This clip is from QI Series B, Episode 12, 'Birth' with Stephen Fry, Alan Davies, Rich Hall, Phill Jupitus and Mark Steel.
Whenever QI decides to wrap up, I hope Alan hosts the final series with Sandi and Stephen as the permanent panelists
Series "Z", presumably.
(Unless they want to be really nerdy and include a series on numbers and symbols too.)
@@klaxoncow Series ϑ
@@klaxoncow kind of wish fry stuck it out to the end
Oh my word yes
@@djimma5080 well he did have health problems to deal with
Alan's hair is my best clue to how old the clips are.
I do the exact same. Everyone on the 8OO10CDC always refers to which dress Rachel Riley is wearing, well we have Alan's hair haha
@@DizzNutt93 i just want to say fuck you for making me decipher "8OO10CDC". So what it only took 10 seconds BUT STILL
Another way of telling, albiet not entirely helpful, is the screens. If they have those metal fences in front of them, it’s one of the first two seasons, I believe. MAYBE the third, but I’m not entirely sure on that.
If Stephen has cards with the wrong answers on as well, it’s the first season.
I wish the early episodes were more widely available , I have run thru all that stream on Prime several times. Alans face and hair ARE the great timestamp.
@@DizzNutt93 That's a pretty bad way to work it out. "Ah yes, this episode is X years old because she's wearing this incredibly short and tight dress, as opposed to the other incredibly short and tight dress from another episode."
Stephen Fry getting the football question and not the states of matter one is my favorite thing.
I mean, it's scripted...
The States of Matter are still being debated.
He's a huge footie fan and even spent a while working as one of the directors of a team. And as has already been said, it's scripted.
I mean Stephen is a Norwich City supporter. He's not entirely out of the loop.
He gets very carried away watching Norwich play. Lots of "Ooh's" and "ahh's". 😂
Notice how casually and sneaky Alan browse trough the "cards of answers" after he interrogated Stephen. The cheeky bastard.
On and you wouldn't 🤔😀
Alan's acting when Stephen "surprises" him with swapping roles is really impressive, I was completely sold until he pulled out his list of questions.
"You think it's easy for me, do you?" was the point it was obviously scripted and they were gonna swap.
@@Ranger1812 the fact that they got the pictures up behind them gave it away quickly
Well, he did do 5 seasons of Jonathan Creek, you know.
Yea what a letdown
@@Ranger1812 yes it wasn't like they were trying to hide it
When will Stephen Fry return as a guest? That is the question.
@Richard Hopkins Well if he doesn't at some point - at least as a guest, I'll eat my hat. * Note to self: Get chocolate hat.
He won't come back. And neither should he.
@@zapkvr Course he should.
@@Ranger1812 yeah, no he shouldn't.
@@zapkvr Course he should. He was popular, and did tons of shows as the host. Makes sense he'd come back as a guest.
Alan is so charming just here.
What
@@tomsharpe2251 Alan struggling to get one up on Stephen is charming. Although Stephen is reading the questions and answers, he himself knows a great many things, including quotes from Oscar Wilde and the Lord’s Prayer in Latin.

@Evolution is evident extinction is inevitable speak plainly mate
missed the "Fry, Cambridge!" from phil
"Ohhh... Yeah, that's true."
That's a sentence I imagine anyone who argues with Stephen utters... right near the end.
The sound of Abject Defeat.
And the end isn't much distance from the beginning.
Phill Jupitus’ mocking voice never ceases to entertain me!
2:22 "Oh hullo" observed to express surprise (as still commonly used)
If you live in a detective novel!
@@TxWIll You beast, you beast, you utter utter beast!
I remember that episode! :)
I was expecting a blue whale question for Stephen LOL
How many moons does the Earth have?
What do they say of the Acropolis where the Parthenon is?
@@barbarajoseph-adam8337 That it has *No... Straight... Lines!*
You could see Alan's shaking when pulling up his questions and reading it to Stephen. It's adorable (。・ω・。)
I'd love to see this happen again, with Stephen and Sandi as "guests"
Poor Alan, never gets an easy life on this show.
This was the bit that made me fall in love with Alan.
Aww, Alan's defeated face at the end.
'You think it's easy for me do you?'
He may have put Alan in his place (no pun intended), but for Stephen it's definitely easier
As long as the question is not about the acropolis where the Parthenon is
Certainly is now.
@@muskatDR *What do they say* _what do they say_
It's always easier when you have enough brain cells to fill 'the Acropolis where the Parthenon is.' ; )
It's easier for Stephen because he's spent a lot of time acquiring his knowledge. Essentially, the easiness comes from years and years of alertness and education. So it was a long process. A lot of work.
Alan's face and entire body language when he realised no choice this Is happening was brilliant 😂😂😂
I don't know a thing about Alan Davies except that he causes me to break out in laughter with the simplest segments.
I do love Phil Jupitus when he does his Stephen Fry impressions.
🤣🤣🤣
Everyone knows there’s only 5 states of matter. Solid, Liquid, Solidus, Naked and Venom
I don't know which was more sad
Alan's "aoh" when Stephen got the plughole question right, or the fact that Stephen has tried pushing his bath water around.
Definitely the best show to ever exist.
This show always makes me happy.
Now why wasn't one of the questions "What do they say of the Acropolis where the Parthenon is?
"
I think we all know the answer to that one don't we? "There are no straight.......
..
@@U2QuoZepplin Hosts of QI!
Poor Alan was so disappointed that Stephen got that football question correct!
I always loved how disappointed Alan looked when Stephen got the bathwater question.
didn't Alan say: "Oh Fry, you idiot" in this bit?
Yeah, they cut half of it out.
@@A9132robotwars what a bunch of butchers
There’s also the bit where Phil pretends he’s hosting University Challenge: “Fry, Cambridge!”
Yeah cause wasn't there a question about penguins
@@pjabrony8280 i thought that was a reference to when the buzzers called out their last name and school on qi
"(David) Mitchell, Cambridge!"
This makes me respect Frye even more. When he rattles off anecdotes, apparently this is not a result of him having extensively researched each topic before the show. He just knows all that stuff.
Pretty sure it's a mixture.
The amount of information he (and now Sandi) have to juggle while hosting is incredible, he's got a voice in his ear, the cards, a teleprompter, Alan and three other guests but ultimately they make the call about what is said, shared and responded to
Proof that Fry is the GOAT
@Richard Hopkins you wish Stephen is and always will be best
Except Sandi is better.
Sandi does have her place, but Stephen’s know-it-all-ism air of superiority can’t be matched
@Richard Hopkins sandy better ? Yeah at beeing a totally annoying host. She cant back her arrogance up with knowledge like Stephen did. Besides she is just not funny.
Oh you mean Sandy ? Yeah your right, you just got the names a bit mixed up. Sandy cant even stand in Stephens shadow. She is charlatan. Her accent is already debunked. Everything about her is fake. I grant that the shoes of Stephen were hard to fill. And she does a " alright " job compaired to other real comedians that could replace him. But please she isnt the second coming. She is just that, a replacement. Second. Not even close to the real thing.
I always try to pick a new video before Sandi comes on and says “Well please, pick something!” because I feel like she’s mad at me for my indecision, lol.
Yeah same
Q: Which way does water flow in a plug hole in the northern hemisphere?
A: Down.
I still think it would be awesome to see Stephen as a guest with Sandi as host.
this brought me so much joy
Well well well, how the turntables...
How the tables have tabled
How dizzy you get...when you turn the tables!
This has highschool match energy, When you talk smack about the teachers handwriting on the whiteboard and then they make you finish the rest of the equation in front of the whole class hahahah xD
Yes it was all set up and all a joke, but Alan's hands are actually shaking for the first few questions.
GIJ GIJ - most definitely!
No professional actor of Alan's extensive experience could possibly fake 'the shakes'.
@@trueaussie9230 😊
This is like when the teacher says “Would you like to come up and teach?”
Please QI is the best show and such a comfort for me
my favourite part, when Stephen fry said about servants and masters swapping roles for christmas.
I love Alan so much!
Oh man, I can't really watch old QI since I'm in the US, so I'd never seen this clip before. This is great!
Surely they show it on BBC America?
They should have alan host once a year
It would be nice to see him do this more often (taking nothing away from Sandi!)
It's a tradition of Christmas time... the servants to be served by the master..🤣🤣
Why did Alan and Stephen make it sounds as if Alan was a Villa fan when they were answering the question? Alan's an Arsenal season ticket holder. Maybe I picked them up wrong
Random football knowledge
I didn’t know Fry was a water bender. 😂

This is priceless
Oh how the turntables...
Oh that face as he mutters "this isn't gunna work"
All the other panelists were enjoying this. Alan was having a blast.
Alan's body language suggests his initial internal reaction was "Is this a trap?"
One of the best clips ever!
For the trivia folk out there . . . as of mid 2021 we have discovered a 7th state of matter, the rather sci-fi sounding 'time crystal' (like a Bose Einstein condensate, a condensed matter state).
One of QI's funniest bits ever! 🤣🤣🤣
Alan looks so young here.
The best bit about this for me whas when alan asked about the states of matter i said seven expecting stephen fry to do the same and the claxons to go off.
They need to do this with Sandi and Alan.
Haha love he kept picking Stephen
I can't believe Alan didn't make one of the questions have the answer of "a Blue Whale".
2:07 Wolfgang the Acropolis (where the parthenon is)?
I never expected Stephen to know so much about Football. 😂🤣😂
I'd prefer Alan to take over QAnon, they might make sense once in a while.
I'd join a cult if Alan Davies was the leader.

Qinon? Qui, non? Mais oui, moisouir...
I had the most fun in this one
The thing that always got me about this is, as the host on a show with no prizes, Stephen would have read the questions in rehearsal.
But maybe not the answers in detail?
You don't think this was spontaneous do you?
@@ismayb754 I think most of the show is spontaneous as far what the panelists do, but I'd expect the host to look at the questions first so he can make sure to get the facts and pronunciations correct.
@@Fairfieldfencer No, I mean the whole "bit" with Stephen and Alan swapping chairs. It was completely planned.
Alan pulled out a different set of questions.
Wonderful...! 🎄😂🥰
I got a question right which Stephen didn’t…..I never thought I’d see the day 🤣🤣😉☮️ Stephen didn’t look very comfortable with wrong answers. 🙈
Freebird H - and Stephen wasn't acting!
It was all 'real', certainly not done for comic effect.
Mr. Davies has always been the host...
Dammit they missed the last bit out!!!!!!!! Where Phil Jupitus goes "Fry, Cambridge!"
"Filamen-t". Well fryed, Alan!
This just did happen at school. Multiple times
I miss Stephen. I have warmed to Sandi, but it's not the same.
When your plans for revenge go terribly awry! Poor Alan, Stephen can’t help being a know it all.
2:01 Doesn't Allan look a bit like High Laurie?
Fry is Mr Know it All...🤓🥴😂😂😂
How many moons are orbiting the earth, Stephen. HOW MANY MOONS.
Amadeus is Latin for Gottlieb
Also, supercritical fluid, superfluid, electron degenerate matter, neutron degenerate matter, quark-gluon plasma, time crystal, possibly strange matter and quark matter.
I think the swapping of roles is a saturnalia tradition not really Christmas, he's that correct?
qanda is the best
0:54 I guess Stephen used "Hullo" here...
To Stephen's point, toilets flow whichever way the designers make it flow.
Fry, Cambridge!
Aw... yeah, that's true...
this was obviously all scripted and rehearsed but adorable none the less. I forgot they're both actors.
Aston Villa question, Stephen refered to them as "your" team to Alan. Isn't he a long time Arsenal fan?
He should've asked how many moons does the Earth have, or "What do they say of the Acropolis where the Parthenon is?"
Seeing as Phil was Stephen's team mate, perhaps Alan could ask if the Sun is actually really there or not.
The direction water goes in a toilet is...
DOWN.
To be fair, I had not realized there were more than 4 states of matter either.
But its been a little since I've been in school.
still wouldn't have learnt it in school, i graduated last year and we also only learnt about 5 of the 6.
SmarterEveryDay did a video about water spinning with another youtubes in the southern hemisphere. The earth's rotation does in fact impart a 'spin' on the water, but your toilet and bathtub dont much give a damn because its so minor.
Saturnalia
And the fact they look 20 years younger?
Ah, yes, you can make the water go down the plughole in the opposite direction, but eventually, it will stop and return to the "correct" rotation.
That last bit was just
Draining.
There's actually 19 states of matter if you take in consideration for the non-classical ones.
Well please come on, pick something.
Water going down the drain is not on a large enough scale to be subject to the Coriolis effect.
So I didn't catch it: what WAS Mozart's middle name?
Wolfgang
"theophilus", which is basically just the greek version of latin "amadeus" or german "gottlieb" (all meaning "godly love" or "loved by god") if i remember correctly
