- I've been hearing a lot of talk about VPNs in Warzone and many people claim that they can be used to get around the Skill Based Matchmaking system to get significantly easier lobbies. Today I wanted to put these claims to the test for myself and share the results with you guys. What did you think of the results of my tests and what are your thoughts on people using VPNs in Warzone?

Everybody starts using vpns, Africa becomes the sweatiest lobby in the planet.
The trick is if it’s done right you still play on the same server it just breaks the matchmaking

Reality is it’s actually tough to find lobbies in Africa - during peak times we can find 30/60ms ping but unless you’re willing to wait for 15/20mins to find a game - you generally play 180/230ms ping games - European and Middle East servers.
@@jamesmulligan2741 I think the way that the matchmaker chooses your lobbies is by looking at your Skill/KD and then your connection. But if your connection is poor (by using a VPN), then the matchmaker tunes down your SBMM and prioritises ping instead.

I like how some streamers get a lot of foreign deathcoms.
I'm Brazilian and we are surrounded by spanish peaple and i dont hear so much spanish deathcoms, but streamers in US are getting german, african, even Australian deathcoms . It's fishy.
I was wondering that too. I have YET to hear a foreign death com in the US, but streamers constantly get em. Soo much for those good games of theirs lol
I'm from Canada and the easier lobbies always end up having a majority of Spanish death coms
I’m from Russia and most deathcoms are European. And if I stay up late enough playing the game I’m literally traveling from Eastern to Western Europe with each passing hour
@@Briggsian yeah I noticed that too - I'm from Ontario. Which its really weird considering Canada and the US share the same servers, yet it seems like all the time on Warzone, everybody I'm matched with doesn't speak english. Yet when I get into core modes - its usually english or french. Zombies I usually get the no mic kids - which is great. Just silence, peace and zombie killing. Aside from the odd game I do get players with mics - usually a group of hicks who need a 4th when they could just play zombies with a party of 3. But Warzone its always spanish dudes - but the kids always scream slurs in english, so its weird.
I am from the US and I have heard spanish, and a few other languages that I wouldn't know how to describe a few times. I have over a 2.0 K/D for what it's worth.

Right? Game will be running perfectly smooth and then you get into a gun fight and everything freezes. Just another reason I only play zombies anymore. I miss killing actual players but with all the cheating, lagging, and black Roze skins it's not worth it anymore
There is also skill based timed out. I went into search and destroy lobbies in Cold War, and when I do really well like 20-3, I get kicked out of the game.

It's sad that this is even a thing. It's even sadder that you can't play with mixed skill friends, have a good connection, and have FUN.
Most of the people I play with are low kd. Like .1 .3 and .5 and I'm 1.3 which is such a gap that it makes it difficult for them when they play with me.
As SBMM isn't enough... They further nerf you by making you lag as well.. SMH.
Activision are the worst. Idk what happened though, they used to make the best. Now they make you lag on purpose

I stopped playing cod after this. I am done trying to get better, just to have SBMM punish me. DBD has been a lot of fun

Nothing wrong w canada. Ace at one time temporarily moved to i think norway to live with his GF at the time. He has been back in canada for awhile now as ace and enya are no longer together.

After playing cod for the last 12-13 years I decided to not buy Cold War. While I miss having a fast shooter to play, I totally made the right decision.
Looking forward to what the next battlefield brings!
Hope all sweats move to Battlefield, maybe that way CoD will be enjoyable again. It is just about time until they found out sweating makes games unplayable, it doesn't matter what game they're playing
I live in North Western EU and I was playing with my buddies (1.09 team kd) during peak hours. We all have solid connections. We had 8 lobbies in a row that were all 1.25 kd or higher.. we can't really play any other time, cause, you know.. we have jobs.. but this was not what you would call a fun experience.

Same here, the other day, I played with my buddies, I have a KD of 1.65, they have 1.1, 1.2 and 1.5... and we only get lobby over 1.1, most of them being over 1.2.
We played like 20 games, and ONLY once.. we got a 0.93 KD game. We ended up winning that one. Our only win.
Then, just for fun, I compared it to the games of the group of Tfue, Sympfuny, etc.. They all have over 4 or 5 kd.. and they get lobbies that are 0.8, 1.0.. and some times, they get a 1.1 or 1.2.
Something is really fishy.
I will not mind playing hard lobbies if there was a ranked mode... But sometimes.. You just want to have a bit of fun, play without thinking too much.. Try some off meta weapons that are obvioulsy weaker.. etc.. and that's impossible in the current state of the game, because you meet full swet roze teams with CR56 all the time.

Same, we have a big skill gap on our team but, the lower skilled player is quite uncoordinated. Squad average ends up at 0.8 but because our best player is too good, we constantly end up in 1.1+ lobbies. Makes it quite painful for our lower skilled friend who really has no chance at all against a lobby of roze try hards. SBMM essentially means we can’t all have fun together.
same for me, but my buddy got a vpn and lobbies went from 1.2-1.3 range to 0.7-1.0 range lol

It depends where you live and where the server is located
The game cares not for your lag if it can find people to give you a loss when it wants to, I live in the center of America where id have good connection to all the North American servers and the game still puts me in 80-100 ping lobbies because it knows the players there will give me a hard time unless I sweat.
Tricking the sbmm would absolutely result in better connection because if it thinks it cant get a playable lobby that will challenge you it'll stick you into a local one that has less latency
It’s pretty obvious when you’re watching certain Warzone streamers and every single death com is someone speaking in Spanish. It’s not a coincidence.

I will die on the hill that sbmm would be fine if it was transparent and told us where we were at. Basically like every other ranked mode ever.
I think everyone should do this, the more people that try to beat SBMM will really show Activision and other game devs how much we hate it.

They won't get rid of SBMM it keep people playing. Everyone seems to have the wrong idea of old CODs, we were the after school glitch spot sweats. Casuals played when it first came out then at Christmas then stopped
The thing about sbmm getting you a bad connexion is true. I'm a 2.8 k/d player, usually when i don't play for a long period and comeback to the game i usually get arround 50 ping with kind of easy lobbies, but as soon as i get a win or a high kill game, my ping is increasing to 70 80 with much more difficult lobbies . This Sbmm is literally ruining our experience and i'm sure that as soon as a big game will come out warzone will be pushed away .

I'm from Germany. If I play badly, I get a good ping and play on servers against players from my country or against other Europeans.
If I play tactically, aim well with my gun, move quickly on the map, use cover, shoot in the head and throw grenades into the sparwn of my opponent, my ping is increased every round and I wait 10 minutes for a new game .
Often times I get a server in America, Australia or Asia and a ping from 100 to 300.
Now any beginner can kill me with server advantage
before I can see him.
But I play against other good players and only have bad ones on my team.
Actions are lost and the game no longer feels smooth.
If I have a good start and it is 20 to 0 for me. All opponents always wake up in my area, so that I only get 1 KD at the end of the game.
Too bad, Modern Warfare was a lot of fun at the beginning. Today the situation and high ping are poison for me.
I'm looking forward to Battlefield and I'm saddened by COD's development. 🤷

This why I didn't buy Cold War. People need to vote with their wallet. If you still really want the single player portion game then resort to good ol pirate bay or, if you're a console gamer, buy it used

If you get shit connections, there are 3 reasons...
1) you have bad connection
2) you found a garbage server
3) your region doesn't have enough players
sbmm plays no role in any of those reasons.
And if you are in a region like the Middle East, you can expect to have garbage connections in barely populated gamemodes and times. At night they usually connect to european servers, regardless of skill...
Btw, you posted a video about CW. The same people who did that test actually said themselves that this is not the case in MW/WZ..........
And even in CW, absolutely non-issue. I have a complete shit connection in that game on my own account (6+ kd) and on my friend's account who is somewhere around a 2kd. But that is the netcode being bad, not the game somehow deciding something on the fly

Ace, did you see any difference between queue times when the vpn was on/off?
The last couple weeks I also noticed a tiny but perceivable lag in my controller inputs to game- noticeable in my slide cancelling for example. So this video especially the connection points related to sbmm really makes sense to me. Playing the game in plunder is much smoother then when I play in BR.
I can’t play br modes every time I get on I’m always lagging but plunder runs smoothly tho I hate it.

I did multiple tests. It works. You need to change location sometimes to get easier lobbies.
You can get multiple bronze 4 lobbies up to ~3PM. Then Silver/Gold.
For your problem with stuttering - block far datacenters IP range in firewall/router.

Ace, I’ve tried to stream WZ and encountered major stuttering/rubberbanding as well. By the third game, I had been dropped into a bronze lobby and got 13 kills where my average is around 3 or 4. I would be highly interested in further testing if VPNs would be a solution to connection problems while streaming.
Ace you should do a video chronicling your experience playing on a good pc as opposed to playing on console. I'd love to know how much having a top tier operating system changes things.
Thank you for testing the “connection” part on WarZone. I get same issues as you with stuttering/rubber banding and other connection issues when playing BR. I noticed if you play Rebirth there is no connection issues. Please do more testing and let us know. It is so frustrating at times playing BR when there is connection issues randomly.
Rebirth also lacks SBMM, so it seems reasonable that SBMM is the problem.
I was playing warzone and I have weak internet connection so my game stutters and lags a lot but what I’ve noticed is that when I hop into a plunder match it significantly reduces the amount of stutters that happen and honestly just runs smoother and I didn’t know why

Excellent testing and video! Personally I think if the matchmaking is sacrificing connection to get you in a better skill match, there's no issue with doing anything to get your best connection. To me this is essentially the same as doing something with your home network to get a better connection like using Ethernet vs wifi. If money is on the line though, the playing field should be even.
I have been lagging since last 3 weeks even though I have my ps5 connected directly through LAN and now I kind of agree with Ace that it is because of SBMM

That could explain why I’ve started to notice stutters and lag when playing BR. I play on PC, a newly built one at that and my KD is at about a 1.9. I’ve thought maybe it was my machine but now I’m starting to think it’s the game. Interesting video 🤙🏽

latency in plunder is always 50-90 for me. in any LTM or BR mode, my ping can range from 70 to 250ms.

Warzone lags way too much i got packet loss almost every game just for having a 1.8kd.. Some times when i aim at someone my guy starts teleporting.. Plunder is still fun tho and multi
I live in California and there are quite a few CA servers but when I play, the ping is great, around 30-40 but I always have packet loss. I never get packet loss in any server outside of California. The game makes no sense and packet loss makes the game unplayable even if it is only 1-3 percent.
I've struggled with the stutters/banding thing in solos myself, but almost never in team BR modes or in plunder.
Dude, the lag from SBMM is so annoying if that's true! I feel like my connection is getting worse, the more games I play... I am looking forward to see more detailed analysis of this correlation with connection and SBMM.
Does playing in California and linking up with friends on the east(nyc) have an affect on connection, lag, etc? Cause when i play alone game runs fine, but when i link up it starts to lag, jittery etc..sometimes kicke me or someone out with lost connection error.

Can you VPN into a Playstation only lobby as a CPU player? Evertime that I play on my Playstation with crossplay off, it seems way sweatier than with crossplay turned on and play against Xbox and CPU. There seems to be a lot of 360 trickshots, bunny hopping, and laying down while shooting in the Playstation only lobbies and make me wonder if CPU players are getting into the Playstation only lobbies.
I tried experimenting with a VPN after finding out who the provider is and I have played in multiple bot lobbies. I have now dropped 20 bombs over 10 times and finally my lobbies are starting to look like pro streamers lobbies. I would definitely say that the vpn does tap into bot lobbies and is very affective.

Can descripencies also be because of the general performance of the lobbies before? Example is sampling the 3 lobbies without the vpn and then 3 with after and the performance being lets say "worse" before the 3 with the vpn
Also, this Plunder vs Warzone thing has happened to me since day 1. The Desynch in the gulag was so bad that I, on a routine basis, on tested bloat free 5ms level east coast fiber optic pings, could not even change directions or move for 500 to 1000 ms lockup windows on an every game basis. After months, with plunder running fine ( I could routinely win plunder solo with 20+ kill level games) I stopped trying.

Why is it that when I play plunder( which I only used it to level up weapons and get a feel for them) it seems easier than regular BR?
Me and 2 others cant find any match with our VPNs on Warzone since yesterday. On reddit others happen to say that aswell.
We get in a pre game lobby (just us) -> loading level -> then it researches and this is looping the whole time, till we get in a lobby with 9 or 15 players -> loading screen -> getting disconnected from the servers.
Does VPN still work? Without it, it just works fine.

I have a burning question about distance to server...I have a great connection, always ping under 60 and FPS over 100...but I feel like my shots don't register. Can distance to server affect hit registering even with good ping and FPS?? I'm in Canada East and the closest server is America Central if i'm not mistaken. Most "pros" (consistently good players hitting most shots even snipes on moving targets) I know are practically sitting on the server, US or EU.
It's clear as day when people like swagg tfue and all them get 80 kill squads kill games like nothing. Lol I'm here with 1.50 kd and get cheaters everday and all black rose skins high levels. Swagg and all these streamers rarely see cheaters and face lower levels then me with lower kds then them which makes zero since. They have 5 kds. Lol
As long as these kids keep watching them they're making money off cheating and they'll continue. Activision likes the attention so they ignore it but if this cheating affected their bottom line it would be stopped immediately. Oh I hope battlefield is good because we seriously need to abandon everything activision, especially cod

From the same province as you ace & I experience the exact same stutters. If i back out ill get a 40ms game but it takes like 10-15 tries.

Thx mate. High class as usual. As for your experience of better connection when using VPN, isnt that (likely) just a result of sbmm going soft on you - as you (and The Gang) have shown earlier. High Skill Player = harder lobbies + worse connection. And vice verca.

It's not really that you can disable sbmm using a vpn its just there's a smaller player pool in other continents, so its not going to search long enough to match you with similar KD
have you tried using nordvpn? using their servers actually effect my ping significantly. im on ps4 and from malaysia. if i connect to a us server ill get 199 ping... And showing the ingame geographical location doesnt work. i can connect to servers in eu and us and still it shows im in malaysia
I'd love to see the stats guys go deeper then SBMM and find out if there are any randomness mechanics at play in the game as-well as if buying micro transactions has an effect on a players experience.
While I may sound like a conspiracy theorist, my recent experiences with CoD increasingly make me believe SBMM is but the tip of the ice berg in regards to what is really going on under the hood.

Activision has tons of patents for micro transaction and SBMM.. One of them, is to try to put yourself in lobbies with people that don't have the skins you have so you can "show off" to try to influence people to buy them too.
So, if you buy a skin that nobodies has.. They will try to put you with people that don't have that particular skin, to influence them to buy them too... And as new or low player or people that don't play often don't have much skins.. You have higher chances to be put with them in the same lobbies.
i use a vpn purely for better connection, fsr my ping spike up in the 900s really often unless i use my vpn, i really dont know whats up with that
here’s a fun task for you xclusive , you should make a test using a netdooma router using the geo filter mode and compare to the vpn ! i think what you’ll find is interesting

You did the VPN after the first run of low placing games. My lobbies decline after a run of bad placements. They also increase after a win or top ten placement. Does look like there is a correlation with a VPN though.

Which vpn has he used or which vpn that he has mentioned that doesnt fully send packages just tricks the matchmaking?
I tried expressvpn and the pings when connecting via other parts of the world are too high. And sometimes you cannot even connect to a game.

So basically, a VPN turns the matchmaking system back to how it was in the older CoD games; connection over skill
no it doesnt...trust me..doesnt matter your location or ping.performance is all that matters..no one cares if your performance was made in africa or mars

And as I wrote in another comment, my buddy got a vpn few days ago and our lobbies went from 1.2-1.3 to 0.7-1.0 while ping remained the same...
@@djomla9999 look ,I can't convince you.ive been testing vpn both on console and pc for weeks.Ace tested it on 15 matches in total.Ive tested it on over a hundred matches.Dont fall for this.Isnt true.if you live in UK the vpn will show you an Italian ip.As you can understand by changing country your ping will go higher.There are certain servers in the world regarding cw .You can't achieve better ping.Go to expressvpn online chat and they will confirm you this,if you don't believe me.
Sbmm as we all know actually is performance base matchmaking.Thus it considers your performance.Even if vpn helps you in some matches,eventually the sbmm will match you in more difficult lobbies.It doesn't care in which region you did good.
The only thing I have to admit is the lag compensation.So.even if I had 180ms ping I was playing just fine.Which is weird.

Well if you constantly end up in a bad place, sbmm would try to give you easier lobbies so that you can enjoy the game. You should consider your placements in those first 5 matches. It might aswell be a move from SBMM to give you easier lobbies.

I side with you on the tournament ruling. I run a VPN because for some reason when I host a game or play solo's i get packet loss and the VPN I have helps make the game playable. Im not ashamed to admit it because Im trying to play the game and have fun. Doesn't matter your skill level, if you are lagging and losing gun fights because of it theres no way you're having fun.

Lately I keep getting thrown into these ridiculous lobbies in MW2 that have a ping upwards of 100 at times. My KD isnt even that great, it’s 1.6 (camo grinding for those launchers and melee weapons kinda screwed me), and I can deal playing with good players but not excessive lag.

I doubt he'll answer but I'm using NOLAG VPN and the lobby's seem easier even tho ill still get some sweats. i am thinking about trying SBMMOFF VPN which is 60$ for lifetime membership compared to any other VPN that has monthly subscriptions. F SBMM!
Everytime I am consistently doing well in warzone my ping gets worse and worse. When I drop donuts or go negative for a few games my ping gets lower and lower.
In the thumbnail a 1.35 KD is a diamond lobby mine is 2.0 something and I don't play much wz am I wrong please clear this up for me 🤔🤔🤐

This just proves how dumb SBMM is. It exists because Activision want lower skilled players to have fun against non-sweats (so they spend more money obviously) but if there’s a loophole to put those sweats and higher skilled players with them anyways, then it’s just useless.

It was always clear to me that SBMM sacrifices connection. I know 30ms lobbies exist around me, and ive play in them quite a bit every now and then. But after 3 or 4 matches, i always seem to connect to 140-160ms lobbies. No matter how much i re-queue, i always get those high-ping lobbies. Keep in mind, i’m queuing in solos and duos *alone*. No party members. So yeah, SBMM definitely gives connection, and the playerbase, the finger.
