    Beautiful bike-I have always wanted a square barrel rigid Triumph-bought a 1949 TR5 Trophy yesterday!

    The original Grand Prix (and Trophy) engines had parallel exhaust ports because the only alloy top end available was originally designed for an "industrial" engine used in RAF auxiliary generator sets during World War 2. The engines were fan-cooled and shrouded. The parallel exhaust pipes saved space and the alloy head and barrel saved weight, both important considerations on an aircraft. You can see the blank bosses on the barrels, used to attach the sheet metal shroud, in the photograph of the 1947 bike in the video. IIRC, the first GP/Trophy engines used surplus "generator engine" parts, and those bosses were drilled and tapped. Later engines used new castings from the same pattern, but, obviously, it wasn't necessary to drill and tap the bosses.

    Such a beautiful race machine. I had a Grand Prix square barrel motor, very rare. I also restored a '50 Thunderbird, I miss it dearly.

      I think I had one of these back in the 60s it was sold to me as a racing T100. It had cast iron head and barrel, oil tank on the RHS, sprung hub etc. I would like to send you a picture but not sure how to do this Cheers Chris Toms NZ

    Don't forget, that all MOTO 2 engines are Triumph 765cc units. That's a whole Grand Prix class powered by Triumph.

    Don't know why they don't make modern bikes look and sound like that anymore.

    Thank you for a very interesting video. Looks like no rear suspension other than the springs under the seat. If I was to ride that bike I'd be scared to death my toes would be chewed up by the primary chain.

    • @rickmancr
      @rickmancr 2 роки тому +1

      The suspension, such as it is, is inside the rear hub. The indicator that it's a sprung hub is that the spindle isn't in the centre of the hub. Not one of Edward Turner's best ideas. :-)

    Why do rev counters on these old bikes always move in that way rather than smoothly?

    • @rickmancr
      @rickmancr 2 роки тому +3

      It's a "chronometric" mechanism. Later rev counters and speedos are "magnetic".

    What’s with the tape on the spokes…..

    • @rickmancr
      @rickmancr 2 роки тому +1

      Probably covering lead solder wrapped around the spokes to balance the wheel.

    Got me buggered why they rev em out if it's gunnu idle.
    Sound's nice tho dunit.

    • @rickmancr
      @rickmancr 2 роки тому +2

      No choke, so no idle until it's warm. The later Amal GP racing carburettor doesn't even have a throttle stop to set the idle with.
