- Mount Moriah Cemetery, located in southwest Philadelphia and Delaware County, Pennsylvania, is a 380 acre cemetery that has fallen into disrepair in recent decades. Although there have efforts to clean it up, there is still a lot of work to be done to complete the job.
Thank you for the tour of this abandoned historic cemetery. I am grateful for Veterans Affaires for maintaining their part of the cemetery and the volunteers for their efforts on the other parts of the cemetery.
A cemetery is a reflection upon its country health
I think it is tragic that people let this cemetery fall into such disrepair.
America is a fairly young country. Please people cherish these sites. They are our History. From the UK
Thanks for the video. More cowbell!
this is so sad these are historical sites, people need to fix these up. For shame we have so many like this across the nation.
Beautiful, haunting, interesting music, well done,
Thank You
I would assume that, at the time, some of those monuments cost thousands, or tens of thousands, of dollars - the families wanted to be remembered and have a lasting memorial. Very sad.
That is very sad. Our ancestors didn`t deserve this. Luckily here there`s no private cemeteries, cemeteries are comunal or in ownership of cities or counties so they mow old cemeteries few times in year so nature can`t take it over. Usualy cities and counties have programs for people who recive social aid, in return those people work those kind of jobs for city or county, mow cemeteries and lowns, do small repairs on sidewalks etc.
Philadelphia, you should be ashamed of yourself!
There are 100,000 burial sites here! And nobody even goes to take care of the graves their own family members??!
From Findagrave:
Mount Moriah Cemetery, situated in Philadelphia and Delaware Counties in Pennsylvania encompasses over 200 acres with over 100,000 burials. In April 2011, the cemetery ceased operations. Since that time, concerned stakeholders such as the City of Philadelphia, the Borough of Yeadon and the Friends of Mount Moriah Cemetery, Inc. have joined forces to preserve this historic burial ground. To date, the Mount Moriah Cemetery Association, incorporated in 1855, is still in existence; however, there are no surviving members of the corporation. Legal options are being pursued for ownership but in the interim, the Friends of Mount Moriah Cemetery are working diligently to restore and preserve the cemetery by hosting monthly restoration events.
The entire cemetery is open for visitors. If you would like assistance in locating your ancestor on site, contact the Friends of Mount Moriah Cemetery at info@fommci.org.
@Roger B Right On Was near there Last Week and Felt so bad when we went to Our Families Grave thank God not there.
- the family that knew the people all die off, the cemetery board members all die off, and this happens.
How sad. It's awful and it makes no sense why and how this happened. Makes you wonder that after your gone and years later is our resting place going to look like this. So sad.
This just makes me so sad, I’m sure at one time it was quite a majestic cemetery. My question is why has the state of PA not taken care of it? So tragic
A Friends' group has been working to fix it up over the past few years.
why don't the people of this area ban togather and restore this grave yard.if we can't respect our dead, how can we respect ourselves?
I'm a long-time Yeadon resident. Local residents have started a nonprofit and a go fund me account to help restore some of the monuments there, but it's hard to gather funding because it isn't controlled by a single entity (neither the city of Philadelphia or Delaware County).
@Winning Grinn vampires?
@@treystephens4490 No not really those are undead corpses are dead people
It is absolutely a disgrace how the deceased in this country are treated. If it isn't a cemetery being abandoned it is some putz vandalizing and desecrating it.
In our town people who need financial help from the township trustee are required to work off any money they are given one place they work is the cemetery this could be an option for getting some help to fix this place up this is a disgrace to let the dead’s final resting place end up like this.
The best thing to do might be to try and get people interested in cleaning up the cemetery. Use the history of it to attract people to the cause and people can volunteer to help do clean up. Once that happens and the city and county see there is a problem and people want it addressed, they often move on things like this to save face for doing nothing in the first place. Sometimes, you have to shame those who have no shame in to do things they know they should but don't. That there is such a historically significant cemetery falling to pieces under their noses just might make it a cause celeb and help you to get it back to looking as it should. Just a suggestion.
Since posting this video nearly three years ago, a friends of the cemetery group has been doing a lot of work to clean it up. I have a few other videos that show areas that are now cleaned up.

This is tragic and should be addressed by your Governor . People, this could be your mother, father , child or friend. Stand up no demand dignity for your cemetery. So disgraceful
So sad to see cemeteries just forgotten
I have never seen neglect like this. It couldn't have happened overnight. This years in the making. Who owns the property now?
If you're a vampire it looks like a safe place to sleep.
I wonder if a controlled burn would work. Would it damage the head stones?
Put goats in there and they will clean it up.
Good video on the abandoned mount moriah cemetery is it true that people went to it for tours to learn about the history?
I have not heard if they have people doing tours of this cemetery but it could be a possible fundraiser for friends group that has been fixing it up. There are other cemeteries in the Philadelphia area where they give tours.
@@ForgottenHistory i kinda like it the way it is cause of the abandoned feel to it
I'm appalled. Clean this cemetery up for God's sake. Shame of Philly for letting this cemetery get in this outrageous condition. Maybe someone should contact the National Guard there at Philly and see if at least the graves of the recipients of the Congressional Medal of Honor's graves could be cleaned up and maintained.
Cemeterys are the only places that get more beautiful once nature takes over after no one is left of those poeple to tend the graves.
This is fate of every graveyard eventually.
My sister was laid to rest here in april of 2009 #ripkia
shykiya barren 2009? That recently? Weren't you concerned at that time,?
Why did you not explore inside the large mausoleum that you headline on your video?
Great video o p. Very educational also so Kudos and thumbs up however how about narration next time so I don't have to read my way through it. Greetings from Salem Oregon March 2nd 2019.
Sadly, I am sure that most of the people interred there no longer have living relatives in the area so it goes without saying that moving the bodies would have to fall to state or local government in lieu of there being any corporate entity or private investment group that would have control over it. Many times, I think the plan is just that, to let the cemetery fall into disrepair and neglect until local government becomes concerned and has to take action and foot the bill. With no relatives to move the bodies are have any say in their disposition, pretty much anything can be done with them. Usually, they are moved headstones and all to a new cemetery but the sheer number here might make that a costly enterprise for local government who would not doubt be looking to cut costs if they had to do it.
Shame on Pennsylvania for being Disrespectful to the departed, maybe they should use some of the Ill gotten money from their"parking enforcement" fund to help refurbish the Cemetery.
You're preaching to the choir regarding the sad state of the cemetery. If it truly was abandoned, why hasn't the state or county taken up the care and upkeep? Many cities and towns will do that and give the care of the cemetery over to the parks and recreation department. We have several cemeteries here where I live that are taken care of by the parks department. They mow grass, keep it trimmed up, fix the entry road, haul off wood after bad storms, etc. One cemetery, started during the War Between the States, is so nicely kept now that you can visit it and see little bits and pieces of the history of the area by the tombstones there. Sad to say but this is what happens when death becomes less of a time of memorial and contemplation and providing that final resting place for your loved one's eternal rest and more about being an investment or hedge in someone's portfolio and some private investment group who could care less about the cemetery but really are more interested in the acreage it sits on. It's such a historical place too. So many important names of people in the cemetery. I am surprised the local historical society isn't up in arms about it.
That is a sin the people that let it get that way you know they're not buried there but their grave should look that bad and rot in hell
I live up the street...if u cross the street that side is ever more scary
How so?
@@cloverleaf4829 cause it looks more old n spooky. There dates on tombstones that go back to to 1700s n the caregivers are not maintenancing that area. It has a really creepy vibe to it
@@sinsabath1009 I need to come up and see it... during daylight, of course.
@@cloverleaf4829 yea. Even than its just feel creepy like your being watch or something. I go fishing right by it cause there is a creek ride byside it. But its definitely what you imagine a haunted cemetery will look like
@@sinsabath1009 do you think there are vampires in there?
Why are the families of these people taking care of their family graves.
Judy Taylor some families know nothing of their past
They should of not have not closed this cemetery down in 2010 or 2011-whenever it was suddenly shut down. That was just wrong for them to do. Yes, it costs to maintain grounds and keep burials going, however there should of been ways thought of to keep cemetery open and active as oppossed to a sudden shutdown leaving this cemetery going to waste. This was a hurtful act against those resting in peace there as well.
Whet a shame the people in there
Is are ansters how would you feel
If you were in that cemetery a
Could see whet it looks like now
This is disgraceful.
😢😢😢
I have filmed a few myself... A shame that some don't keep up on the place's. :) Check my few video's... :) Nice video.
