying that having to live through what the nazis did pre war and losing your entire family isn’t awful, of course it is, but they didn’t go through the worst.
Often weak people inflict a bigger wound than they themselves experienced because in their minds they build up the negativity and are unaware of the impact of their own actions.
It comes from the constant judgement of the self centred ego.
I always love listening to Ruby Wax but Amol Ragan is an excellent interviewer here. Very incisive. Makes for a really interesting exchange and gets behind Ruby's default make a joke of it response.
I always love to know more about Ruby Wax---she has depths that many interviewers don't get to. Speaking of, I also really enjoy this interviewer. Amol Ragan does a good job here emphasizing what's important and keeping the tone buoyant.

Love Ruby, one of my all time favourites. When I compile my fantasy list of people I'd love to spend an evening down the pub with, Ruby is one of the few that is absolutely at the top of the list. Wonderful human being ❤️

@@ladosis5596 I would watch her documentary series again, and her celeb interviews. Ruby did a fair bit of sketch comedy too. She's one of those people that I've always adored for her candid unvarnished but tender honesty. A lovely human being ❤️

Just finished reading Ruby's "I'm not as well as I thought I was" - a really interesting read about dealing with mental illness. Hope that black dog leaves you alone for the rest of your natural Ruby.
I love Ruby and I was a great fan of Alan’s too. I think she has overcome and is such an inspiration. I would have loved her as a good friend growing up. An extraordinary woman and an extraordinary life.

I've never had time for this abrasive unpleasant woman but after listening to this I have great respect. I too had prolonged childhood abuse and feel the saying 'don't get even get successful' works for me as my greatest success is that I'm still alive. I'm a positive wonderful human being who has no interest in being a victim tho I've spent time, effort and money over many years to get there.

@@rora3875 she can certainly be abrasive and pushy. But she seems to deliberately amp that up because she’s surrounded by nonplussed British people! It’s a type of humour. So a bit like Mohammed Ali take it with a grain of salt. Not unpleasant though pretty high maintenance (I think. I’ve never met her so what do I know?)
I'm glad you have the time, effort, and money over many years to get where you are but maybe don't judge other people who never have your good fortune. I find this "I'm not a victim" stuff very unpleasant and abrasive, highly judgmental.
A long time ago, I saw a documentary about Ruby. She visited her parents and they were really ghastly. They were not very welcoming at all to her, which you would think would be the opposite in front of the cameras. I felt embarrassed for her. They were not only ghastly, but they were weird too. They were sitting on sofas that still had the plastic covers on them that would have been there when they were delivered. It's such a shame as Ruby is one of the most talented all rounders I have ever seen. any other parents would have been proud of her. It's their loss.

ruby wax was so good at celebrity interviews cos she had an ability to seem like she was blowing smoke up there arse which the celebrities obviously loved while it being obvious she wasn't and brought something different out in them
AR remains a legend. Great man. Love Ruby since 'Girls on top' comedy series.
Her bbc series were brilliant one of the few shows when younger whole family sat round tv to watch

I was born and raised in Ruby's neighbourhood. 'Wax' is a common Jewish name. I never knew it was originally 'Wachs' until I learned it from Ruby. ❤
@@PeoplePlacesRocknRoll I read her autobiography & she made me laugh so much. Tragedy & comedy in equal measure. Her husband Ed Bye sounds like a lovely gem of a husband, she worked with him in the 80's & apparently they fought like cat & dog & when he wasn't on set one day she asked "Where is Ed?" & realized how much she actually liked him. They married in 1988 & have 3 children.

Bleeping out 'rude' words always amuses me because it intensely highlights that they've just been said, and we all know exactly what the word is despite the suppression whereas, had it not been bleeped, the vast majority of us would have just taken it in context and moved on without particularly dwelling on it.
