    Had the pleasure of flying on a trip with Captain Sully (as a flight attendant). He truly was a very kind man and a true professional. His “Pre-Flight Briefings” with us were very thorough. When I found out he was the Captain of that flight I understood completely the success of that ditching. 👏👍🙏❤️

    • @nightmareflame101
      @nightmareflame101 3 роки тому +49

      @@Alb410 Maybe. But not everything was their fault. 1.) At the time of the accident Canada changed their metric system from pounds (feet, etc.) to kilograms (m, cm, etc.). Flight 143 was one of the first, maybe even the first plane to receive fuel in kilograms instead of pounds. And that's where the first error happened. Instead of x kg of fuel, it got x pounds of fuel and since pound is around half of kilogram, they only got half of the fuel they needed. 2) Second error happened in the software of the plane. A plastic was covering one of the components on the motherboard that was suppose to tell the pilots that they don't have enough fuel, but since it was covered and wasn't working properly, it didn't. Yes, the pilots checked the papers with the fuel to make sure it's ok, but on paper it was! They had no idea that they only had half of the fuel.
      Still, praise to the captain for bringing the plane back to ground safely.

    • @billyb4613
      @billyb4613 3 роки тому +2

      First of all your grammar is atrocious to the point that I'm not even sure what you're asking. If you're suggesting the FAA should manufacture cameras, that's not their role in aviation, they're regulators. If you're suggesting they require or otherwise mandate them to be used, that answer is simple: cost-benefit. Same reason they don't require parachutes to be installed on commercial airplanes so if they get into an emergency they can just blow the chutes and have the fuselage float to the ground. It would be incredibly expensive to install on or retrofit all the commercial airplanes licensed to fly in the US, considering their scope of usefulness is extremely narrow. The likelihood of an incident occurring that a camera (or ballistic parachute system, for that matter) would be useful in any way is infinitesimally small. Even then, what good is it? In the case of NWA85 for example, all it would do is tell them there was a rudder hardover. It doesn't make it any easier for them to land the plane, and that's all that matters. So you might be dumbfounded "why FAA do not make exterior body cameras on the aircraft's", but I'm dumbfounded you didn't bother to consider how expensive and incredibly useless that would really be.
      Hope this helps.

      They would very seldom be useful. First, there has to be visible damage or unexpected configuration. Then the pilots must see the damage - often there simply isn't the time to look at video images of your plane. Then the damage must be of a nature such that knowing of it informs the pilots of a suitable alternative action. There have probably been incidents/accidents which fulfill all these criteria, but I can't think of any offhand. One of the closest is American Airlines flight 191. Had the pilots known their slats had retracted on one wing but not the other, they could have saved the plane by prioritizing airspeed over altitude. However, they were at too low altitude to be able to spend so much time diagnosing their problem, even if they had had cameras.
      In this list, there is NW 85, with the rudder hard over. I'm not sure if it they'd have done anything different had they known the cause of their problems - can a pilot comment on this?

      @@fluffy-fluffy5996 A320s have a so called 'ditching button' on the overhead panel which basically waterproofs the aircraft by shutting of points where water could enter. In this specific incident, the button was not pressed, so the aircraft filled up with water. The reason they didn't push it is probably because it's way down in the QRH. The checklist Skiles was reading was designed to be used in case of all engine failure at a much higher altiude, so the button was to the end of the list. They were on the river long before completing the checklist items...

    • @steveokneivo1
      @steveokneivo1 3 роки тому +13

      At the tail end of the airplane there is a small rectangular door about 1 foot in size. It's for regulating pressure inside the aircraft and it's always open in flight and even when it's closed it's not air or water tight it's just one of the many places that water could get into the airplane. One of the passengers did not try and open the doors at the back of the plane, otherwise the plane would have quickly sank a lot faster. another reason why it floated so well is because the wings are full of fuel just after takeoff, and fuel is lighter than water and floats. I'm an aircraft mechanic for a major airline, these are all common knowledge in my industry.

    • @TrainerAQ
      @TrainerAQ 3 роки тому +4

      That's the kinda thing that is expected. As a pilot we also expect them to open the overwing exit on an emergency landing even if the plane landed perfectly and it's actually safer to stay in the plane and wait for the stairs to be connected. People do crazy things when they panic.
      Just remember if you evacuate and we didn't issue the order for it, the plane may not be configured for it, i.e. the engines may still be running, the plane may still be pressurized, the flight control surfaces may still be moving, the flaps may not be down for you to slide off the wings, and fire trucks may be racing around outside not expecting you cause the pilots told them everything is ok.
      So be a smart passenger, brief yourself before the flight, stay calm, take a moment to think about what is going on and don't just go impulsive Rambo all of a sudden, listen and watch your flight attendants, think about what your next step is and when you are going to it, and if it does come down to evacuate, leave your bags behind please.
