A small go-anywhere firetruck would be a wise edition to Cerro Gordo. Just my 2 Shekels as a former Wildfirefighter, it's great to have water. It's also good to be able to get it where you need it.

I was thoroughly STOKED for 26min 20sec- so happy to see everything that went into so epic an accomplishment. I did not see that last minute coming. Seeing the road like that, totally unrecognizable from the few times I've driven it and realizing how it'll affect things, is crushing. I'm so sorry. It's just one more thing to overcome, but I have all the faith in you, your people, and CG's extended community of supporters & volunteers.

When it’s raining, put buckets out. Free water! Welcome to “The Land of Little Rain”, but when it rains, watch out. Even as a kid I watched and followed the weather, it’s so important and can change very quickly. I grew up in the Owens Valley, I’m 5th generation to do so. I’m so honored as I love every creek, river and hill to mountain peak, but it’s wild country and you have to be prepared for anything and everything. It’s a joy to watch all that you have done at Cerro Gordo. So many of my ancestors were miners, I loved the stories. You’re now writing yours.

One thing you can do with a firewater tank that has a specific code volume requirement is use the higher level as a buffer for everyday water use. The take off would need to be above the level for the required volume. That allows you to have some circulation in the big tank so it’s not stagnant.

    • @RylaDarkstar
      @RylaDarkstar 2 роки тому +26

Yeah considering they have to boil water before use it would just allow them a bigger pool to use from. Assuming they hook it up to the pump from the mine. And it keeps refilling. But then you'd have issues with mineral accumulation in the tank and on lines. Etc always another problem. But this is a victory!

    • @Bluenoser613

I’m surprised he found something more dangerous than exploring the mine. I’ve seen him not using edge protectors on ropes that he is hanging from while climbing.. Ropes that he has run down over the edges of rocks. He’s tipped old dynamite that could have sweated nitroglycerin out of an old bag onto the ground and thrown his respirator in a barrel full of galena / lead he was collecting. Not to mention exploring partially collapsed tunnels and sticking his arms out of the freight elevator.
Now he’s sitting on the very front of the water tank on the ride up the hill. A big enough pothole could have made him fall off and then it’s straight under the front wheels.
My dad was a rigger for a while, I’ve worked in a few different trades. I didn’t need my dad or anybody else to tell me that standing under heavy stuff = bad idea.
They should have levelled the ground and set up the sleepers before they swung the tank over.
Even if you trust the guy that rigged this with your life, I wouldn’t trust that there isn’t a defect in the cables or hooks that is holding this up.
I don’t mean to rant. I like this guy, but he lacks common sense sometimes.
I’ve lived a pretty reckless life but not at work or on construction sites. I’m not dying with boots on.

25:20 "I'm still waiting for something to drop still. Everything's just gone so smooth. I can't believe it." For the nightmare the flood damage seems to have caused, having gotten the tank in place at all makes the rest meaningless. Even a minor delivery delay of hours would have set everything back a day. Had that tank got caught mid-way up the hill when the rain's hit, THAT would truly have been the end of it.

Hello Brent, thank you for everything, watching your videos inspired me a couple of years back to start explore the history behind the gold mines on my family farm in which the biggest gold nugget in New Zealand was once found in the 1880's, The Arethusa Nugget. I have re discovered a lot of tunnels and shafts that have been lost over the years to logging and farming though a lot of it still remains in the thick bush of the gullies. every weekend I go out there and explore hoping to find something new as well as documenting what I find along the way so that when the tunnels and shafts are all collapsed and are re-taken by the forest the future generation will still have some idea as to what once existed in the Longwood forest. Sadly a lot of the existing tunnels have collapsed with few remaining, but there is still more to be discovered that is hiding under the thick vegetation, some of the shafts have become over grown and covered with a thin layer of sticks and leaves making it difficult and some what dangerous to explore with some shafts dropping straight down up to 120ft, but that is what makes life interesting and I wouldn't have it any other way. I some day hope to move out there so I can better document my findings and become more familiar with the land, there is not much online or in books about the Arethusa and its surrounding mines, such as the Pioneer, The El Dorado and the Invercargill, so most of my information has come from old archived News papers and local knowledge. The rest of my family doesn't have much of an interest in the history of it so I believe it is up to me to keep the memory alive well I wait for someone else with a similar interest as me take over. Thank you for everything you have done here on UA-cam, your videos have not only helped keep Cerro Gordo alive but I believe they have helped save many other Mines, such as my ones, that would have been left to disappear into time becoming only a rumor of what once was life for many hard working young men who traveled over land and sea to risked their life's deep under ground in hopes of striking it rich.
Once again I thank you for everything and I wish you the best of luck.

Always exciting when big things are happening, and that was huge! That rain and flash flood are probably a blessing in disguise. Now you know you have periodic water events. Make a map of where all the water came from and the flows while it's fresh. You can mitigate some of that damage in the future with some diversion channels into catch basins. Once the sediments separate, you could pump that water into your 40K gallon tank, or use it for irrigation around the hotel. Any retained water is good water in a place like Cero Gordo, even if it's only every few years.

Well said. I'd seen the flooding in Death Valley and first thought was I hoped Brent and Cerro Gordo were ok. Shows the power of nature how quickly it scoured away the road. On the plus side, as you say it's a chance to see where to site some catch basins and perhaps that swimming pool/reservoir, especially if there's any clay handy. And the rain might also have exposed some old debris, or indicate where it'd likely be washed to after previous floods. I get the feeling old bottles may not have survived those experiences though.

if you want to be fancy you could mix in soil cement - for that you would need to water the road , but you would have a concrete paved road for litlle money
    maybe JPaydirt could help you
also id use this opportunity to have tight spots in the road eliminated, blast out tight turns eliminate tight spots and create a drainage ditch on the spots where the road became a creekbed so the road holds up better and longer than ever it would definately ease commercial travel a lot and increase the acessibility of the future hotel
id ask construction companies if they have interest to demonstrate new equipment in these extreme conditions

I must add...the camera shots from air ...the music which I believe is perfect. It makes the story telling and witnessing everything being done so dramatic and enchanting at the same time...❤❤

Oh wow, I'm so glad that you guys were able to get that tank all the way up to Cerro Gordo so smoothly and without mishap! What an awesome feat!! Kudos to Brent and everyone else involved!! Once the rain and flash flooding is finished, you will be able to get back into things! I'm thinking of you all and sending hugs all the way from Australia!!

That was an awesome video Brent! Loved almost every minute of it. Except the last one. What an unwelcome twist to this chapter. Wish you all the luck, wisdom and help to overcome this unexpected hurdle. I have a lot of faith in you, your crew and the extended volunteering community that this one will also be overcome.
    Good luck!

Your channel is riveting. Love your energy. My mind is racing with "what would I do" ideas but the one that keeps popping up is about the water/drought situation. The tanker is a band aid to bigger challenge. "I would" look into water catchments, permaculture and regreening the surrounding land. I know your plate is overflowing with projects and priorities but just needed to put it out there since I saw no other comment about this. Can't wait to see more!

Here in what I can do to support you for this project. Here from HeavyDsparks channel. I am in central WY and need a place to travel next summer. Went to Thermopolis this summer (at 36 with a healing broken ankle and 9 year old) and have been a few times to Glenwood springs as a kid. Excited for you and how well everything has gone! I will keep watching.

Wow! What a turn in the weather! Great that you got the tank installed when you did. Who knows how long it would have sat in Keeler if the rains had come just two days sooner. Keep the faith. Things will work out in the end.

Hello there, if you saw the reply to your comment that was NOT Brent, it was someone pretending to be him. Please don't interact with them, thanks!
(Also a note, there is an account going around pretending to be me saying that it's real. That is not me either)

@@KimberleyW You do not seem like the real Kim. You must prove you are who you say you are, because you are alleging the falsities, which include "yourself."

It’s amazing to see from the first episode it was Brent’s dream to give new life to Cerro Gordo. Now it’s a community making this dream possible.
