THE 80 SERIES GETS A FRESHLY BUILT 1HD-T POWERHOUSE!

- [Edit] A short time after installing this engine, the harmonic balancer bolt came loose due to not being torqued to spec. Stuffed the balancer, seal and timing gears and obviously threw the belts off and overheated the engine.
Vehicle was sent back up to Qld for Grant to rectify under warranty.
After this, the first trip away the engine was pushing coolant (leaking head gasket)
The vehicle was then sent back to Qld AGAIN to "rectify" the head gasket issue and Brett opted to add ARP head studs at the same time. The headgasket was still leaking after all of this "rectification" work.
Grant then wiped his hands of the job and left Brett with an virtually useless engine and vehicle not to mention thousands on thousands of dollars of wasted money 😡
And we have found many other customers who have had similar experiences to Brett since these issues...
Brett has since found a (hopefully) decent diesel mechanic locally, to fully rebuild the engine AGAIN and so far so good...
After a few months off the road, Brett's HDJ80 is back up and running AND BETTER THAN EVER. Engine run-down, install, first start and first drive all in the one feature length video - so enjoy!
This engine was built by Grant from Accelerated Diesel Tuning, on the Gold Coast, QLD.
Basic rundown:
-Factory 1hdt block and 12v head (all acid washed, cleaned, honed etc etc)
-Factory crank
-Factory cam
-Factory rods
-Factory later model pistons (shallower combustion bowl - less chance of cracking)
-ACL race bearings
-All new bearings, gaskets, seals, plugs, belts etc etc
-MTQ built fuel pump (tuned for 20psi)
-Munro Performance billet, high flowed ct26 turbo
-NPC HD upgraded clutch
-PDI FMIC kit & 1fz airbox lid
+Lots more!

Cool in depth video, cheers for taking the time to document it
No problem, glad you enjoyed it mate👌
Nice job fellas. And to the builder. Hats off
Good work lads. Great vid as usual
Enjoyed it, thanksfor the vid.
I am just about to installa 1HD-FT into my 105 Cruiser..
Thanks for the insite, there is SFA regarding theseengines, go great...
Loved that time lapse 👍
Nice to see a win happening for your mate
fantastic video and job well done gents.
Thanks mate!
been happy with my NPC clutch really good service and help there too.
That’s awesome boi. I’m about to start my 12ht rebuild hope mine goes the same way as your
I replaced a head gasket on an 80 series with the same 1hd-t, I believe it had 4 or 5 cracked piston similar to those, old boy didn't want to replace them for some reason so I slapped it back together, still tows his boat around 2 years later no issues haha
Nice Lights Bret !
Yeah the 80 love it
Iv got a 1990 model 1hdt love it
Great video! Just put an new 1hz in my 105, and about to put a kinugawa td05-20g bb turbo before I get it tuned. I have that PDI front mount kit as well works great but was a bitch to install! Noticed you boys test driving in my neck of the woods too🤘🏼 keep the vids coming man!!!
How was the kinugawa? Still running good?
Great video mates!
Just wondering if you had to tilt the gearbox to get the engine back in? I might need to pull out my 1hdt soon out of my 80 series and looking at the engine mounts the engine needs to be raised a tad before I can move it forward?
Thank you for your video upload very imformative, may i ask where did you order or purchase the turbo intercooler pipes and intake cover? I was able to purchase a aluminum front mounted turbo intercooler from LAZADA with a specs of 600x300x75... but the kit and pipes were not available... hope you could help me out... Thank you and Best Regards!
thank good job
Good to check your crank bearings every 80K kms by pulling the oil pan. Seen so many HDt's having issues with the main bearings even with religious maintenance.
Mains ? Or conrod bearings main bearings are not a very common to fail in the 1hdts 1hzs
lol im not the only one stepping on the bars and flares to work on the 80
Awesome 1hdt
It's so cool!! ilovenit :)
How do you like that turbo? Not much feed back on them it seems. Although Munro seems to be a great turbo builder
Awesome video as always lads, would absolutely love to see a 1kz surf get played with on the channel. Loved my 2.4 but just picked up a 94 1kzte surf. Would love your opinion on some good mods too start with. Stock standard on 265’s and a catch can. Cheers 🤘🏼
Downpipe first
Intercooler
Boost to 12psi with a tap
Most people leave it at that but you can turn them up a lot more. Just with the head cracking risk it's a bit sketchy
Well I've got a bit of Ben's Prado 120 1kz but you should head over to his channel - Bengineered. He shows you how to properly tune and up the power etc. Don't go the typical route everyone does with a mech pump. These engines are very happy with a good unichip piggyback and tune. But a proper tune, not someone who just looks at soot and post turbo EGTs which are inaccurate as.
But generally you want at least a 3in down pipe and min 2.5 main exhaust, 3in all the way even better, a good breathing intake and ideally get rid of the tmic and go a fmic if possible or if you're skilled enough route a w2a like I've done on my surf. But a2a fmic is by far the most efficient in my experience.
Also good instrumentation like pre turbo EGTs, iat, and even wideband afr go a long way for tuning and engine longevity
Keep an eye on the IATs, it’s very easy to see over 110degC after the intercooler if it can’t keep up. That’s probably one of the contributors to cracked heads...
@@ReubenHorner fuel cuts out when boosting over 14 psi
@@brocksinclair66 starts pulling fuel at 13. 14 is cut sure but you're already way less fuel by then
I just put a rebuilt 1HDT in my 80 too, how many KMs did it take bed in your rings??
Tell ya mate not to rest his foot on the clutch pedal hahaha
Hey guys, did you bleed the injector lines up before you went for initial start ? Couldn’t quite see, but always helps get that quick start.
Great work fellas it looks amazing with the detail to cleanliness too !!
Cool video, what is the bull bar on the 80?
We don't know exactly what it is. Just something generic
Hey boys! Awesome video thanks so much.
I'm going to pull my 1hdt out soon to have it rebuilt. Just wondering if you needed to support the bellhousing while the engine is out or does it just rest on the sway bar? I really want to avoid removing the transmission because they are the biggest c#*% to get back in as you may know.
Cheers boys!
I'll probably have a few more questions for you in the coming months!🦧
I think we just blocked it up off the sway bar from memory. Yeah I always try avoid removing the trans. The two top bellhousing bolts are a prick so be warned and have plenty of socket extensions lol
@@boostedbuiltgarage Cool thought so! That will save tonnes of time. I had to buy 750mm worth of extensions to change the tranny a few months back 😅 was a headache of a job. Those gearboxes are so heavy and unbalanced with the transfer hanging off the side.
How's the rebuild going now? Still haven't decided who to send the motor to.
Hey guys was your egt sensor pre or post turbo?
Keep gion
The song @ 15:30? Dude got me fired up - went and mowed my lawn - what’s it called!!??
Haha it's a good one. It's called cold rise, it's one of the royalty free tracks in the UA-cam audio collection.
I hope you finished the video before mowing your lawn?!😂
Yeh man haha
Wahoo 80 series
What song start at 14:46?
Shit ya boys!
How much did it cost to rebuild
You have three gauges there. One for EGT, one for boost, what is the third one for?
Intake air temps at the manifold
What front mount intercooler are you running?
It's the whole PDI front mount kit as mentioned in the video...
How do you find the turbo was looking at one for my 1hdft and what do you think crack the piston to much fuel or shit injeter ?
The Munro turbos are good, same with Gturbo I think, MMP have a bad rep from what I've seen.
Would of been a fuel system issue, most likely an injector. Definitely not running too much fuel as it was still stock pump and pump fuel adjustment.
Hey I was wondering how much all of this cost you because iam doing the exact same to my 80 series and heard a lot of rough ideas on prices and quotes but want to hear from someone who has already done all of it
Look to spend between 10-15k depending how far you're going
What is the boost figure you finally went with..
Once it goes on the dyno I think Brett will be aiming for around 22-24psi boost
I love it how people believe they know more then the manifacture
Hi there Great truck! Can you tell me how to contact Grant Mills my cruiser is just about ready for an engine rebuild.
facebook.com/QLDdieseltuning/
Just went through the exact same thing! Curious at what rpm you're hitting 10psi of boost.
Boost isn't really rpm based, it's all all about engine load. You'll hit a certain boost alot faster in say 4th gear than you would 1st or 2nd so it's hard to say
@@boostedbuiltgarage I realise that. Load => exhaust gas => boost. I have pretty much the exact same setup, 0km build. 15psi gate on a Munro and ive seen it spike to 19psi in 4th up a hill. 580° pre turbo egt.
@@CharlesKolosko is your gauge actuate?
What size is the exhaust and dump pipe?
I haven't seen mine over 15psi even on 4th gear blasts up the hills. Egts similar to you
@@ciggie. 99% of the time it peaks at 15. But at max load I've seen it get to 19. I'm using a new justraceparts digital gauge. A custom whistle and soot manifold with 40mm ID runner. Highflow Munro ct26, 4"dump into 3" straight through exhaust.
@@CharlesKolosko almost identical setup to mine. I'll keep an eye on the gauge and see if it spikes. What's your intake setup?
What gearbox are you running?
The 5 speed manual that comes behind the 1hdt
How much was it to get your motor recond?
For what Brett did, with clutch and fluids and other bits like gaskets etc etc looking close to 12-14k I think from memory.
lol pulls handbrake on at the end, all cruiser owners know they don't work haha.
😂Haha generally yes. Bretts' works pretty decently actually
How much did you roughly spend on the engine rebuilt if I may ask?
Won't get much change from 15k with all fluids etc too. Obviously the cracked head added another couple of grand to the equation though
That's for machine work, rebuild kit, brand new head, new clutch, new radiator, the builders labour, shipping too and from Qld, fuel pump rebuilt, new injectors, a bunch of new OEM hoses and gaskets. The list goes on and on really, the way I saw it was to do it all once properly and not cut any corners on the build
@@boostedbuiltgarage I have a 1hz 400k on the clock, runs amazingly good but slow as you can imagine. I am between turbo it which we know it is not the best option for 1hz, or same money and maybe bu a 1hdt in the future. Hard decision aye. lol I hope my engine will last another 200k lol
@@Resignandreset if youre going to engine swap it, id go the extra step and drop an ft or fte in it. A younger engine and more potential power

Perhaps I missed it, but there was a shot of a crack in the head--how did you address it?
Brand new head
Hello
Can someone give me some help please. I might get an 80 series but I need to find more information on it. First question : at what km should I stear clear of. Second are the automatic transmission good in them. Thrid question: what is the best engine for them and how reliable is it. Fourth question: is it worth it am I going to be pouring money into it to keep it going?
It's not so much KMs based, it's service history, how it's been treated/looked after, quality/quantity of modifications etc etc.
The autos go alright, you can upgrade them too for a price, they're more forgiving on rough driving and easier to 4x4 as you can really crawl them and not worry about a clutch
And it's hard to say it's worth it, find a good one and you'll probably never have to spend too much, obviously there are maintenance costs being a 1990s era 4x4. The more you can do your self the less you'll spend
@@ciggie. thanks mate
