Thanks for your question! Linguistics is a whole field on its own, and there are topics and complexity we couldn't get to. We could spend a whole course on linguistics (in fact Crash Course did! ua-cam.com/play/PL8dPuuaLjXtP5mp25nStsuDzk2blncJDW.html) For an intro communication course, we and our advisors at ASU had to decide what's essential for /communication/ students to know. We talk about some of the mechanics - like syntax and grammar - but left out morphology in part because it's quite technical (and even philosophical!).
