  • Rare MIdnight Oil live performance - Stand In Line. Recorded at The Last Double Jay Concert, Parramatta Park. Concert in 1980 celebrated the change from Double- Jay-AM to Triple Jay-FM This is the original live-to-air stereo mix using ABC mobile van - the old Neve mixer, connected via land-line back to Triple Jay studio. Enjoy!

    This is a gift. I was 17 years old when I saw this show -- 54 now. And I am seeing them in NYC, May 13, 2017!

    Amazing bass from Peter Gifford. They weren't the same without it.

    Midnight Oil, one of the most underrated bands of all time!

  • @gabriel222
    @gabriel222 10 років тому +25

    You can hear why they got Peter Gifford in this band!T he definitive version of the song right here. After he left the oils became melodic and evolved etc. but to me the period 78-85 was their very best.

    • @abelashes2676
      @abelashes2676 6 років тому

      Gifford wasn't in the band when they made the first two albums. That was Andrew James. James played on the studio version of this song on Head Injuries and arranged the bass line with input from the guitarists.

      Yep true.

      Nevertheless it is an amazing performance. I was lucky enough to see Andrew James a few times and he was great to watch. I love the bass on the first two albums.

    That is quite possibly the filthiest guitar solo ever. Moginie's guitar sound from back then is like no other. It's hard to put into words just how bloody good they were back then. The energy of their performance is like sticking your finger in a light socket

    • @mwhearn1
      @mwhearn1 4 роки тому +3

      When I first heard Pearl Jam, I thought they had copied their guitar sound from the Oils. Only band I think that came close.
      This song has so much drive. It's just crazy. I'm exhausted just listening to it.
      Also it's a very clean mix for a live recording.

      @@NUDEBOMBER Oils on the water, stand in line, they kill it in that, and Jimmy is the genius of this band!

    • @abelashes2676

      It is ferocious. To me its main competition for filthiest guitar solo would be something from The Drones on The Miller's Daughter or The City.

    Peter Gifford sounds amazing! Even though they're not his Bass lines, he made sure (as usual) that they really stood out in this live recording.

    Got to see & hear "Stand in Line" played live for the last time in SA - at the AEC in late March 2022. I was in the second row from the front. I felt 19 again... instead of 61 going on 62. I thrashed this version on my old stereo as it was the B-side to the "Armistice Day" 12-inch single. Just the fn best 😀

    So much of even our pretty recent cultural history has been lost. Thank you, Keith for being such a pro and having kept these "relics" around for as long as you have. Even via the Interwebs, the analogue phatness (as the young people would say) is evident.

    I just worked camera at WOMAD in Adelaide, Australia last weekend. The Oils performed there. Such a trip down memory lane for me. I couldn't believe that they actually dropped 'Stand In Line' off the set list the day before the gig. Arrgghhh!!!

    Yes Ken, Band would have listened a few years back.. I've had the quarter inch 15ips version for years.. Thought I should do something so others could hear it. I'll put up a higher res version soon - higher bit rate and HD Pics. Present version on UA-cam is AAC 160Kbs - thats pretty good!

    The concert Date was January 18th 1981
    Not 1980
    I was there at 15 years of age
    Was a stinking hot day
    Midnight oil headed the line up of what was billed the 2jj last concert Parramatta Park
    The other bands that played before midnight oil were
    Mondo Rock ,Radiators,Matt Finish,Moving Pictures ,Machinations
    The smell of pot filled the air,girls walking around in bikinis ,a beer in everyone’s hand
    And all those bands for
    free !
    Ahhh the memories
    Will never forget …
    When Australia was !

    Thank you - wished I had more. I recorded the the gig for Triple Jay in 1980. The concert in Parramatta Park, was celebrating the change from AM to FM. Another great set from the gig was Ross Wilson/Mondo Rock - wished I had a copy. ABC Radio should have it in their archives somewhere.
