Chelsea fan here - happy Gusto got away with it, but based on other red cards given this season, it's a definite red. Realistically I think it should only be a yellow for being reckless, but the most important thing about refereeing is consistency so it should have been a red

Football and rivalries aside, this has been one of the worst officiated seasons in any league across the world. The profile the Premier League holds and likes to claim is the best in the world is showing itself up. Miss those days of the big hitters letting the other teams know they are in for a tough game. Might as well become the NBA at this point.

You are absolutely right about Man City and they are the worst offenders but other players at other clubs get away with it. Last Sunday in the FA Cup between Arsenal and Liverpool, Odegaard several times showed dissent, threw his arms about, screamed at the ref, told him to f-off but no card. 3 times before 70th min he did it. No card. Harvey Elliott does it once and not at the level of Odegaard and he gets booked for dissent. 15 mins later Odegaard does it again. The commentator who ignored the other times then said Odegaard probably didn’t show enough dissent then to be booked. Ridiculous. Bias commentary which is just as bad as the punditry. We all know pundits get paid to spout nonsense and they can’t upset their sponsors and they don’t want to upset their mates. We see it with Carragher. He has a go at Richarlison when he goes down far too easy but other players do it and he stays quiet. All that said, as you are a Man Utd fan, you can’t complain about players not being booked for dissent because Bruno Fernandes would be sent off in every single game if the refs were consistent with dissent bookings. He is the worst offender in the league and gets away with it almost every game.

There's some incongruence there. You claim Man City are the best and most consistent, when they haven't been in the first half of the season. You then go on to talk about them (via Guardiola) trying so often to influence the referee (as Ferguson's and Wenger's teams did repeatedly for years).

    • @DenDave_

@@MaxFoster-c4k I can see the argument for that, but i disagree. Having this kind of consistency doesnt remove the problem, it just shifts the debate from inconsistency to continous bad decisions every week.
This is why i so badly want a panel of former professional players informing the VAR, or a former player part of the VAR room even. These refs look at situations by the book, but they dont have a bloody clue about the flow of the game or how players move their bodies and such. A former player giving their input would almost certainly remove these red cards for Jones and Bissouma and such, where they make a completely fair and legitimate challange but are just unlucky in the outcome.

Mark is wrong. Not only that, he has criticised previous red cards for similar challenges but now decides that pundits who take his former view are lazy. The ‘rules’ are simple. It’s a foul if the ref deems it a foul. It’s a yellow if the ref deems it a yellow. It’s red if the ref deems it a red. No two fouls are identical. That’s why refs are afforded discretion. Mark can have an opinion. But it’s mystifying that he doesn’t welcome the decision not to give a red. Maybe if it was Casemiro he would do.
