    In this video I am demonstrating the Pearl Reference Series 4-piece Shell Pack. This drum kit was created by Pearl in an effort to make every drum in the kit sound its absolute best by utilizing the ideal tonal qualities for each size drum. Their idea behind this concept is that a 10" rack tom has naturally different tonal qualities the a kick drum for instance. You want to have more low end in a kick drum and more snap out of a small rack tom so they took that idea to the next level by using three different woods, different bearing edges, and great hardware to bring out the best sound in each drum.
    The three woods used are maple, birch, and African mahogany. They start with the 12" rack tom as the center piece and because of that the 12" rack tom is the only drum that is completely made out of maple. All drums smaller in diameter then 12" get two plies of birch on the inside of the shell. That brings out the snap in the smaller drums. All drums larger then 12" get up to six plies of African mahogany on the inside of the shell to bring out the lower end sound qualities.
    For the edges, all of the drums 12" and smaller get 45-degree back-cut bearing edges and all of the drums larger then 12" get fully rounded bearing edges. That is a neat feature that most drum companies don't do anymore. Round edges give more suface area for the drumhead to sit on and that is a great way to get a full and warm sound out of a drum.
    In this shell pack you get 8" x 10" and 9" x 12" rack toms, a 16" x 16" floor tom, and a real fat 18" x 22" kick drum. There is really nice hardware that comes with this kit like the BRL Bridge Lugs w/Swivel Function, MasterCast Die-cast hoops, Aluminum OptiMount rack tom suspension system, stainless steel tension rods, and heavy duty SP-300 kick drum spurs.
    To round out the whole package the drums come in a beautiful Scarlet Sparkle Burst lacquer finish that will make every head turn when you go to a gig with this kit.
    Pearl went to great lengths to make a beautiful sounding high end drum kit that will work well in any musical situation. Weather it be live or in the studio you can be confident these drums will get the job done and then some. Thanks for watching!

    I believe that Pearl got this idea from what studio sound engineers demand from a recorded drum sound and drum kit.. A particular snare, rack tom, floor, kick drum for different tonal aspects, bring in different but vital essentials for the perfect, all around drum sound..Great concept on Pearl's part.. Now if only i could afford one.. ;)

    I own a Pearl Export from back in the late 1980s. Not bad, but primitive now :). I'd like to get a new set, but the only easy choices here are Pearl - surprise - and Gretsch. So far, I like the sound and look of this type.

    These sweetwater videos are great, Nick is a great player and makes all the drums sound good jaja, I've noticed you use a different tuning approach with each kit. In each video the drums are tuned in different notes, never the same, that's cool cause It has helped me to know how those different tunings sound like without having to actually change the tuning of my kit. Any moment I want I can just go ahead and change it and will already know how it will sound. Of course you gotta have a pretty good ear to know at what exact note the drums are tuned but if you have it you can totally do it!!

    I LOVE Pearl stuff. I play DW, but have always used pearl hardware (cymbal stands, pedals, hi-hat, etc...). They make fantastic stuff. However... I'm shocked that a kit made in Taiwan costs this much ($3,600). Not to say that Taiwanese craftsman aren't good, but labor costs are far lower there than in the USA. So either Pearl is making a shit ton in profit off of these, or these have features that would make this a $5,000 drum kit if it were made in the states.

    I'm disenchanted with the whole shell pack concept where the snare drum-the heart of a drum kit is excluded. You're paying top dollar for a nice drum set such as this one only to have to spend more $ for the snare. Would it make more sense to add a few hundred dollars to the price for the sd making the set complete? I can remember a time when a drum set purchase included not only the snare but hardware as well. As cymbals and a throne and you were ready to play.

    • @bradencutright-head6629

      I think it's personal preference as far as snare, hardware, cymbals and throne are concerned

    • @ryana6961
      @ryana6961 8 років тому +6

      It's actually better this way. The purchases you remember probably included cymbals that were either really bad or had a sound that you weren't going for and the same goes for the snare. Excluding the snare and cymbals from the purchase allows you to customize your kit better so you can go for something like a piccolo snare with crashes, hats, and a ride of your choice. Maybe you already have cymbals, but a really low end kit, so getting just the shell pack is in your best interest.

    • @andyham6094
      @andyham6094 6 років тому

      Most kits that come with hardware are entry level kits. Not all kits but most that also come with a snare drum are usually a cheaper drum and also an entry or intermediate kit. Some kits that come with everything including cymbals are the most entry level you can get with the worst sounding tin can cymbals. Not saying all kits with shares are bad cause I have a Tama starclassic BB hyperdrive and there was an option for matching snare but most drummers including myself don’t really prefer matching snares honestly. This is pearls top of the line kit so they you can easily purchase a matching snare but most kits nowadays don’t come with the snare in the price but u can easily order a matching snare or some stores have it in stock but don’t put it in the shell pack since most drummers prefer not to have a matching snare drum and raises the price obviously. But I prefer Tama drums over pearl. Tama starclassics are the best drums in the world to my ears personally and best bang for your buck. Best sound feel hardware price on the market IMO. Used to have a pearl masters custom maple and hated the hardware and mounting system on the rack and floor Tom Tom mount. Always came down and hit my bass drum no matter how tight I tightened it and they haven’t really updated much since then. Maybe it was just my kit that had such problems but after I switched to Tama I never looked back.

      ottoman Turk yeah I’d take a tama starclassic Anyday over any drum in the world. It’s just the perfect drum set for me. I have a tama starclassic BB hyperdrive 5 piece kit with the new updated hardware brought down from the star series drums like quick lock Tom brackets, quick lock floor Tom legs and air cushioned floor Tom legs. Just the best feeling, looking, sounding, durable, perfectly built kit with the best quality. I also have a Tama Silverstar as my back up and gigging kit I can use to take on the road and beat up and still be reliable every night. Starclassics are the road warrior kings but I love my Starclassics so much I only take those out to the bigger shows, everything else I bring the silver stars which is such a great bang for your buck. It’s tama’s mid level kit along with the superstars and the hardware is better than most companies’ top of the line kits and sound just as good. Got my 5 piece silverstar kit for 800 and the hardware is awesome. Not as good as starclassic hardware but the next best thing and for the price u can’t beat that. I am also saving up for a tama starclassic full Bubinga kit but those are the most expensive starclassic kits and nothing sounds like tama Bubinga. Best drums on the planet imo.
