Based on this video review I purchased this tarp with the aluminum poles. Worked great on our car camping trip to the Lincoln National Forest. We set it up over our picnic table and kitchen/cook table. Used the built in tie outs to attach to Douglas Fir tress in our campsite and staked one corner down. With the daily 1 to 2 hour afternoon thunderstorms that are typical of the southwestern US the tarp provided a place to shelter out of the rain and kept our camp kitchen dry. Very impressed with the versatility and performance.
thanks! I just bought one, and then started guilt-shopping around Silpoly and Silnylon tarps at 2x-5x the price point. Given my intro tarp was $30 from an amazon brand, this one is 2ft bigger on each side and looks like it will stand up to those heavy gusts which ripped the amazon one to pieces!
I dig these kinds of tarps, I pulled the trigger on the HENNESSY HEX SYMMETRICAL RAINFLY. Totally light weight and came with attached guy lines and tie downs as well. ( I swapped them out for para cord) But it did hold up to very windy conditions.. As always Aaron great video! Looking forward to the CRKT tomahawk. Take care my friend
I enjoy your videos, and I even bought a Mountainsmith messenger bag on the basis of one of your videos. So please don't think I'm being a troll here. Talking about the lines affixed to the tarp, the term is guy lines, not guide lines, and the "line" is redundant: From the OED "A rope or line fixed to the ground to secure a tent or other structure." So the tarp comes with guys attached. Which is fantastic. If I had a use for a tarp, I'd be buying this one right now. Keep up the good work!
Kelty Noah 12 is very similar with similar price. Where they differ is the number of points. The share has 6 and the noah has 4. Both could be used for a hammock but only the shade could be used as a ground tarp in an A-Frame configuration.
Nice review and a great product. I am looking to use this versatile tarp in the backcountry. I would like to bring it on the sand as well. I would prefer not to take the aluminum poles into the sand that would damage them, etc., but you can get some stakes for sand and get some PVC pipe and put end caps with screws drilled into the two ends and use this tarp at the beach!
Before everyone jumps on this bargain Mountainsmith tarp, there are a few things to be aware of at this time. 1. The tarp seems to have just hit the market, so there has been no real long term testing or evaluation of this tarp, so its durability is unknown at this time. 2. There are zero reviews of this product on Amazon at this time. 3. The reviewer mentioned that it is nylon, but it is actually made of 210T, 68D Polyester Ripstop material with a PU 2000mm coating, which unlike nylon will not stretch when wet, yet not quite as durable as nylon. 4. This tarp uses grommets at the corners, whih tend to pull out over time, instead of just tie outs, whcih are much stronger. 5. This tarp is available for $45, (five dollars less) at Walmart, Overstock, and at the same price at Jet.com, (now owned by Walmart) where you could probably reduce the overall cost by using Jet coupons. By the way, many of us will also have to pay tax at Walmart, and Amazon due to brick and mortar locations in our states, which just raised the cost even more. The reviewer lists the other tarp manufacturers that he has experienced, or has used in the description box, but he does not list probably the best tarp manufacturer out on the market, namely DD Tarp from Great Britain. My recommendations...unless you just really only have $50 to spend, then pass on the Mountainsmith, and instead purchase the DD Tarp XL, and instead of $50 plus tax,, spend $74, (free shipping from the U.K included, and zero sales tax)) and get a superior tarp with 19 super strong tie outs (no weak grommets), 4 x pegs and guy lines included in their own bag, and a stuff sack with drawcord closure. The DD Tarp XL is 10' x 15', so you will actually get a little more aquare footage in coverage, and the DD Tarp XL is made from 190T polyester with PU 3000mm waterproof coating, (not a PU 2000 mm Coating) and has a taped central seam. You can also purcahse the DD Tarp XL in Olive Green, or Coyote, instead of standing out like a sore thumb withat Mountainsmith International (please come save me) Orange! A MC (Multi-Cam) version is available for around ten dollars more. $45 to $50 is not a bad price, but I would spend a slight bit more, for what I perceive to be a better long term value.
I just bought this tarp and the advertised weight is completely bs, and it's actually 2.75lb (44 oz) vs the 1.9 lb (30 oz) claimed packed weight. That's 144% of the claimed weight and that extra 14 oz is a big deal when backpacking. So many of these companies get away with completely bogus claims because people, even reviewers don't verify. Shameful.
I saw your video and probably only video review for this tarp I bought this on boxing week in canada good tarp BUUUUT............total weight of this tarp is 1.2kg not 0.8 kg as you mention and also on moutainsmith site I email them about this but no reply the tarp itself with attached guylines is slightly more than 1kg
Yeah it's shameful I bought this and it weighs 2.75 lb all packed, vs the claimed 1.9 lb. 144% of the claimed weight. Emailed them and also go no reply. Just another dishonest company.

I love your reviews, Very informative. Have you ever reviewed the glock 78 or 81? The knives glock produce for around $30. I'd love to get your opinion on those.
What is the length between the two tie-out points parallel to the ridgeline? I'm trying to figured out the depth of the catenary cut on the side panel.
No offense but there are a dozen tarps much better than this from cottage folks like Warbonnet, Wilderness Logics, UGQ, and OES if you can actually get ahold of him. This is overly heavy, the giant seam above the cat cut is unnecessary and most of these folks tarps can be had in silny or silpoly.

I just bought this from Sierra for $40, and I'm glad I did:) You and your sidekick did a great review:)
Thanks so much. It’s a great tarp for the price and I’m still using it to this day.

5 Angels thanks, he is awesome
How would you compare this tarp to the Kelty 12x12 - curious based on your knowledge.
Kelty Noah 12 is very similar with similar price. Where they differ is the number of points. The share has 6 and the noah has 4. Both could be used for a hammock but only the shade could be used as a ground tarp in an A-Frame configuration.

I'm going to check that one out too. Thanks. I have 6 packs to equip so collecting a bit of gear. I had never heard of DD Tarps either.
Seems pretty cool. Would have bought it right now if OD green option. :(
I prefer a traditional square tarp... but food vid and good product
I believe the kids these days would call this dank and on fleek. Pretty sweet as I say, definitely great when hitting the beach.
Nice tarp and great review. Can you review an RMJ tomahawk?
looks good for hammock cover

Good lookin tarp
do you think this could potentially be used in the sand?
I doubt it. the pegs wouldn't stick in the sand
seedlesspapaya they do make snow and sand stakes but it would be tricky
It is very heavy
Nutnfancy ?
