I had the same model in a 93, same colour etc for a few years. Best car I ever had, still regret selling it.
That said the early 1HD-Ts 90-93 had big problems with big end bearings.
At 365,000 kms your on the verge of big end bearings letting go.
You basically should change them out about every 100,000 kms.
The early ones required a “Jap Spec” oil that had 3500ppm calcium in the oil add pack which cushioned the big end bearings, which really weren’t up to snuff from the factory.
The good news is the motor doesn’t have to come out to change them.
You can loosen off the engine mounts - Jack the motor up in the engine bay, drop the sump and swap out the big ends bearings, new con rod cap bolts & torque it all back up and your good to go for another 100-200 thousand kms.
It’s a bit of work but not expensive.
Toyota used to do this on the 80’s back in the day even after they were out of warranty, as long as you covered cost of parts they would do the Labor for free.
They used upgraded bearings that came standard in the 1994 onwards that were harder faced and didn’t pit & shed their face material.
The reason they sh!t themselves now in older 1Hd-ts like yours is, you can’t buy “jap spec” oil anymore with 3500ppm calcium in the add pack.
The oils are all reformulated nowadays a HD they don’t use calcium in big numbers like those engines need, the
Y have found something cheaper that replaces the calcium and works fine in most turbo diesels but it doesn’t in those early 80’s, it phuks them quick smart.
I sold mine to my lad, he drove it a few years until it had similar kms to yours and being one not to listen to his old man he didn’t change big end bearings, and he bought the cheapest diesel oil he could find to do oil changes.
And it spun a big end bearing!
He had no $ to fix it so sold it as was for $4k
I spent more than $4k on it just before he bought it off me with a long ranger tank, lifted suspension and diesel gas Australia LPG addition so it could run on both diesel & lpg at the same time.
It was putting out around 170hp at the wheels with the lpg switched on, according to the dyno.
So because you can no longer buy the correct oil for the old 80’s 1HD-Ts and because they are known for bad big ends bearings, that usually sh!t the bed around 350,000kms, you’d be nuts not to swap out the big end bearings with the updated ones, because with the crap oil now including these synthetics, those old bearing caps won’t stand a chance of lasting much longer.

speaking from experience. replace the harmonic balancer(if orginal), belts, thermostat, cooling hoses, water pump and radiator. Also check alternator bearings and check if big end bearings have been done. This is everything i had issues with my 1992 hdj80 over the past years. Bought it from the original owner and he had it sitting in the shed for a while. lots of rubber components were rotted.

I just picked up a 97 LX450 over here in the US. Had 196k miles on the clock and zero dents. Picked it up at an auction for $9k. prior to that I was only able to find people selling it for as low as 15k and as high as 45k. I thought I paid alot for a 25 year old truck but quality multiplied by exclusivity is freaking commanding these insane prices. As long as resale is there it's a win win.

That's a bargain in the current climate, anything less than $15,000 with little or no work is good value. We paid less than $8,000 for our HDJ80 pre COVID, had a few things to do but still came out in front.

About a year and something ago I bought my dream 80 92 1hdt so bigger bores was offered for 7500 to me unregistered and no roady but then offered 9k for rego and roady and that’s meeting them almost halfway so drove around 4-6 hours roughly and had already paid so was bought sight unseen but although exterior wise it looks much better it does have 850 on the clock now but always planned to rebuild it so was never a worry to me. Shortly she’ll have a fresh engine and everything else was well maintained by a mechanic from the last owner so only minor things I need to fix from me. Absolutely brilliant 4wds and engines, tip is to get it professionally tuned with a top mount intercooler if you don’t plan to make a lot of power as to much fuel is the killer for these engines.

Good deal. Bought an ‘05 Prado last June for 15k. Dual battery, bar and winch. Just added drawers, roof rack and fridge and did the high country over New Years. Thought I got a pretty good deal on it. Now I’m seeing similar in the car yards and they’re asking 30k for them.
Keep up the good work, but one criticism. Don’t exaggerate how tough the tracks are. Stopped watching Shauno and Graham because they make everything out to be more difficult that it should be. Well, that and the product endorsements.

I am absolutely kicking my self man. about 5 days ago a saw a 1996 GQ Patrol grandpa spec for 6k. it also only had 250k km on the clock. Considering the current market thats about 10k below the cheapest i can find that has 470k km on the clock. I wasn't balls enough to ask my parents and it went withing 12 hours of being up which im not surprised about. I found the add half an hour after it was put up and honestly im really p*ssed at my self for not showing dad. For context I am still a child in the eyes of the law but I was going to pay most and leave my self a few grand for fuel and spares to fix stuff if something was wrong and also spare change for life hoping parents would loan me 1k.

I have just bought a 2018 Prado GLX with 27,000km. Obviously cost heaps more than your vehicle but I am well older than you. To put things in perspective. A bull bar fitted cost me early $3k and a tow bar $1k. You already have those mods. At your age, fixing it and seeing your results is half the fun. And for the rest of your days you will be a pretty good amateur mechanic. Enjoy.

$11k is actually a good price for a running 1HD-T LC80. Look after it well and do tasteful mods and you'll probably find, it'll appreciate in value. But be prepared to frequently adjust the handbrake. It and the OEM brakes are a well known Achilles heel of the LC80. You'll notice it more as you start loading up your rig. I have a 1996 GXL, and it came with 4-wheel disc brakes. But even this setup is not up to the job when it's loaded. So I fitted direct replacement (ie. no mod necessary) upgraded disc rotors from dba (NOTE: I'm not sponsored nor do I work for dba), and it's amazing the noticeable improvements in my braking power. I highly recommend upgrading your brakes as soon as you can afford to. There is also a rear wheel disc rotor conversion kit available for your LC80. Also keep an eye on the brake proportioning valve. Make sure it's not leaking. If it is, I highly recommend replacing it.

The gearbox then the rear diff couldn’t keep up
Not to mention my 17k spending become 30 plus easy

Don’t feel embarrassed. That’s a pretty good price for one of these things. You did good.

Current day n all, 11k is an awesome price for what you got.
Mate, when I bought my 1st car my old man laughed. "That's almost what that bloody thing was worth new"!! Haha. I'd bought a 20 year old Hz sandman panel van for 6k. They were somewhere in the range of 10k new when they came out. I didn't care. It's what I really had my heart set on and what they were worth. Its prob worth 50k now in good nick?
Regardless man, ya gotta follow your heart sometimes and leave what other call "sensible" decisions aside. That's the only way to earn your own happiness. Bla bla bla haha. Luv ya work and grats on a sweet 4by and it's potential. Cant wait to see what you do with the old girl 🤙

Nah, that's a great price... Especially where the used car/4wd market is currently at. There are some insane priced being asked for 80 series and other makes latley, you would have to be crazy to pay these inflated prices... It will cool off eventually.... But your rig as it stood at sale time was a good deal hey !!! Well done on getting the rig fixed for RWC. Will be watching your future mods. Nice truck.👍

That is definitely a good buy. It is honestly worse here in the West with regards to prices, and we don't have roadwothys on car transfers. Not sure if that is a good thing?
