- Wilko has gone into administration after talks to save the discount retailer collapsed.
The high street giant which operates 400 stores, filed for a notice of intent to appoint administrators on August 3, after the chain struggled to pay suppliers over the past year.
Cristo speaks with CEO of the British Independent Retailers' Association Andrew Goodacre about the retailer and the further implications which have led to its difficulties.
Will you miss Wilko if it closes?
Absolutely not.
YES
Yes
YES...
Nope .. 🇬🇧
We lost Woolworths some years ago and now it's Wilco's! Mail order is o.k. for some things, but not everything!! 😭
Have you not got a B&M, Home Bargains or The Range near you? They all stock the same stuff as Wilkos did...
@@dftfire We have a B&M. I guess I'll take a look around. There was one downside with our Wilco. . .They closed the back doors and the lift couldn't be used either. The car park was at the top of a hill that was around 1in 4, which wasn't any fun with a trolley and two bags of compost!! They had removed the till at the far end of the store, leaving only the one entrance and exit.
not when you have to pay £7 delivery for a £1 item!!
@@dean6816 Well don't order a £1 item then! I think Wilkos did free-delivery if you spent above £15. So once there were enough items you needed that combined they would all cost more then £15, then order them all together 🙃
That's a good idea 🙄@@dftfire
I always went to wilko for stationaries, home stuff and hardware. Quality was good and price is great and never really went to other competitors but i did noticed that stocks were getting less and less. It’s really sad cos i really do love wilko and I don’t want them to disappear😢
Whenever I want something, I go to Wilko
They never fail me and the staff are great
great tool section 🪛
The staff are great, but in the last 4-5 months particularly, my family and I have struggled to find some stuff in our local two Wilko stores ever. Even the website said no local store had stock. So we ended up having to find alternatives, and I'd imagine many will have done the same now
Our high street is now full of barbers.
Barbers with no customers... 🇬🇧⬅️🌍
🤔
Or takeaways
barbers with funny accents!!!!
The High Street is failing because of parking restrictions, high rates and poor town planning- too many charity shops, and gambling places, too few artisans and pavement cafes, not to mention its now illegal to stand in your shop door with an apron on…..why???? That’s a classic way to encourage community and get to know locals.
truth is the highstreets have been struggling since online shopping. May aswell turn them into warehouses.
There are 'others' .. the country DOESNT revolve around Oxford Street ... 🇬🇧
Social media doesn't loot, people do, criminals.
I like wilko but i feel like they're unsure about what their main focus should be.
I recently went shopping to a large city, saw something I really liked in a well known store, asked if they had it in my size, the sales person said, No, but you can order it online.....she was right, thats not helping her retain her job or saving the high street, is it? obviously, its not the fault of the sales person, I hasten to add
Public servants have forgotten their place.
You can't keep taxing companies out of business, it's bloody obvious !!
The collapse of the high street is Retail Parks.
You can park for free and easily.
There are multiple big stores to suit everyone. There are also supermarkets, food outlets, and coffee shops.
I struggle to park in both my nearest towns. Limited time parking 🅿️ usually around 1 to 2 hours.
Yes both are full of vap shops, barbers and cafes.
Not worth driving into any more 😢
Be interesting to see how ulez affects the high streets in London.
My experience of online purchases are of 50% disappointment, some of which can be said to be absolute junk.
Bring back Retail, PLEASE! Particularly Wilko!
let not forget the Charity shops......they are everywhere
I went to Wilco for Seed compost. EMPTY SHELF. Out of town supermarket... STOCKED. 🇬🇧
Yeah, that was the experience for me and my family in recent-months... stuff we have wanted to buy from Wilko, including many regular-purchase items, but they never had them in any time we went. So we've found alternatives from other shops now 🤷🏻♂️
My local town is dead I go in at least once a week it's all coffee shops vape shops n bargain shops n fast food
And charitie shops
I love Wilko!!!
Me too 👍
I miss our High Street as it used to be. Please stop using online shopping. Can this be better than seeing, feeling, and trying the goods you are want to buy. Plus local councils rates who seem to be driving these shops away. They have to be high to drive the likes of Debenhams, M & S , Burtons, and other shops we grew up with, off the High Street altogether.
I went to Wilco for loose grass seed to finish a largish lawn, no stock. l bought £50 at it elseware
Wanted some new rubber seat tube cushions again not stocked anymore bought at Amazon.
For years l have seen them moving from a traditional hardware shop to a foodhall.
Their business model was a disaster!
I used to shop in Liverpool City Centre. It looks like a foreign country there now. I won't spend a penny there now as I'm not funding the demise of my own people. I refuse to go into the city centre. Let it sink.
This is Sad news ..we will Miss them if they go ..Still Miss Woolworths 😢
1) lower business rates to encourage new/existing business and start-ups.
2) use planning to ensure a range of different stores and prevent the dominance of pound shops, bookies and those buy & sell pawnbroker type shops.
3) let's start seeing an effective deterrent against looters, pickpockets and fingersmiths.
Business and shoppers have a right to be protected and will work with the police and local authorities on the issue.
Who knew that soulless greed would put people off of town centres, youd think itd all work out perfectly wouldnt u, imo.
Don't forget ULEZ
Didn't an autistic child get arrested recently by calling an officer ULEZ? 😂
You missed the effect of ULEZ charges and congestion charges.
Could it also be due to people not being able to afford their homes, bills, food, and barely have enough to make ends meet for going to coffee shops, hairdressers, etc. Hard to put into fhe High Street well enough, if wages etc. aren't high enough to spend it..
I don't think it's essential for people to have to go to coffee shops. For those who cannot afford the things you mentioned, maybe stop going to them, make your latte or cappuccino at home and save money? 🤷🏻♂️
@@dftfire I am saying that people can not afford to do these things, so those particular businesses are going to struggle.
And true coffee shops aren't essential, but we as human beings are social creatures, we need to be around others, and it can a great place to feel connected to others, to work, to relax. There is an experience to going outside, not just for the product.
Who wants to work all day, or home with the family, and then stay again at home without feeling they have been anywhere else all day.. that's not good for anyone's mental health.
The fact is people are already doing things at home to save money, instead of going to the High Street, because it's too expensive, and their wages have not kept up with inflation, and if people don't go to the High Street, businesses can't afford to pay the (rising) costs to remain open, and more shops and businesses will shut, and the High Street will no longer be a place that anyone wants to go to.
I wouldn't know one person that isn't already trying to budget even tighter than before, save those that won't ever have to worry because they are rich enough that they'll never be affected, and are disconnected with what the general public are having to face.
High Streets are full of Coffee shops and Greasy Fast Food shops ..nothing British anymore !
Stay away.
The only way out is : wall to wall black market.
Don't play the taxes game
Gutted, I go in Wilko at least 1 a month.... 🙁
If you have a B&M, Home Bargains or The Range near you, they all do a similar range to what Wilkos did
And for the occasional £1 item (which you mentioned in another thread you would spend in a Wilko on some visits) then you could try a place called "Poundland" 🙃
@@dftfire *dftfire* The New Martin Lewis!!
Who drives to the highstreet?
Its just a name. Plenty of similar stores selling the same things.
Yeah... I feel for the staff, but it's not like B&M, Home Bargains and The Range don't do all the same stuff. And for the homewares, pharmaceuticals and toiletries, even most large supermarkets now will cover that 🤷🏻♂️
@@dftfire Yeah the question was would we miss it...its the staff that will.
No one with half a brain shops in the high street. The only shops i use locally are supermarkets for food. Everything else comes from eBay where it's 50% to 25% cheaper.
Yes but do u still walk around the shops window shopping? Cos that was the british culture, not so much the buying imo, people went just for a walk,a pleasant stroll round town just to look around n see what happens imo, town centres used to be full of kids with no money, but it was the 1 place most parents, even girl parents, let them hang out with friends knowing theyd be safe imo.
@@petersmith5915 Bloody hell mate I'm 64 & all that stopped 40 odd years ago. Window shopping Turkish barbers & charity shops ! you're having a laugh.😄
Will the Tories miss Wilko's?
