Good length video. Perfect demonstration and camera work in a tight space. Best instruction that I've seen on belt replacement. That's all you need. Well done!
This was the PERFECT video for me. There are so many different lawn tractors, but this one matched mine (MTD) perfectly. Most drive belt videos focus on the lower (longer) belt. TightWadDIY has a video for the lower drive belt too, but this is the one I needed. By the way, the biggest pulley needs a 7/8" wrench (I used a closed end wrench - a socket will not fit underneath the frame bar). You need to put a screwdriver in the hole to stop the pulley from turning and then squeeze the 7/8" wrench in place and pull hard! It takes some strength, but it moved. Loosen the bolt on the pulley and it will be loose enough to remove the old belt and put on the new one. Thanks so much for this great video!
Thanks brother your video was easier to follow than the manual and other places I looked. I changed the belt and can now tackle this 3 feet high grass that has grown while I waited to change it. You are the man!!!
Thanks, most vids involve changing the forward belt which is more involved, this vid was exactly what I needed as my belt is as bad or worse than yours was.
I’m glad you found it helpful. I do think you should change both belts while you are in there though. I have a video showing step by step for the lower belt also.
Very good video young man. I truly appreciate it as I have never seen anything like this here before. Been working on mowers since I was a kid too. Thank you!
It is usually a good idea to replace both the upper and lower drive belts at the same time. They work together and typically wear out in the same amount of time. Follow this link to view the video for changing the Lower Drive belt. ua-cam.com/video/s15DY6FkCeE/v-deo.html
Great demo! Changed mine out but for some reason the pulley with the spring, is pulling the belt so much that its contacting the mower deck lifter. Which that lifter is incredibly close. I don't know if my replacement belt might be a hair too long? Not sure if you or anyone has every run into this issue. The lifter in question you can see starting at about 1:40 into your video.
I spoke to you about your microphone I found out the name of the one on the other video I was hearing is called a lavalier microphone works exceptionally well it's like you're just standing there talking to me one on one FYI thank you for everything
I’ve definitely looked into lavalier mics. I would prefer a wireless one but I’ve never pulled the trigger. Check out some of my more recent mower videos and you will see the audio is much better.
TightWadRepairs saved me at least a hundred bucks I figure. I just fixed it and literally took me 20 minutes from looking for wrenches to putting the seat back down finished. Thank you so much.

+TightWadRepairs I'd love to see one on removing the deck itself. Working on mine and had neglected any real maintenance on mine for several years so tore it down to the frame as was easier to examine and work on stuff. I fear the deck for some reason lol
The deck should be fairly easy to remove once the belts are off. There are just a few points that hold it on. I will see if I can get a video made for you soon.
My upper drive belt shredded today on my Bolens 38 inch cut. Which pullies do I wrap the belt around? I got the old one off, but now I'm confused which pully do i route the belt on the shift pully. Is it the top or bottom part? Please help! I'm 69 years old and getting a little foggy minded. I subbed. Thank you in advance.
MyRCexperience Thank you for the comment. The same techniques usually apply to all mower belts. Hopefully you can get yours changed without too much trouble. Be sure to subscribe for more tips!
Good job on the video. Clear and concise. I'm wondering if I can pry or hammer the metal next to the largest pulley outward just a bit so I won't have to remove it. That way, the belt could be replaced from the side of the mower without pulling the battery. Also, there are many versions of this riding mower. Mine is labeled as a White Outdoor and I have seen them at Wal Mart with a black paint job. Can't remember what name they had there. You can tell they are the same tractor because all the controls are in the identical spot.
I did all of this and fired it up. Initially it did great in forward and reverse but the more I shifted it slowed almost to a stop then barely moved in a jumpy manor and smoke started coming from the right side of the mower somewhere. I immediately shut it off. Im lost😭 Any suggestions??
To change a lower drive belt on an automatic or pedal drive (I guess about a 2003) I removed deck, lifted the rear of tractor with a chain fall. Release the upper belt tensioner spring and slip off belt. Then adjust to fit a vice grip type clamp and clamp the top of the variable pulley to the bottom of the pulley bracket so it does not turn when you loosen the bearing retaining nut (one at bottom of the variable pulley). Loosen this nut to where it is almost all the way off. Push up the pulley till bearings bottom on nut head. This will allow enough clearance from the belt keeper bracket to remove and install new belt in bottom pulley groove. You may also have to loosen the three ten millimeter head bolts that hold the pulley bracket to the frame to get side clearance. When you can thread the belt around the pulley retighten all bolts. Hold the crankshaft pulley with a pipe wrench and remove pulley bolt and drop pulley to remove the belt. Also you can remove the belt sleeve guide by unscrewing it so it does not interfere with the new belt that you are now pushing through from underneath. Push the crank pulley back on and put belt around it and push it all the way up so it is inside the keepers. Re torque bolt. Then reinstall the guide bolt/sleeve. Then thread the belt around the two tensioners underneath. Then reinstall the upper belt and reattach the tensioner spring. Job easy and simply done.
Superb video! Instant subscriber for sure. Headed out to replace drive belt now. Do you have any part number for a muffler for this type of riding mower? Universal muffler? Mine came without one & it is LOUD. Thanks again for a wonderful video!
Silver Maple Sorry I somehow missed this comment. I appreciate the kind words. Try calling MTD and ask them about the muffler. They are surprisingly helpful.
Did you have to loosen the nut on the bracket of the tensioner pulley? Mine won’t move. However I did manage to get the new belt on. Also mine seems to not wanna go as fast as it used to. It does grass cutting speed, but not faster. Any ideas?
I got the belt off but now the littlest pulley won’t move left when the spring is unhooked. It moved left earlier when removing old belt,, now it won’t move either way. Any suggestions
3:02 how do you get it on the larges pulley? Mine has a guard keeping it from going on. 2:31 loosen pulley? why? what does that do? can you show that? I did this but after I did the speed control no longer worked. Now it goes in like speed 2 and not 4, 5, or 6. !!!!
@@TightWadDIY I noticed that you need to take large pulley part way off and was able to get it on but speed no longer works. I noticed the spring was off when I took old belt off and it was really hard to get spring on after new belt. New belt is same number as old belt. I noticed it looked like you are gently pulling spring with one hand. I had to brace myself and pull with both hands using about 40-50 lbs of pressure.
Hey i have a mtd lawn tractor it starts up and cuts grass but it wont move i was going uphill one day and stopped moving could it be the this drive belt ?
That is the same symptom mine had before I replaced my belts. It ran like new after the change. There is an upper and a lower drive belt. I suggest replacing both at the same time because when one is worn out, they both are likely ready to change. I have videos for both.
When you pulled the string on the extension spring (1:49) in order to remove it, the hook was positioned vertically. In mine, when I initially removed the extension spring, its hook was horizontal. Does it matter whether the spring is hooked back in the vertical or horizontal position?
I show the model number at 2:55 in the video. I always recommend buying an OEM replacement belt instead of getting one that is only close. This is a crucial belt for your mower so get the OEM.

Haha. Yeah they are on pretty tight. I didn't have a tripod to hold my camera when I recorded this one. I couldn't video and loosen nuts at the same time. Everything about that pulley is difficult.
I agree. When you loosen (not remove) the pulley nut, what happens to the pulley? Does it just allow the pulley to tilt a bit upwards so that the drive belt can be squeezed in or out of position? Is it best to use a socket extender to access the pulley nut from above the battery compartment?
RICHARD maaske The upper drive belt is only around the three rear pulleys. It doesn’t go around the engine pulley. There is a separate lower drive belt that you may be working on instead. I have a video for that as well.
