Fun fact: that tube is additional intake volume to balance the cylinder volume to time when the wave front passes the carb venturi during low rpm low throttle conditions (such as idle). Most people that remove the hose and plug the port discover the bike runs worse!
oh wow, I was wondering if it had something to do with that also like how cars have strange pipes and chambers on the air boxes sometimes. so helpful to know that actually, thanks so much
My personal belief is, if you are going to go somewhere remote with a motorcycle, someplace far from help where a tow truck can't get to you, then you want an air-cooled and carbureted motorcycle like the TW200 or one of the other air-cooled dualsports out there, because the number of things that can fail on you in the middle of nowhere are not that many. There is no electric fuel pump to quit on you, there is no radiator for a stick or a rock to go through, there are no injectors to malfunction, no thermostat to stick shut and overhead your bike and possibly warp the motor, no radiator hoses to cut on something. If you take an extra ignition module, an extra spark plug wire, extra regulator/rectifier (all three of which weigh very little and are very small) and maybe a carb rebuild kit with you, then you basically have everything with you that can cause your motorcycle not to run, I mean these bikes will even run if the battery is dead. It's not a matter of size, it's a matter of RELIABILITY and EASE OF REPAIR if something goes wrong. That's why these bikes are the Swiss Army Knives of motorcycling and adventure.
for sure, I feel better having a simple carbed bike as well Yeah no fuel injection stuff and no coolant leaks to worry about, exactly, simple and easy to fix unless a rod bearing fails or something, should be easy to get out of a bind
Hey bud just had to share.... after years of watching your channel and coming so close to buying a Tdub in the past.... I finally picked one up ha ha ha. I always passed on them because I commute highway quite often and wanted more for the freeway but this time around I just decided I needed two bikes ha ha. This thing actually fit in my truck bed UNDER the canopy ha ha ha, its so tiny!
hey thanks for sharing and congrats! 2 bikes is the way to go, good to hear, they are great to take camping. easy to hop on the street when needed and great to run to the store
The tube is part of a California emissions package, snip it off long enough to put it on the port and adjust the carb properly, mine runs great, also there is a block off plug that hides an adjustment screw, take pug out to make adjustment.
I watched this a couple of weeks back, today it happened to be the day that the crack becomes significant, I wasn't worried knowing I could hear the hissy sound from that boot. I am going to seal the crack with silicone gel as I wait for the spare parts to arrive. Takes about 3 weeks Thank you man

Hey tdubskid, I live in Parker CO and whip the TW often. A word of warning, this issue regarding the carb boot can cause the engine to run way too lean and will fry the piston. I posted this issue on the TW forum a while back when this issue came up for me. It happened again a month ago and I had to pull the engine apart again. The boot isn’t ripped, but the expansion hose had cracked. Honestly for an air cooled motor, this boot should be a metal part. The intake definitely gets hot and the heat cycles will age the rubber boot prematurely. Thanks! Good content as usual and I hope to see you on the trails this season when my baby is up and running!
for sure, running lean too long can cause problems, that really sucks and yeah they should have used something better maybe someone should make a metal replacement part. best of luck, thank you
It for sure shouldnt be metal because it would transfer a lot of heat would transfer to the carb, which would cause it to run poorly. For bikes with metal intakes you often have thick plastic gaskets. Which is a huge failpoint, in my experience. It leaks air very easily and have had them break on me as well.
this is excellent!! and yes, I REALLY would like videos on how to remove the tank & plastic. I've followed most of your other videos & modified my TDub accordingly, so she's ready for the BDR's now. Thanks for your outstanding work!!!
I live in Florida, but have a man cave in Maryville, Tennessee. Let me know when you want to ride the Smokey mountain area- your welcome to stay. I got 4 t-dubs in the garage there. I usually fly up in Spring, summer, & fall for 4-5 days at a time. You can drive up with your bike or fly into Knoxville & ride one of mine. Im 5 miles from the airport.
Man thats awesome, may have to take you up on that one day, my girlfriend lives in Ohio, she will eventually move out west with me but we will always visit ohio so adventures out east will be more feasible
Thank you for the great explanation and in-depth demonstration! The "run away choke" example reminds me of a condition I had a couple years ago, before replacing my carb and boots. It makes me think part of my problem may have been a vacuum leak. (I was also struggling to get the float valve to seat and the carb kit was more than a newer model knock-off carb so I also replaced it, which required new boots.)
Good info. Your channel is one of the reasons I decided to buy a tw200. I feel confident that i can do the same troubleshooting/repair as you demonstrated
Also a good idea to put a little high temperature sealant between the cylinder head and the carb boot just to make sure it's going to seal 100%. Another great video TDK.
@@TDubsKidif you get the right boot, I wouldn't put anything on it at all. Just make sure it's clean on the head and the boot and the carb. Any sealant will degrade faster than the boot, and create a cleanup issue years later when you need a new boot again.
Another good way to check for vacuum leaks is with a can of Gumout carb cleaner, sprayed around the carb boot. I've also used it on car motors as well. If the revs increase, you have a leak spot. Just make sure your motors cool when you start the test!
I replaced the carb to head manifold on my XT225. I noticed the little nubs in the groove for the O ring. I thought they were a manufacturing defect as the O ring did not want to sit in the groove well. I carved them out with my pocket knife. I also replaced the carb. I see the nubs in your new manifold, (10:43), so maybe doing this was a mistake, but the O ring seems to seal well and the bike runs fine.
I have used propane in the past to check for vacuum leaks, it works well. I've tried starter fluid but it just makes a mess I find. Either way, good advice.
It would be great to see you in the East TN/Western NC/North GA area. Endless trails, mountain ridges, and beautiful mountain rainforest views. You should hit up March Moto Madness in TN when you get that van up and running.
I had the hose disconnect from the manifold in the middle of nowhere. It would run under throttle, but die as soon as the throttle was relaxed. I had no idea that was the problem at first, and was thinking I'd be stuck out there. I thought the carb had decided to fail. Luckily found the issue after really looking the carb area over. Squeezed the hose back on and good to go.
Nice video. I had another tip. I used to just run the gas out of carb while running before storage, but the main jet seems to be susceptible to fouling unless the bowl drain is used.
This was super interesting! Now I'm wondering if a vacuum leak was the issue I had with a Tdub I got at a city auction that ran like crap no matter what I did to it... It's sold and gone now, but at least if this happens again, you've given me another thing to look at. Thank you for sharing!
Nice to see you again. Still hard at it I see. I'm 72 as I've mentioned before and have had 4 of these TWs. They are all tough on the body because of little suspension. Have you explored any options? Spring rates, different shock oils? Anything on the market for the rear? My back is getting to me lol
Hello Tdubskid, quick question, what gas station do you use? Do you use the Top Tier stations like Chevron or the cheaper stations like Circle K. Thanks. Keep up the good videos. James.
I always enjoy watching your videos TDubsKid!. I have learned pretty much everything I would need to know over the years and my 2020 will be better for it!
Have you ever had to rebuild your carb ? My carb on my TW 200 1989 just started acting crazy. I am getting ready for a carb rebuild , I have a few friends who are moto motorheads so I hope I am in good hands. Keep up the videos.
Excellent vidja. Have you guys had all the rainfall like the Eastern part of CO? I haven't even been able to ride around Canõn City due to the slimy nature of all the trails.
@TDubsKid Okay awesome thank you so much; I've got a Tdub of my own and I'm wanting to make videos on it just as a hobby. Your channel is amazing and helps so much when it comes to working on this bike so seriously thank you so much for all of it
You can crash the throttle a bit and it should smooth out enough to test the for leaks with the spray. as the rpms increase and the air flow goes up the lean condition will lesson alowing the engine to run enough for your test. at even half throttle the airflow through the carb will be high enough to make a small vaccume leak insignificant
Hooka? Vape? Oh yeah, you are in one of those states. Haha When I did the 225 change, used the old TW carb but ordered a new boot cause the intake on the motor is a little bigger. But didn't have that vacuum port. Runs like a champ. Hmmmm Van with auto drive, back gate drops down to scoop up the Dub in motion on the trail, like Knight Industries semi trailer did for KITT. Then some hot chick topping off the tank, replacing an L.E.D., couple zip ties, putting a cold 6 pack in the cooler bag then off again on the trail.... talking rocks and all
very helpful... I have a brand new 2024 tw and it does that high rev run when I first start it using the choke and seems to take a too long to warm up like 5 min or more but it the high rev that concerns me the most almost sounds like the throttle is stuck at about 20% tgrottle... Is it common to have vacuum leak new with less than 100 miles on it?
Its normally for the rpm to raise with the choke one, they do take a while to warm up, thats kinda strange, its not common at that mileage unless maybe the bike is super old
@@TDubsKid thanks .. nope bike is brand new less than one hundred miles.. it starts right up just revs kinda high and but it have to wait a few minutes to choke down and go or it'll cut out
Hello Tdubs, I purchased a new TW200 a few months ago and I have a question about riding in Hot weather. I take it you live in Colorado where it does get exceptionally hot but here in Henderson, Las Vegas area it does. In the summer the temps can go to 115 degrees and lots of days over 100 degrees. Does it hurt to ride my TW200 when it’s this hot? I am from northwest Oregon and I never had to worry about the heat with these Air Cooled Motorcycles but here it’s a different story. What do you think about this? Thanks for helping everyone with the TW200s. James
hey for sure, wow it usually doesn't get that hot here, the TW200 could overheat easier in those temps, if you keep it moving it should be ok, hard slow up hill trails can really make it overheat when it's 80 out, you can tell when it starts to over heat, you start to loose power, done it manytimes, have to give it a cool down break or get it moving quicker to get air over the fins. I would be riding at night in the summer if I lived there haha
My tw200 is seized LOL I let it sit too long. And the problem with my bike was it was either the stator, or the problem your talking about bc it would run like and I parked it think I would eventually fix it
So I cannot find a kickstart from your channel, does your tw not take it, or is it more work than reward? Or even that it isn’t required? Just wondering, as you are my go-to channel for mostly everything tw related!
yeah it's a bit more involved, that just slapping on a kick starter, you have to buy a bunch of parts, last time I checked it was like $350 and you have to piece everything together
I just bought a 2016 TW200 with only 900 miles on it. Runs fine but sometimes engine quits at idle. Do you think that could be a vacuum leak? And, I know TWs don't go fast but I seem to top out on RPMs at about 30 mph in 3rd gear and top out at 35 mph in 4th gear....is that normal? Haven't takent it on highway to see how hard to get it to 50 mph) Thanks for any input that you can give me, TDubsKid! :-)
hey congrats, it could be ore something else best to test and see. yeah they are geared pretty low from the factory, you can check your gearing or change it. I have a video on it. best of luck!
I've been thinking about a sprinter van maybe. I'd love to have a place to sleep on one side and keep the bike on the other maybe. Great video man, as a long time bike tech, vac leaks are some of the most overlooked issues I've seen. Un-metered air on any engine definitely causes crazy issues. I may think about that smoke machine for the shop. I've needed one for a long time. What does it use to pressurize the smoke?
that would be cool! I hear they are slow as dirt, i'm surprised you wouldn't go with a ford transit or econoline haha. thank you! for sure, crazy how something so simple can get overlooked. for sure it's not a bad little unit so far, easy to take places too uses a little air compressor
@TDubsKid ha, I say "sprinter" without thinking dodge sometimes. Tall skinny van lol! Man I'm in some absolutely fantastic country right now man! Middle Idaho headed north!
My TW runs great until I get into higher rpm’s or under a load. When going up steep hill to my house,I have to put in 1st gear and throttle to point before it cuts out. And barely make it.I’ve even had to get off TW and walk beside it last time , so I could make it home. Got any ideas?
have you checked for vacuum leaks like in the video? is it an old TW200? the old TW200 CDI units had issues and cause problems like your describing. could be a lot of things, need to start diagnosing the issue
@@TDubsKid my TW is 2008,when weather warms up, I’ll check for vacuum leaks and the cdi like you suggested. 2017 I was hit by a car,it bent front fork. I still been driving TW around on the farm with bent forks. I need to stop putting off repairs and get bike ready for this spring. Thanks for responding back, enjoy your channel!
hum, who knew? on mine, wont start, add choke, will start, but won't produce HP, even if warm. i am goin to put fresh gas in and hope that helps, but if not, definitely want to look for a vacuum leak. Thanks!
You could use a home smoker kit for smoking food in a container. They use wood sawdust to smoke food in the bowl or dish and you cover the bowl with plastic wrap to trap the smoke in . 😂 I think a smoke gun or smoke infuser they are called.
Fun fact: that tube is additional intake volume to balance the cylinder volume to time when the wave front passes the carb venturi during low rpm low throttle conditions (such as idle). Most people that remove the hose and plug the port discover the bike runs worse!
oh wow, I was wondering if it had something to do with that also like how cars have strange pipes and chambers on the air boxes sometimes. so helpful to know that actually, thanks so much
Yup! That’s why “removing the airbox lid” is often a cheat to get more power rather than actually getting the right CFM Carb and jetting.
i have ag 200s (australian tw200) and have wondered what that is for. thanks!
It's for when youre lonely on a trip and can't find a girl. Just remove the cap and rev the bike. Feels super good.
just. Got an old one tidied it up found a bolt stuck. In end of mine now I now why 🤔

Then some hot chick topping off the tank, replacing an L.E.D., couple zip ties, putting a cold 6 pack in the cooler bag then off again on the trail.... talking rocks and all
haha sure am here in Colorado, not that I do those things anymore. interesting, as long as it runs good! haha that would be epic lol perfect
Looking forward to tdub content. Van is pretty cool too. Thanks for this video.
thanks, more to come but hard to do both regularly, need to use this good weather before winter times hits. no problem
I used to own an 81 xt250. Similar to tw200 both 2 valve single cam. Jetting on both too lean stock burns valves and cam bearing.
Yeah I good to see for sure, with a proper plug chop, I live at high altitude so I dont have to worry about running lean with factory jetting
Very informative and detailed
Thank you!
glad to hear, thanks for watching!
We are not kids anymore dude 😪❤️
I'm still riding the kid bike tho
@@TDubsKid me too
very helpful...
Its normally for the rpm to raise with the choke one, they do take a while to warm up, thats kinda strange, its not common at that mileage unless maybe the bike is super old
@@TDubsKid thanks .. nope bike is brand new less than one hundred miles.. it starts right up just revs kinda high and but it have to wait a few minutes to choke down and go or it'll cut out
Hey Tdubskid, I was wondering what Gas you use in your TW200. Do you stay with the Tier 1 Stations? Thanks. Have a good day. James.
haha just any ol gas will do
Is WD40 useful to spray on the carb boot, to check for a leak? I heard that if RPMs increase during the spray, you have a vacuum leak.
For sure that will help indeed
And the problem with my bike was it was either the stator, or the problem your talking about bc it would run like and I parked it think I would eventually fix it
it's seized? you can't spin the crank!
hope you can get it fixed?
Such a great vid 👍🏻
Thanks so much!
So I cannot find a kickstart from your channel, does your tw not take it, or is it more work than reward? Or even that it isn’t required? Just wondering, as you are my go-to channel for mostly everything tw related!
yeah it's a bit more involved, that just slapping on a kick starter, you have to buy a bunch of parts, last time I checked it was like $350 and you have to piece everything together
maybe someday but need to spend money on other things right now
@@TDubsKid Alrighty! Thank you for your time!
I have a video on it. best of luck!
looking forward to more T Dub content.
thanks more to come eventually
How many miles you got on that bike now???
about 17,500 or so
@@TDubsKiddamn that’s a lot of miles!
@@dirtcopdualsport yeah and still runs great!
Great Little Motorcycle!! A Indian motorcycle dealer got 3 brand new ones in. Around $4500 new. Google dealers near Remus Michigan.
Isnt there an air screw to adjust?
it's just for the pilot jet
You have the van channel listed somewhere?
sure do, www.youtube.com/@4WheelKid
Middle Idaho headed north!
i have 2022 TW200 with 1600 miles.... the choke is a little stiff to pull out.. anything i can spray on it to smooth it out?
It is a a little stiff and has 2 indents, you could try a little silicone spray lube
Hey TDubsKid, thanks for another great video. Can you send me the specs on your front tire. It looks like a great agressive tire.
hey thanks, I have a video on my front tires with links in description ua-cam.com/video/fV9xiK0csb0/v-deo.html
Great demo
thanks!
Showing us what moto-camping accessories you found useful could make some interesting videos..
thanks for the idea!
Very interesting video sir..!
thanks!
Can anyone tell me what's that black N button and the below spring button which rotates?? Idk the use of them
it's the choke, you pull it out to make starting easier then put it back in once it starts warming up
My TW runs great until I get into higher rpm’s or under a load.
Do you have a kick start on your tw200? I just put one on my 2009. Found the kit in a motorcycle scrap yard. 40 bucks
I do not yet, maybe someday, nice find!
hum, who knew? on mine, wont start, add choke, will start, but won't produce HP, even if warm. i am goin to put fresh gas in and hope that helps, but if not, definitely want to look for a vacuum leak. Thanks!
yeah! could be an easy fix, a great thing to check
You could use a home smoker kit for smoking food in a container. They use wood sawdust to smoke food in the bowl or dish and you cover the bowl with plastic wrap to trap the smoke in . 😂 I think a smoke gun or smoke infuser they are called.
haha if it works it works!
Nice video! Thx!
no problem
Good info. thanks...
no problem
Great info!
thanks!
You have a van channel? I don't see it.

I was wondering how long it was gonna take for you to mention the most ghetto way to check for leaks, with a can of carb cleaner LOL
haha if it works it works
Love your videos bro
thanks!
TDubsKid, the rocks have been asking about you.
haha yeah they out there somewhere ready to be found
