As a fellow Canadian I feel you on all of this. Motivation is always low when it's not as easy to get out there on our bikes. Fat biking is one of the only positives that keeps us going. but I'd be lying if i wasn't eagerly awaiting spring. Great vid!
I'm still commuting by bike in the winter, and some days, it's hard to say 'yes' to picking the bike, but now I've solidified it as a habit, and it always feels good to get the ride in.
I live in the upper Midwest with brutal winters, and I forced myself to ride more these last few months and it has made a massive difference for my physical and mental health! Sometimes you just have to embrace the suck, but if you dress for the weather you can be pretty comfortable even in the negatives. I'll wear thermals and insulated hiking/cycling pants, and on the really cold days I'll use a heated sweater with a battery pack.
Great watch. I feel you, first heavy fatbike riding season here, in Montreal. Stoked at the riding surface conditions that the cold winter brings, this year. But those rides in -25C have been kicking my a** hard! Factoring in, like you say, the inevitable pre and post ride car Tetris with the bikes, bare hands and soaking wet from the effort lol, it’s been a logistical nightmare! But the ride in itself is such bliss.
@@francoisrdt glad to hear I’m not alone! Thanks for watching. That moment when my fingers went numb from Raynaud’s was because I was bare hands in -22c fiddling with my thru axel. But.. like you said it’s worth it for the blissful ride.
We don't get much snow here in Hungary during winters, maybe in the mountains or higher than most cities/villages but it's rare sadly. Still I have to keep an eye on humidity and the little bit of rain that might fall during the day since its mostly between -5 and 5°C it will freeze by morning, but still you can ride just about any bike with a decent winter cycling gear and you'll be fine.
@@BastiaanFonteyn thanks for watching! Agreed, my healthy obsession started after I got my all city gorilla monsoon against all recommendations haha. Cheers!
Great video at SMH! I find using a thermal water bottle helps to prevent water from freezing and also keeps the water from getting too cold to drink. Also keeping snacks in pocket under jacket to keep from freezing … but in -20 temps anything will freeze!! You are brave for going out in those temps!! I use a triangular frame travel bag works great to fit my bottle as well as hand pump and pressure gauge. Rockhopper is always a gnarly trail to ride lol! Great video and now it’s time to go for a ride! Cheers!
I really like the “put your base layer on in the morning” advice! I hadn’t heard that before. No singletrack within biking distance in Ottawa? How about bootleg/neighborhoods trails?
@@ThriftyFramebuilder there sorta is one spot centrally in the city. I just rode there and will highlight it in an upcoming video! Our road salt is so bad here and I’m not well equipped to wash my bike in the winter (small place, outdoor hose is shut off when it’s cold) so I avoid riding the roads too much.
Great video with some wonderful edits. In the Midwest of the US, we've had drought for a while. Lots of fat bikes for sale, but I don't have the garage space for one. 😄
Thanks so much for the Super! That’s so kind of you ❤️. I feel you on the storage space, we struggle with it too and have to remove the front wheel to fit it in our home. That’s why I rented this one actually.
The frozen bottles can be so annoying! Especially since I find myself needing to drink more water than I usually would in cold temp since I sweat so much pedaling the fat bike around in the snow. This year I got a neoprene bottle enclosure from Bar Mitts that mounts right to the down tube and no more frozen bottles!! I’ve done quite a few ~2hr rides this year down to -12C and it has worked great! Looks a little clunky on the bike and most of the time it’s difficult to get to while trail riding trying to work with the zipper, but it’s a great excuse to stop for a moment and take a lot around. Happy Fat Biking!
That enclosure sounds really cool, what a great idea! I’ll have to check that out because I’m the same in needing a lot of water out there. Happy riding!
As long as your bike bottle closes well, put it in the cage upside down. Ice freezes from the top down. Personally I use a bladder and blow the water back out of the tube when I'm done taking a sip and I tuck the mouthpiece into my jacket to keep it from freezing.

It’s especially bad if I touch cold metal, which I did right before that clip 😬.
