I've said it before, and I'll say it again "Ten" is one of the greatest debuts of all time, especially during the era. So many timeless songs on one record. Great video Rick
That's probably because it's not a typical debut record - they were already seasoned musicians by the time they formed the band. It is without doubt a great, great record though.
When I first listened "Ten", i thought, i listened a "Pearl Jam Greatest Hits - 10 best songs" album or something like that, then I realized, it is just one album lel
I'm 46 and 90's were amazing. Mother Love Bone, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains (Layne Staley), Mad Season, Temple of the Dog, RHCP, Jane's Addiction, RATM, Infectious Grooves, Kyuss (QOTSA), Tool, Screaming Trees... just WOW!
@@dotslashsatan I agree, bro. I could have mention many other great musicians but this is just a reminder that nothing compares to the 90's music variety. Most of us here have spent the best years of our lives blessed with the music of 90's.
Me and my then girlfriend bought Ten on cassette. In 3 weeks we had to buy another because we had totally worn out the first one. Every song, every chord, every beat, every word...pure magic.
My friend Eddie's in a band just signed by Epic. Third band on a tour usually doesn't mean much, but as the tour rolled on I noticed kids coming out earlier. By the end of the tour Pearl Jam was the biggest band on the planet. from the RHCP book
What Makes This Song Great is the greatest thing ever on UA-cam. It's not just about understanding songs you like, but also finding wonderful songs you have not heard. On a side note, I lost my job a week ago, and now I've gotta move back home - 1500 kms away from the girl and the city I love - and I found this song tonight, thanks to Rick. It made me cry, but I feel empowered at the same time. Shout out to everyone who has had set-backs and stayed true to their path.
Sorry to hear about you losing your job. Great music like this keeps me strong in tough times and helps keep me true to my path. I hope it does the same for you. Keep rocking Ankit!
I know this is way late to you but I hope things are going well for you now, and I trust you have found a new avenue in music to explore and discover in Pearl Jam. There's certainly a LOT to love there.
Guys. Rick just did an Instagram live Q&A. I asked him if he would do a video on Big Band Arranging and he said he used to teach band arranging and that ' only nerds like him ' would want to watch it. So if you are a music nerd who would love to see that (like me) give this a like to let Rick know. :)
I would watch you breakdown ANY Pearl Jam tune. a) you obviously love them, and b) I obviously love them. So ... yeah. Anytime you want to do more PJ, I won’t be clicking the thumbs down!
This is what MTV should be. About the music! I’m hearing songs I’ve heard so many times but appreciating them anew. Love this series. Would love to hear you do Alterbridge - Blackbird.
Jeff is a HUGE part of the band. They all do their thing but with no Jeff or Stone there is no Pearl Jam. Jeff is so underrated, as is Stone. Even some of the connections from riffs to chorus in songs like Faithful or In Hiding... when you actually listen you hear how much thought goes into the writing songs.. Glad you do these videos to keep reminding people of the beauty of song writing.
When this album first came out I thought it was awesome but I liked Vs. better as a teenager. Now I’m old as hell and find I like Ten better, strange how things change like that.
I lived the 60's 70's rock music, suffered through the disco era, found enough good in the 80's to hang in there and then woke up happy again in the 90's with too many great bands to mention. Ten is one of my fav albums of all time. Once had a discussion with a buddy where I said there are more great PJ songs on Ten than all the rest of their albums combined. He threw songs at me but didn't change my mind.
So many great songs that could be covered in a Pearl Jam episode but I feel this one especially highlights Eddie's emotional intensity and power in his performances. We hear so much praise for Chris Cornell these days, and for good reason, but I have always held Eddie at that same level. Artists like them are among the greats that have this one thing in common, aside from their technical chops, and that is that they pour everything out to you and seemingly hold nothing back. I get that feeling there is no reserve tank with a singer like Eddie. It's every performance 100% like it's going to be their last. I believe that is a big part of what makes this music so powerful. All that earnest, pure, unfiltered, and so relatable emotion that grabs you and you can't escape it if you wanted to. Thank you Eddie, Pearl Jam, and thank you Rick.
Stone Gossard was making some amazing music at that time. Straight off of Mother Love Bone, I love his sound during that period. Pinkpop '92 was one of the best live shows ever recorded.
I listened to that album over and over again in the early 90's and I still remember when "Garden" grabbed me. It's not that I overlooked it at the time, as "Ten" is a listen-all-the-way-through album, it's just that it was sort of overshadowed kinda by "Evenflow," "Jeremy," and "Black." I was at a stoplight in my "88 GMC pickup with the cassette playing and Eddie went into "I will waaaaalk, with my hands bound....." and the shivers hit me. I still remember being surprised at myself for not being hit by it sooner. It became my favorite song on the album, often rewound several times before continuing on to "Deep" and "Release." Then, back to the beginning.
There are songs that really make you sit your butt down and listen to them, and this is one of them. One of my favorite songs of any genre of all time.
snozbaries absolutely! Just saw them at Fenway twice. First time I saw them was 93 or 94 in Springfield mass. Countless time in-between. Hartford Ct has scene some great shows. 2013 rocked. Montreal was amazing too. Can’t remember the tear. Some of the most amazing times of my life.
I got to see the Lightning Bolt tour 2014. It was epic. 4 hours of just pearl jam. Their covers were amazing. Mike Mccready played eruption and it was absolutely mind blowing.
Saw 'em twice on their '92 tour, in Nottingham & Manchester, when they came over to the UK to tour Ten. Fucking brilliant shows, both of 'em. Still play Ten regularly even now.
Everything about it. The intro. The way eddies voice is an instrument and not a separate thing, Ament on bass, the drums, everything about garden is absolutely beautiful.
Garden was absolutely one of my favorite songs from that album, but it had so many gems, it was one of the few albums from that era that I could just pop in and play start to finish (like Faith No More ~ The Real Thing) Porch, Why Go, Deep, Release, amazing album.
I am stunned every time I hear one of these analyses. I struggle to find the words to express my gratitude, admiration and fascination for what you do, Rick. Until I find the words, I’ll just say thank you. Thank you so much
That is such an amazing song/LP. PJ changed my life in the early 90s. This is one of the greatest "What Makes This Song Great" you have done. Thanks Rick
I've known about Pearl Jam for years but never really listened to their stuff. After falling in love with Audioslave, Soundgarden and STP I finally started listening to their music earlier this year. Instantly fell in love with Ten (Redux), it's such an amazing album. Every song feels like a rock hymn of those strange and grungy 90s when I was a young boy and didn't know what was happening in the world, outside of my childhood bubble. Garden also happens to be one of my favs of this album and band. Sweet!!!
You know, I'm actually a bigger fan of the original cuts of almost every song on the album. I recommend trying to seek out the original album if you can.
The odds that you'd do what's been my favorite Pearl Jam song since the beginning seem astronomical.. But, alas, here it is. Thank you for this, Rick. I adore your channel and the wealth of knowledge and wisdom you provide.
I'd also like to see that ....think its in 5/4 Great song and great guitars ...main riff is killer Thanks for this .....literally just had it on in the car
Yeah i know dude. Guitars are killer in that song and the whole album! Any song would be great! Limo Wreck and My Wave are amazing as well. Pretty sure the main riff for Black Days is in 6/4.
SG are my favorite modern band. By "modern", I mean post classic rock bands like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, etc... Anything from Superunknown would be good to review, but then again, all of their albums are killer. If I had to pick my favorite 3 from SU, they would be Fresh Tendrils, Head Down, and Like Suicide. From Badmotorfinger: Slaves and Bulldozers, Searching With My Good Eye Closed, Mind Riot. From Louder Than Love: Uncovered, Loud Love, Gun. From UMO: Beyond the Wheel, Mood For Trouble, Flower. From DOTU: Overfloater, Burden in My Hand, Tighter & Tighter. KA: Black Saturday, Bones of Birds, A Thousand Days Before. SL/Fopp: Entering, Nothing To Say, Little Joe. Best covers: Come Together, Into the Void
My reaction in the last few weeks to your WMTSG videos have always been the same: "this is his best 'what makes this song great' rick has ever made, he can't top this". Yet, week after week, you have. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and views for all of us to see, learn and enjoy. Now, if could possibly make a few suggestions: - The Black Keys - The Flame - The Kills - The Heart Is A Beating Drum - Red Hot Chili Peppers - Dani California, Don't Forget Me (please see the live version at Slane Castle and especially at La Cigale if you haven't already!) or pretty much anything from Californication. - The Entrance Band - Pretty Baby - pretty much anything by Iggy and the Stooges, Tom Waits, Mark Lanegan, Malcolm Holcombe, Parliament/Funkadelic, early Muse. Anything really, you have my utmost appreciation.
Thanks for mentioning how Hendrix's influence is all over Pearl Jam's songwriting especially McCready's soloing guitar style, never noticed the similar drums style, now I can't un-hear it! Seattle geniuses!
I love this video. It not only goes into why Garden is such a great song, but touches on why Ten holds up so well and hangs together so tight. I never noticed Even Flow was like Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) before!
Wow, I would just love to hang out with you on a Sunday afternoon, gusting listening to music properly. I think you had to talk about the lyrics, as Eddie's voice is so beautiful and powerful and really, part of the instrumentation. That lyric sounds like a spiritual chant. Jeff and Stone are an amazing rhythm duo. I can tell you love them, for their musical class and quality. So many people miss out on PJ because of preconceptions, but they still rule the rock world. Their live shows are beyond amazing.
Rick- I love the editing of this video! The quick cuts from the elevator to the studio (mid sentence) to the lobby. Very nice. And the quick cut to the demo of a sliding harmonic on bass...perfection!
You're touching my soul with songs like this, deep deep emotional connection - Ten is an album like no other in my life, songs like Garden - totally underrated - but take me to a place, close my eyes, like no other song - thank you Rick
In my opinion one of the all time greatest rock songs and one of my favorite Pearl Jam songs. Still gives me the chills when I listen to it. Thanks Rick!
BEST. EPISODE. EVER. Thanks, Rick. Seeing how you get into the music like a little kid makes me feel less like a weirdo at 41 when I'm still THE SAME WAY! ☺ Thanks, Rick for being around and doing what you do! You're a game changer for UA-cam and for music lovers. Love you, brother!
This song always made feel it was a prayer, with the lyrics saying still so much today. It always moved me to tears. Great, great video. I'm with you on this Rick, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, all these great bands and songs
wingracer 16 That’s awesome! When I first heard Dirt, Down in a Hole was my favorite on the first side (Would? was the favorite on the second side). Either of these would be great to hear soloed!
This is one of the songs that I used to listen to this on my headphones when I was falling asleep at night as a kid. So ethereal and warm, thanks for dissecting this one Rick.
What I like about these videos is that Rick doesn’t go the easy route by picking the obvious songs that people would expect one to talk about. Highlighting the deeper cuts of a band’s oeuvre is a great way to introduce people to the tracks that many tend to overlook.
I really enjoy this format! Getting to hear more parts of the song over your explanation is fantastic. You can really get a feel for the song even if you have never heard it before. I was critical of a format change before so I wanted to make sure I was positive in this instance! Keep up the awesome work Rick!
This video is so great that I was legit tearing up a bit during some parts. This song and your dedication and love for music are a big inspiration to all of us.
He's a modern Prog-Rock legend! Most famous for his work as lead singer and songwriter for Porcupine Tree. He's been releasing music since the early 90's and is now a famous producer who remixes classic albums into 5.1 surround sound in his spare time. He's done it for Rush, Gentle Giant, XTC, Yes and King Crimson. He's also famous in the Metal community for producing some of Opeth's best albums: Blackwater Park, Deliverance and Damnation
@@MrBlastyBlast I'd love that, Trains, Normal, Sound of Muzac, 4 Chords... Last Chance... Even Less, Darkmatter, Open Car, Time Flies, Piano Lessons, Bkackest Eyes, Halo, Arriving Somewhere... the list goes on
What makes Porcupine Tree great? Soft soundscapes that lead into heavy distorted riffs and driving beats, authenticity, musicianship, some of the most haunting lyrics you've ever heard. "Never look for the truth in your mother's eyes." Gavin Harrison is one of the most brilliant drummers I've heard (as a fan of Weckl, Peart, etc), how he lays back to let the song breathe but also introduces complexity so tastefully and musically, you don't even realize it's happening.
Didn’t want this one to end. My favorite band since before they were a band. And by far, so far, my favorite Rick Beato video out of all of them. Love Pearl Jam. Love love love the music. Thanks for this one Mr. Beato!
Eddie is such a good singer. Turns out he is friends with one of my favorite musicians.....Neil Finn. He does a guest vocal appearance in a concert Neil did (which is on video) called Seven Worlds Collide (from 2001....I think) Ed O'brian and Phil Selway and Sebastian Steinburg make up the band. Johnny Marr and Lisa Germano also appear. It's pretty great. Sorry ....a bit off track But I do find it interesting that these incredibly talented people found themselves together. Back to the subject.....Rearview Mirror was the killer track from this record, IMHO. Thanks for all you do Rick. Love it all.
Loving the movement of shots and overlays of music and videos in this video. Really brings some extra depth to the analysis. Great idea and good execution. Highly recommend continuing down this structure path. I love all your videos, but this definitely comes across as being more gripping and inviting to new viewers.
Thank you, Rick, love THIS song, and will forever love PJ, my first concert at age 13! Really enjoying your great interviews and deep diving into music with you.
Love this song, proud you made its own episode! Always found it really mystifying because of the lyrics and the kind of babbled approach to the vocals! Keep the great work!
Thank you for this analysis Mr Beato! Every time I listen to this song I feel sad and melancholic but at the same time makes feel in peace, it’s a weird feeling. Love it!
Can you do Temple of the Dog - Four Walled World next or sometime. The vocals and instrumentation on that song are phenomenal. Chris Cornell's voice on that song is a whole new level. Or maybe another Soundgarden song like Head Down that uses some variety of sounds that I can't still make out, it's like plastic or wood. The sheer beauty of that song is that it sounds very complex. When I hear it is like everyone is playing their own unique song at their own pace and timing that, at the end, they just decided to combine and put it on the album. My fav Soundgarden song for sure. Thanks in advance if you decide si any of these songs. BTW, keep up the good work.
Head Down's rythm track is impossible to play as it is on album as a single drummer because there are like 3 percussionists playing simultaneously creating all sort of random polyrythms (i know the late Chris Cornell recording percussion in addition to Matt Cameron, I don't know if Kim Thayil and Ben Shepherd did that too since Ben wrote that song) One of my favourite Soundgarden song, those haunting slides, my goodness!
Eddie's part in the band is amazing because it sounds to me every song he sings is as fresh as the day he came up with the original ideas for the song. He makes the vocals sound unrehearsed and newly ideated. Almost like he is ad-libbing the lyrics and timing.
Loving these videos! Might I suggest Diary Of A Madman by Ozzy Osbourne and the late great Randy Rhoads? :D Having lived in Seattle in the early 90's, I was lucky to see these guys live several times, and got to meet them a couple times. Great guys and great music!

Oggy Oggy Jeff is totally underrated and grossly overlooked when it comes to bass players.
Jeff Ament doesn't get enough credit as a bass player. His work is amazing
Agreed! He is awesome
That’s because Brendan Obrien’s horrible mixes always drowned out his bass lines. It’s a crime.
@@cobrakaiX Any examples of this ? I've yet to find a PJ album where I can't distinctively hear the bass, or any other instrument.
I’ve said this before, Jeff Ament is the John Paul Jones of his generation.

Great choice. One of my all-time faves of theirs and probably the most interesting to listen to, with how it builds.
I feel Adam's influence in production of this video. Walking around talking to a camera and then mix in a video.
I want a copy of all Pearl Jam's master tapes.
Hahaha
Love hearing it broken down like this... I want to hear them all like it.
My reaction in the last few weeks to your WMTSG videos have always been the same: "this is his best 'what makes this song great' rick has ever made, he can't top this". Yet, week after week, you have. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and views for all of us to see, learn and enjoy. Now, if could possibly make a few suggestions:
- The Black Keys - The Flame
- The Kills - The Heart Is A Beating Drum
- Red Hot Chili Peppers - Dani California, Don't Forget Me (please see the live version at Slane Castle and especially at La Cigale if you haven't already!) or pretty much anything from Californication.
- The Entrance Band - Pretty Baby
- pretty much anything by Iggy and the Stooges, Tom Waits, Mark Lanegan, Malcolm Holcombe, Parliament/Funkadelic, early Muse. Anything really, you have my utmost appreciation.
That whole album is haunted.
There was something in the jam... like a pearl
Hahaha that's a funny way to put it
Id say haunting
More PJ please! The sheer catalog of bangers from these guys on the first 3 albums is incredible.
A wild Adam Neely appears
The drum intro on track#4, Why Go, is sensational, and epitomises everything Rick was describing with Dave Krusen's booming drum work. Bravura!
Rick- I love the editing of this video! The quick cuts from the elevator to the studio (mid sentence) to the lobby. Very nice. And the quick cut to the demo of a sliding harmonic on bass...perfection!
The chorus of this song always gave me chills and really makes my soul explode
I forgot how awesome this song truly is. Thanks, Rick,
Every song on this album is fantastic. Thanks for covering one of the lesser known ones. It's always been one of my favorites, personally.
You're touching my soul with songs like this, deep deep emotional connection - Ten is an album like no other in my life, songs like Garden - totally underrated - but take me to a place, close my eyes, like no other song - thank you Rick
Stunning riff. Stunning song. And fits so perfectly towards the end of Ten after all the energy in the first half of the album.
I love how emotional you get in this video. Must be the Pearl Jam!
Greetings from Germany to Germany!
Multitrack is the great thing! to hear isolated vocal like he singing right beside is awesome! feeling all his emotions.. thank you, Rick!
I just want to say I absolutely love this show. Your passion is infectious.
Thank you Hangnail!
Ten is such a masterpiece. Vitalogy and Yield are also amazing. Pearl Jam owned the 90s.
This song always made feel it was a prayer, with the lyrics saying still so much today. It always moved me to tears. Great, great video. I'm with you on this Rick, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, all these great bands and songs
Ten will always be close to my heart. One of my favourite albums. Thanks for analysing Garden for us, Rick.
Best episode yet - and I’m not even a huge PJ fan. Great edits. Now I’m thinking this album needs another listen.
Pearl Jam is one of the most soulful bands ever! Hope they never change!
Please do Pearl Jam - Black!
Love your work!
My favorite.
He did it! He did it!🙂
I'm glad Garden is getting some recognition. Such a beautiful and thoughtful song
We need another Alice In Chains!!! Down in a Hole!!
Also the chorus to Garden is the same chord progression as the Down in a Hole chord progression. Am - G - D
Hey Air Guitar I have VIP tickets for AIC next Saturday nite First Council Casino Newkirk OK, can't wait!
Air Guitar boring choice, what the hell have I is a better choice
wingracer 16 That’s awesome! When I first heard Dirt, Down in a Hole was my favorite on the first side (Would? was the favorite on the second side). Either of these would be great to hear soloed!
Jeff Engelbrecht damn that’s awesome!
This is one of the songs that I used to listen to this on my headphones when I was falling asleep at night as a kid. So ethereal and warm, thanks for dissecting this one Rick.
I remember doing chores to get my parents to buy me this record from the record exchange back then. Awesome album then and now.
Perfect ending : "love Pearl Jam" :)
It's incredible how Rick can take a song I already love and make me love it like 10 times more.
Me: Clicks on video, watches half of it, opens another UA-cam page, looks up song, listens, comes back to Beato.
I remember being 11 years old and listen to this album every day for a year i think. One of my first cds i bought
me too! one of the first bands i bought
I'm kinda surprised you haven't done anything by Steven Wilson yet. I'd have thought he'd be right up your alley
Who?
He's a modern Prog-Rock legend! Most famous for his work as lead singer and songwriter for Porcupine Tree. He's been releasing music since the early 90's and is now a famous producer who remixes classic albums into 5.1 surround sound in his spare time. He's done it for Rush, Gentle Giant, XTC, Yes and King Crimson.
He's also famous in the Metal community for producing some of Opeth's best albums: Blackwater Park, Deliverance and Damnation
Love your Love of Pearl Jam!
Do Porcupine Tree PLEASE!
Fear of a Blank Planet is a masterpiece
@@MrBlastyBlast I'd love that, Trains, Normal, Sound of Muzac, 4 Chords... Last Chance... Even Less, Darkmatter, Open Car, Time Flies, Piano Lessons, Bkackest Eyes, Halo, Arriving Somewhere... the list goes on
Yes!!!!
@@JiBenJiBee I think you nailed it 👍
Didn’t want this one to end. My favorite band since before they were a band. And by far, so far, my favorite Rick Beato video out of all of them. Love Pearl Jam. Love love love the music. Thanks for this one Mr. Beato!
"I love Pearl Jam.."
Me too Rick, me too..
This is such an astonishingly beautiful song, emphasised so effectively Rick. So awesome that you chose it!
Eddie is such a good singer. Turns out he is friends with one of my favorite musicians.....Neil Finn. He does a guest vocal appearance in a concert Neil did (which is on video) called Seven Worlds Collide (from 2001....I think)
Ed O'brian and Phil Selway and Sebastian Steinburg make up the band.
Garden was on Ten, Rearviewmirror was on Vs. but still a great track. Eddie guesting with other musicians is always great!
This is by far the very best video on all of UA-cam and the best ever video ever made on any video maker on the earth.
Loving the movement of shots and overlays of music and videos in this video. Really brings some extra depth to the analysis. Great idea and good execution. Highly recommend continuing down this structure path. I love all your videos, but this definitely comes across as being more gripping and inviting to new viewers.
I've always liked this song. Eddie's vocals sound so smooth. Love the acoustic intro.
Black please!
That's simply my favorite track from Ten. Great video, as Always.
I gave a thumbs up before watching this video because i Knew it was going to be awesome !!!
Yeah rick is awesome!!!!
Same.
Me too!
Seconded. My favorite totd song
Hunger strike
Finally some Pearl Jam, one of my favorite bands ever!
Sometime maybe you could do Times of Trouble by Temple of the Dog. This is great.
Yes that vocal is amazing!
Or Footsteps by Pearl Jam
Or BOTH, seeing as they're essentially the same song. Someone did a fantastic mashup of the two on UA-cam.
Having lived in Seattle in the early 90's, I was lucky to see these guys live several times, and got to meet them a couple times. Great guys and great music!
thatd be amazing diary is my fav ozzy song :)
@@axemurderer010 That song is intricate. Quite amazing, including the lyrics.
This is probably the best put together episode of the series. Something about the editing goes very well with the song.
God Am - Alice in Chains
I think it's one of their best songs
Franz Josef Wolf I agree!
When the guitar fade-ins happen in the chorus, its spooky.
Sure God's all-powerful, but does he have lips? Whoa
Jeff Ament is THE most underrated bass player. Such a subtle style, it's easy to not even realize what he is doing for a song
