Paul, thanks for having me on the channel, brother. A great conversation and new friendship in the making. What's better than that?? I'll do a community post to send our folks your way. Have a blessed weekend.
This is really something: I follow PVK since like 2018, right? And this morning I want to listen to a podast, so I hit the YT home page, and see a PVK video with "Fractal Dads" in the title, which is hilarious, so I listen. I have never heard of this guest, but some minutes in he says he made the Keynes and Hayek videos. WHAT THE HECK. My dad was an econ prof. We listened to the Scott Brick Atlas Shrugged audio book as a family. He loved the Keynes and Hayek raps, and showed them to his students. To this day I randomly hear lyrics from those videos in my head. Dad also showed the raps to some people at church, but they don't like economics, so they didn't quite take to it. Also didn't know that Papola is in Austin, where I moved a few years ago. This video made my day.
I found out about you through Jordan Peterson's latest convo with Vervaeke where Jordan mentioned your name along with Jonathan Pageau's, saying you were all three doing smth similar. I was already following their channels so I decided to checkout your channel and was pleasantly surprised. I find your channel to be a particularly friendly and engaging place to cultivate wisdom (borrowing Vervaekes vocab here)👍 Plus the Freddie and Paul show is a rarity :p
Great conversation! I don't know what have I taken from it yet, but being a roman catholic myself, I always like when you interview other catholics ^^ ... How long before seeing John popping on Grim's channel?
Paul, my interests came together. The Keynes vs. Hayek video lyrics play in a loop much of the time in my consciousness given my interest in economics. To see and hear you in conversation. Wow!
Two things. One, welcome to the space, John, you have great content. Two, I’m starting to see what I’m almost certain are bots in this comment section and I’m not sure what to think.
This was a great conversation - I hope PVK and John (another "J" added to the collection of TLC celebrities!) continue building their friendship and conversations.
"The kids are not allright" -- turns out that every time we said "the kids will be allright", we were probably wrong. We need to rethink: - Dads not in the home (divorce) - Moms not in the home (careerist mothers) - Women not being moms at all (again, careerist women) - Dads and moms not being together (divorce again, but also non-traditional "families") We have not solved these problems, not because the solutions to these problems will be "something new". We have not solved these problems, because the solutions are something traditional, that we are no longer allowed to talk about, much less implement.
It's aware of humanity in a way that other shows about the life of Christ aren't. In others, Christ is too ethereal, and his disciples are to well-behaved. In this one, the regular people are all about as much of a mess as you'd expect, and the most remarkable thing about Jesus is that He seems to know what's going on, how this story goes, how everything can actually work, in ways that they simply don't. It's a great interpretation of what "with authority" means.
@@williambranch4283 Having someone play Jesus with a certain amount of charisma and charm, seems to me to make a lot of sense. I've heard more than one person review the series saying, "I know what comes next, and I like this guy too much to want to watch him suffer like he's going to suffer." Making Jesus too otherworldly in the first place, gets in the way of this human connection. It's neat to see that they're not making that mistake.
Paul reminds me of Tom Green (the comedian), especially with regards to being silly, being a pioneer, being amoung misfits, and being tech savvy :) They also look a little alike ^.^
I found you because you're having a conversation about George McDonald. I was trying to learn more about him because he came up in CS Lewis and he came up in John Eldridge. And I figured, I like them, so I'll probably like him.

"I love humans and I like to reduce poverty" I was on board with that for a long time. But as a Greek, going deeper into my Greek Orthodox faith in the last two years after being an atheist for 55 years, I think: hang on a minute! What happended to the story of Jesus and the young ruler? Look around you and you will see affluence, complacency, aversion to normal life struggles like commiting to another person and building a family, dropping fertility rates. Material posessions and childlessness seem correlated. Is there causation? I strongly believe so. Please, leave the poor people in Africa alone if you care about humanity's future. Niger, Nigeria, Mali, Angola, Chad, Somalia and Uganda all have fertility rates above 5 children per women. Don't spoil them. I could be wrong...

"You call me a 'high-status individual', is that just the way you look at things?" Yes. That is one of PVK's besetting sins. He mortifies it daily by surrounding himself with randos, and folks like Freddie, etc. Without that, he would probably be a monster of some kind -- embittered and possibly disillusioned by the lack of numbers in his brick-and-mortar ministry. With that mortification accomplished, he is certainly a vital (in both senses of the word) conduit in God's plan, both succeeding well beyond any expectations he could imagine, as well as retailing out His love to those around him.
