Yeah i feel like Diablo 4's release could be the final straw for most Blizzard fans. It all comes down to how it is released and how the game is long term.
My biggest problem with OW2 outside of the terrible monetisation scheme (8 months of grinding F2P to earn enough tokens for a legendary skin) is how they have reduced player interaction. Not only is it big stuff like fresh accounts not having emotes / sprays to physically interact in that sense, but also the sense of progression or that you or anyone else were doing well in that match. No level borders, no on fire visibility (new voicelines for it though), no medals even though as you point out - the scoreboard puts all your details in front of everyone. You can't endorse the enemy team no matter how well you think they played and say goodbye to cards at the end - you got 21 jump pack elims as Winston? Good luck getting anyone to care now buddy. Even the game time cuts the ending short. There's barely any time to say "gg" let alone discuss the game or heaven forbid, talk shit and meme around. And yet despite all the claims blizzard have made about combatting toxicity - in that launch week I was abused in game far more than the last few months of playing OW. But that's the price we have to pay to even be able to communicate at all it seems, how long until Blizzard remove chats as a way for players to interact with each other? OW2 gameplay with OW1 progression and interaction please and thank you. Outside of launch week, I haven't felt like playing Overwatch 2. This is the first time since Overwatch's first year that I've gone more than a week without playing.

Honestly, this guy's too nice. Sometimes a game makes changes that suck, and that shouldn't be sugarcoated or things get worse. For me, OW2 is absolutely one of those games. It makes unnecessary changes that actively worsen the experience, my personal most-irritating aspect of bad sequels, it had its memetically awful launch, and it's taking ever greater steps to reduce what little privacy we can have by recording chat and making you give them your phone number. And the tank change gives you even fewer options, so that's bad too. I do like the point of "what about those who miss the old versions." While some games like Cuphead let you play the original launch version with no bugfixes if you want, for most you gotta turn to mods. I don't know much about Blizz mods, but for something akin to what is described, check out Team Fortress 2 Classic. Highly recommend.
@Beats some of the changes they made are fine, but I would argue that a majority of the changes made in this game and in OW1 either make the characters worse or less interesting. Take Genji, for instance. Remember that cool advanced tech he had where by dashing onto a climbable ledge the lift over the ledge got the momentum from the dash and he would go flying? It was difficult, not completely broken, and extremely cool, the trifecta of a great bit of advanced tech. Completely gone because they never intended it. Or how about removing McCree's stun? Yeah it's less annoying I will concede, but replacing it with another grenade is definitionally less interesting.
@Beats Yes, I literally said "in this game and in OW1." Throwing that in my face isn't much of a gotcha. So you say the mag grenade is annoying. The flashbang was also annoying. They replaced one annoying piece of kit that the character was designed around with a less-interesting piece of kit that the character was not designed around that is still annoying. Doesn't sound like an improvement to me.
@Beats No I'm not. The move to 5v5 continues the trend of reducing options, which is not a good thing. Let people play the game. If you mean the balance changes in OW1 are good, that's just laughable, and if it's OW2, we're already seeing unintended side effects of that with how supports are simultaneously needing to be in and stay out of sightlines. I can agree that the removal of many barriers makes the game more fun, but the game was designed around barriers and having them removed will have a knock-on effect.
@Beats the "problems of 6v6" were, as you yourself admit, a problem with tanks. Role lock also reduced options and wasn't the way to go to fix the issue. It has always been a bandaid and it influenced this further mistake. It's far too early to tell if the game is actually better without the barriers or if the shift toward this more hyperoffense style is just more fun in the short term.
Huge throwback when the RotMG clips showed up - but honestly a pretty good comparison. Both are online multiplayer games with a short gameplay loop, making updates essential for the longevity of the game. OW2 is like RotMG Exalt, the game is basically the same but we can optimistically hope for its new burst of attention to push the devs to make the game more fun
I feel like people would like Overwatch 2 if it wasn't a clear desparation move by Blizzard after their horrendous last few years. When your company is going through the wringer and suddenly a new game comes out that feels rushed, I understand the disappointment. Also, do you think marking some of the old realm dungeon guides as outdated would be smart? I know some are basically the same, but the shatters is so wildly different now it feels appropriate

Loved the branch from main content to talking about OW 2! I have had a blast playing this game for all the same reasons you stated. There are obvious flaws, but I feel that if changes can be made that OW 2 could be a great game.
"Considering how long a season last that may be feasible" ...Oh boy. Okay, so, you get 60 coins a week, at most. The season is like, what, 63 days? 63 x 7 = 9, that's 9 weeks, 60 x 9 that's 540. And to upgrade to Premium is 1000. That's one Premium after every two battle passes. That is not fucking good. There's also the fact that each and every Legendary skin on its own is 1900, and some you can't even get on their own, like ones restricted to "bundles" which are usually 2200. That is the price of a battle pass *and* 20 tiers. Yeah, this system is dog shit.
the only thing that overwatch 2 is missing is just all the post game stuff that the older version had, with all the medals and stuff. New system just ends far too quickly for you to even fully digest the match you just played. Btw great video! After the massive sexual harassment lawsuit that got them sued by the entire state of California, banning Blitzchung just for saying "Free Hong Kong", and Diablo Immortal winning the award for most amount of predatory microtransactions in a game, I can't ever play another Blizzard game again and will never support them. I don't understand how anyone can play this game and support them even if it is free to play.
I think you’re excusing a lot of bad business practices and unkept promises because you enjoy the core gameplay, but even so I respect your opinion, and am glad you find enjoyment in it. It’s also interesting to hear somebody who doesn’t play a lot of FPS games talk about his thoughts on one. I think I still prefer your content on single player experiences, but this was not a bad video at all.
I definitely feel like the game could use some accessibility options found in other shooters. And the lack of things like gyro aiming & flick stick are especially glaring considering their presence in the likes of Splatoon (for the former) & Fortnite (for both). More so since playing with PC players turns off aim assist.
I never got super into OW1 but I liked what I played. And I liked the tiny bit i played in 2. Coming from Tf2 it's nice to have a game that gets new content and changes, but I never got into big multiplayer games outsides of tf2
I hope they re add loot boxes or a way to grind skins more, besides comp it was the only rewarding thing in the game and now we have to either grind 8 STRAIGHT MONTHS of weekly challenges or to spend $20 for a single skin that used to be free and maybe a week of unlucky boxes and you could buy it
Regarding the "not being able to access the old game to compare (or just play for old time's sake)" issue, we have CS2 now which is doing the same thing, as valve completely delisted CS:GO.
Feels more like a small visual and balancing overhaul with the intigration of a free to play monetization model. At least I can still get into a game and the balancing isn't totally off the rails though them canceling the fleshed out pve killed my motivation to play.
After all the scandals with Activision and Blizzard, and predatory lootboxes and microtransactions... why support Overwatch 2? Why would someone ever want gambling to return? This video baffles me...
I think this is mostly a pretty solid video, but there's just a couple things. "You play a single player game and it'll be the same adventure for the rest of time. Though nowadays it might get a dlc or an update, but any significant changes would be reserved for a sequel, or a different series by that creator." This could've been more comprehensive, significant gameplay changes actually could happen through an update or dlc as well depending on the size of it. Similarly, a single player game can be remade or remastered. It doesn't need to be a new entire series either. All fair but it does self contradict the previous argument of it being the same for the rest of time. It would be smoother to specify for retro titles. Of course the "self contained" games have no updates or dlc, though the point itself could've been made a bit clearer. Also for "online games don't have that luxury of complacency." I think it's important to note that there isn't complacency for the games that got updates of course, though it's hard to call any games without updates "complacent" when lack of updates or no, we don't know why a game, especially nowadays wouldn't have updates. It could come off as presumptuous. I also think certain multiplayer games don't need updates often as long as they're good games like Team Fortress 2, it barely gets updates now but still has a strong community. Otherwise, good video and really funny in places.
I have a lot of respect for the way you present your opinions. This is the first even remotely positive review of OW2 that hasn't made me hostile. I mostly just resent OW2's blatant pro-scene-focused Dev approach.
One thing I find absolutely horrible is how they did the character unlock system. I'd rather have the Paladins system of getting some gold after every match and then unlocking whatever champ you want with that earned gold. What if I wanna play Wrecking Ball? Play 175 matches to unlock the only character I wanted to try? No. I just played exclusively Mercy during the week I played it and let me tell you, solo queuing casual, because you haven't WON 50 MATCHES TO UNLOCK COMPETITIVE YET, as Mercy is worse than hell.
I feel like instead of this being announced as “Overwatch 2” it should have been labeled, “2.0” or something similar along those lines. As nothing really was added or removed that couldn’t just necessitate updating the game itself. By “Rebranding” it into a secondary game (and I mean rebranding) they are essentially implying that their was an Overwatch 1 and they just made a new game entirely as per stated in the video. But indeed that was not the case and just added a massive update to the original game itself. One example that correlates with this is Destiny. Bungie had made an entirely separate new game called “Destiny 2” and it was indeed a second game. It wasn’t rehashed or rebranded to make it look nicer, but instead gave a whole feel of something new and fresh. And they never took away the original game. You can still go back to this day and play the original Destiny if you so choose. Now that’s not to say their isn’t anything wrong with creating a massive overhaul for a game through one big update. But that shouldn’t be considered a “second game”. Because it’s not. And I feel like Blizzard would have been ok still had they instead just announced it to be an entire overhaul to the game, (which essentially that’s all it was) instead of branding it into saying that it’s a second game entirely because once again, to make a 2, there needs to be a 1. It’s basic arithmetics. Online games do this all the time. They will refurbish it to make it look better and play better both graphics and gameplay wise but it will still be the same and advertise it as merely a big update overhaul. And it would still be labeled the same thing. It’s not that I don’t like Overwatch 2, but I agree with the idea that it feels, Incomplete. Now I know part of it is because they took away a good portion of the game, but to do that and called it a “second game” doesn’t feel right. It feels like we’ve instead gone backwards. And that’s what pisses me off most about it. It’s the content, or rather the lack of, that bothers me so much. They took away what made the game exciting for the small bits that it was and didn’t do anything to expand on it. It’s like making 2 types of pizzas except one just doesn’t have meat on it and still costing the same. Technically their different but all you did was take stuff off and didn’t do anything else.
I also didn't like FPS games growing up , my first experience with it is my cousin steamrolling me in Modern Warfare 2 , where I was literally too scared to move . Then I played Destiny ... Nowadays I have some experience with the genre , but I still don't like it all that much .
Oh man, I didn’t know OW2 completely overwrites OW1. That’s wild to me. I guess since it’s free and fully online, there’s no reason to release an entirely new game. I think there is, but I get it.
overwatch 2 is like when Team Fortress 2 went free-to-play, but if everything that could go wrong DID go wrong Your criticism of the erasure of overwatch 1 brings to light something I fucking loathe about modern online games. Fear of missing out and intentionally creating lost media and inaccessible content. fortnite is the best example- how many HUNDREDS of hours of work on the part of the developers are now just... gone forever? Imagine working for months on a new season and coding and creating assets for these small playable story segments and then 6 months later, nuked. No one will ever play it again. Why? To encourage people to get anxious and buy the battle pass each season and play as much as possible. It's fucking evil.
Yeah the fact that people are playing this boggles my mind. Even if it's free to play you're still supporting a company that had such a massive sexual harassment problem that they got sued by the state of California, a company who banned a pro player for saying "Free Hong Kong, and a company that holds the record for worse mobile microtransaction filled game of all time
I love overwatch and have played it since launch. I just feel like some changes were a little unnecessary as well. Like, the hud and stuff are minimal and clean, with some improvements, but I also feel some of the character and charm was lost or changed. I also miss the loot boxes. You could at least have a chance to get stuff for free, now even old skins have some ridiculous prices! 😮💨😅 I'm gonna have to accept it I guess. I hate that every modern game has the same predatory marketing stuff in them. 😔
Agreed the hud changes were completely unneeded and predatory marketing sucks. It'd have been cool if they would have put a free lootbox in every tenth tier so that the system could still kind of stay in the game and f2ps could get cosmetics but I don't expect any generosity from blizzard.
I'm going to preface this by saying I haven't played Overwatch 2, and I played the original and didn't like it. However, I watched the entire video and I find it interesting that Halo Infinite, another live service FPS had a very similar complaint. It seems to be a trend that live service games feel incomplete because they don't seem pressured to make a great foundational impression on their games. Although, I do want to say that I think the complaint of a lack of loot boxes is really interesting. I wish that after a few battle passes, live service games like Overwatch and Infinite had lootboxes that you could only earn via gameplay. I don't think it's a good to charge people for lootboxes at all, but using that as an incentive to keep playing the game would still give them the same result of making people want to keep playing, and have returning players wanting to go back. It's surprising to me that they abandoned concepts like these because of how predatory they made the system to get money out of the player, when they could easily tweak those systems to make their newer models seem less predatory in nature.
When all is said and done and you yourself iron out the details, I recommend Act Man's review if you haven't already seen it. Yeah, I could accept that such an egregious name change as slapping a two in front of a non-sequel is an attempt to reinvigorate, but let's not forget the fact that this is, and always will be, as with many 3A titles, the result of a bunch of greedy bastards making decisions inside a box that has no windows. They don't care about the truth (which is why I could but can't accept such a name change so misrepresentative of the reality; if they were decent, they would say "OW _v2_ "); they will always do what they believe is best financially. Unfortunately, when they do so, they forget the cause of their success: us. I say this as an observer, though, taking others' word for it. I'm not an OW player--never have and honestly never will (unless they make the female character models more modest). This is just... insane what new lows that even previously well-respected companies like Nintendo have dropped to (I'm still waiting for my TWWHD Switch port thx).
It's odd that the "standard" that online games are held to is that they must keep changing and evolving forever. Look at TF2, that game barely changes at all nowadays, and I guarantee you that if it weren't for the bot problem, a lack of updates wouldn't even be enough to get people to stop playing the game. It would be sad if we never got a new unlockable weapon ever again, but really, nobody could reasonably act like we're "owed" it, or that we NEED updates like those to keep the game alive. No, the only thing we NEED to keep the game alive is for Valve to stop swimming in their Scrooge money pit and hire some goddamn moderators. I'm not saying it's bad to expect to be able to play a specific game "forever", but what I am saying is that you don't even need constant updates to accomplish that. As long as a multiplayer game is still playable, is fun enough to replay indefinitely, and has enough people to play it with, it can live forever. Here's another great example: SRB2 Kart, which is a kart racer overhaul mod for Sonic Robo Blast 2. I would easily consider SRB2 Kart the kind of game that can be played and enjoyed forever, due in part to the insane modding community. I mean seriously, there's LITERALLY (and I mean literally in the literal sense) over a thousand character pack mods. Hundreds of custom courses, too! And even the base game without any mods is something I would dare to call "better than Mario Kart".

After the massive sexual harassment lawsuit that got them sued by the entire state of California, banning Blitzchung just for saying "Free Hong Kong", and Diablo Immortal winning the award for most amount of predatory microtransactions in a game, I can't ever play another Blizzard game again and will never support them. I think you’re excusing a lot of bad business practices and unkept promises because you enjoy the core gameplay, but even so I respect your opinion, and am glad you find enjoyment in it.
It’s also interesting to hear somebody who doesn’t play a lot of FPS games talk about his thoughts on one. I think I still prefer your content on single player experiences, but this was not a bad video at all.
I definitely feel like the game could use some accessibility options found in other shooters. And the lack of things like gyro aiming & flick stick are especially glaring considering their presence in the likes of Splatoon (for the former) & Fortnite (for both). More so since playing with PC players turns off aim assist.

I never got super into OW1 but I liked what I played. And I liked the tiny bit i played in 2. Coming from Tf2 it's nice to have a game that gets new content and changes, but I never got into big multiplayer games outsides of tf2
I hope they re add loot boxes or a way to grind skins more, besides comp it was the only rewarding thing in the game and now we have to either grind 8 STRAIGHT MONTHS of weekly challenges or to spend $20 for a single skin that used to be free and maybe a week of unlucky boxes and you could buy it

Feels more like a small visual and balancing overhaul with the intigration of a free to play monetization model. At least I can still get into a game and the balancing isn't totally off the rails though them canceling the fleshed out pve killed my motivation to play.

It's not a sequel. It's basically nothing.
I think this is mostly a pretty solid video, but there's just a couple things.

This could've been more comprehensive, significant gameplay changes actually could happen through an update or dlc as well depending on the size of it. Similarly, a single player game can be remade or remastered. It doesn't need to be a new entire series either. All fair but it does self contradict the previous argument of it being the same for the rest of time. It would be smoother to specify for retro titles. Of course the "self contained" games have no updates or dlc, though the point itself could've been made a bit clearer.
Also for "online games don't have that luxury of complacency." I think it's important to note that there isn't complacency for the games that got updates of course, though it's hard to call any games without updates "complacent" when lack of updates or no, we don't know why a game, especially nowadays wouldn't have updates. It could come off as presumptuous. I also think certain multiplayer games don't need updates often as long as they're good games like Team Fortress 2, it barely gets updates now but still has a strong community.
Otherwise, good video and really funny in places.

One thing I find absolutely horrible is how they did the character unlock system. I'd rather have the Paladins system of getting some gold after every match and then unlocking whatever champ you want with that earned gold. What if I wanna play Wrecking Ball? Play 175 matches to unlock the only character I wanted to try? No. I just played exclusively Mercy during the week I played it and let me tell you, solo queuing casual, because you haven't WON 50 MATCHES TO UNLOCK COMPETITIVE YET, as Mercy is worse than hell.
I feel like instead of this being announced as “Overwatch 2” it should have been labeled, “2.0” or something similar along those lines. As nothing really was added or removed that couldn’t just necessitate updating the game itself. By “Rebranding” it into a secondary game (and I mean rebranding) they are essentially implying that their was an Overwatch 1 and they just made a new game entirely as per stated in the video. But indeed that was not the case and just added a massive update to the original game itself.
One example that correlates with this is Destiny. Bungie had made an entirely separate new game called “Destiny 2” and it was indeed a second game. It wasn’t rehashed or rebranded to make it look nicer, but instead gave a whole feel of something new and fresh. And they never took away the original game. You can still go back to this day and play the original Destiny if you so choose.
Now that’s not to say their isn’t anything wrong with creating a massive overhaul for a game through one big update. But that shouldn’t be considered a “second game”. Because it’s not. And I feel like Blizzard would have been ok still had they instead just announced it to be an entire overhaul to the game, (which essentially that’s all it was) instead of branding it into saying that it’s a second game entirely because once again, to make a 2, there needs to be a 1. It’s basic arithmetics. Online games do this all the time. They will refurbish it to make it look better and play better both graphics and gameplay wise but it will still be the same and advertise it as merely a big update overhaul. And it would still be labeled the same thing.
It’s not that I don’t like Overwatch 2, but I agree with the idea that it feels, Incomplete. Now I know part of it is because they took away a good portion of the game, but to do that and called it a “second game” doesn’t feel right. It feels like we’ve instead gone backwards. And that’s what pisses me off most about it. It’s the content, or rather the lack of, that bothers me so much. They took away what made the game exciting for the small bits that it was and didn’t do anything to expand on it. It’s like making 2 types of pizzas except one just doesn’t have meat on it and still costing the same. Technically their different but all you did was take stuff off and didn’t do anything else.

Your criticism of the erasure of overwatch 1 brings to light something I fucking loathe about modern online games. Fear of missing out and intentionally creating lost media and inaccessible content. fortnite is the best example- how many HUNDREDS of hours of work on the part of the developers are now just... gone forever? Imagine working for months on a new season and coding and creating assets for these small playable story segments and then 6 months later, nuked. No one will ever play it again. Why? To encourage people to get anxious and buy the battle pass each season and play as much as possible. It's fucking evil.

I love overwatch and have played it since launch. I just feel like some changes were a little unnecessary as well. Like, the hud and stuff are minimal and clean, with some improvements, but I also feel some of the character and charm was lost or changed. I also miss the loot boxes. You could at least have a chance to get stuff for free, now even old skins have some ridiculous prices! 😮💨😅 I'm gonna have to accept it I guess. I hate that every modern game has the same predatory marketing stuff in them. 😔
Agreed the hud changes were completely unneeded and predatory marketing sucks. It'd have been cool if they would have put a free lootbox in every tenth tier so that the system could still kind of stay in the game and f2ps could get cosmetics but I don't expect any generosity from blizzard.
I'm going to preface this by saying I haven't played Overwatch 2, and I played the original and didn't like it. However, I watched the entire video and I find it interesting that Halo Infinite, another live service FPS had a very similar complaint. It seems to be a trend that live service games feel incomplete because they don't seem pressured to make a great foundational impression on their games.
Although, I do want to say that I think the complaint of a lack of loot boxes is really interesting. I wish that after a few battle passes, live service games like Overwatch and Infinite had lootboxes that you could only earn via gameplay. I don't think it's a good to charge people for lootboxes at all, but using that as an incentive to keep playing the game would still give them the same result of making people want to keep playing, and have returning players wanting to go back. It's surprising to me that they abandoned concepts like these because of how predatory they made the system to get money out of the player, when they could easily tweak those systems to make their newer models seem less predatory in nature.

When all is said and done and you yourself iron out the details, I recommend Act Man's review if you haven't already seen it. Yeah, I could accept that such an egregious name change as slapping a two in front of a non-sequel is an attempt to reinvigorate, but let's not forget the fact that this is, and always will be, as with many 3A titles, the result of a bunch of greedy bastards making decisions inside a box that has no windows. They don't care about the truth (which is why I could but can't accept such a name change so misrepresentative of the reality; if they were decent, they would say "OW _v2_ "); they will always do what they believe is best financially. Unfortunately, when they do so, they forget the cause of their success: us.
I say this as an observer, though, taking others' word for it. I'm not an OW player--never have and honestly never will (unless they make the female character models more modest). This is just... insane what new lows that even previously well-respected companies like Nintendo have dropped to (I'm still waiting for my TWWHD Switch port thx).

It's odd that the "standard" that online games are held to is that they must keep changing and evolving forever. Look at TF2, that game barely changes at all nowadays, and I guarantee you that if it weren't for the bot problem, a lack of updates wouldn't even be enough to get people to stop playing the game. It would be sad if we never got a new unlockable weapon ever again, but really, nobody could reasonably act like we're "owed" it, or that we NEED updates like those to keep the game alive. No, the only thing we NEED to keep the game alive is for Valve to stop swimming in their Scrooge money pit and hire some goddamn moderators. I'm not saying it's bad to expect to be able to play a specific game "forever", but what I am saying is that you don't even need constant updates to accomplish that. As long as a multiplayer game is still playable, is fun enough to replay indefinitely, and has enough people to play it with, it can live forever.
Here's another great example: SRB2 Kart, which is a kart racer overhaul mod for Sonic Robo Blast 2. I would easily consider SRB2 Kart the kind of game that can be played and enjoyed forever, due in part to the insane modding community. I mean seriously, there's LITERALLY (and I mean literally in the literal sense) over a thousand character pack mods. Hundreds of custom courses, too! And even the base game without any mods is something I would dare to call "better than Mario Kart".
