How Hard are Polyphia's Riffs to Play Really? (Playthrough)

- Hi friends I made this channel for fun since I wanted a platform to motivate myself and hopefully others and to rant a little heh.
In this video I'm playing a few Polyphia riffs I've learnt and talking about my journey from a beginner guitarist not knowing a thing about progressive rock & guitar to attempting one of the hardest riffs that I know.
If you liked the video pls like share sub comment blah blah, I'll be uploading a full instrumental + vocal cover of this Japanese rock song I like soon and a bunch of other random music projects :D
OD should be a 20/polyphia. that riff's crazy and it's played crazy fast
sounds like a fun challenge for the future o.o
@bass-bv7iy ego death if def on top, abc is hard but ego death if something else. The solos on ego death were INSANE. I'd say od is right after ego death.
Bro I for real think you should deserve more recognition. This is awesome.
tysm bro appreciate it :)
Awesome ones you picked out and great analysis on them. Love you picked the shred colab riff as I think that's ones of the most beautifully written melodic riffs ever. Wish hed make a song with it. Keep rockin!
Great playing and analysis of the riffs! Just a little more polishing of techniques and you'll be amazing for sure! Keep it up!
Cheers for the comment bro, got a long way to go still for sure but the grind won’t stop :D 💪
Excellent playing and I loved the captions too, made me laugh! I can play the intro to GOAT and the main riff of The Worst and I agree, the latter is more difficult to nail for sure. Both are incredibly fun to play and really aren't that difficult, so long as you learn all the different techniques like hybrid picking etc. You got yourself a new sub, keep the Polyphia coming!!!!
Ahah agreed for sure, thank you!
gotta love that u added jared's collab. goes hard, great work
tysm man appreciate it :D
@3:12 don't shit on your playing my friend you are doing incredible with these exceptionally challenging riffs... keep it up!!!
thank you for the encouragement man it means a lot to me. i'll keep doing my best with it :)
Goat took me two months before i could play it clean, and a year to get it consistently clean. The Worst is about the same difficulty its just easier to fool your way through it because there isnt a super fast bit. OD still gives me a lot of trouble i dont claim to be able to play it even almost a year after learning. The shred collab, i can play it messy up to speed but right now im polishing it up playing it perfectly at like .8 speed and hopefully moving up from there. Playing God is incredibly hard but i have practiced it so much i have it clean enough that i warm up with it. If you dont play it for more than like two days its gonna sound terrible in warm ups. Great vid good luck bro
I'm new to Polyphia. This is a great breakdown and commentary on the riffs. Thank you!
cheers bro glad you liked it :D
nice playing bro also great guitar that's the one I have too
the way how the song keeps going on in the background makes this feel like some kind geometry dash challenge level ranking
Your work is noticeable!! Great job, keep it up
cheers tysm :D
Damn the guitar skills are crazy
RESPECTTT TYTY
I'm on a quest of learning Playing God, the whole thing, and some moments are def harder than the main riff
It's really hard and I'm never finished perfecting it but I won't give up
Great vid !
That was sick dude !!
tysm :DD
your guitars are so pretty
😍😍😍 Insane video!
thanks bruv
amazing video
As a intermediate guitarist, I can confirm that my favorite things to play is Goat, The worst, and playing god
cool dude, what string gauge do you use on that telecaster ?
i use .009-.042 gauges for it!
Fckn awesome dude!!!!!
yooo we have the same guitar! also great vid!
Could you tell me what the model of the guitar is?
@@Shidou.ryus3i the one I have is the one he used in the first part and it's the Ibanez RG370AHMZ, very good guitar, can recommend
@@elefanta tysm
I've been wanting to get my first guitar but I couldn't decide which one. I think I'll get this one.
@@Shidou.ryus3i
what model is that guitar u used for the goat, genesis, and shred collab part?? It's beautiful 😍💙
IKR?? the moment I saw it for its price I knew it was the one ahah it's an ibanez rg370ahmz
The creator, Tim thinks O.D. is the hardest but well everyone has different background but the difficulty is around there.
C2 IN THE HOUSE AYYYYY
BA BA BA BA BA BA BA BA
Staring down a barrel, they think I'll die in shackles
But I turn the tables (ayyyy)
met a myth before 🥵🥵
Rizzspect 💯
40oz (especially the part leading up to the the last part, around 2:44) is so damn hard to play. The whole song is sweeping motions and tapping.
For me Goat is an 8,5, genesis was a 3ish, playing god was 7, Shred collab a 10, OD a solid 10 too and egodeath is like 9
Nice stuff
then the ABC riff came out where you need to hammer on with your Index, Middle, and Pinky finger and the distance between those hammer ons and taps are so far
The main riff really is erratic
The main riff really is erratic
Ok, this might sound a bit crazy but, I think I have a better chance playing O.D. than some of their other songs. With my instrument (hint hint) things like hammer/pull off and left hand tap(non-standard tech for what I study) is physically demanding and hard to produce good sound. However, I do play a lot of fast 16ths and "shredding" which is basically OD. Not saying it will be a piece of cake tho, im still not near prosessional to even play the standard reportire which are very similar sounding, written by someone the equivalent of Eddie or Ingvay in my field. And those were written specifially to be ergonomically playable on my instrument. Anyway, ill continue to work on it over time and maybe I can get it recorded some time in future.
context: I play the Zhongruan
ps. Its uhh... china guitar
pps. check out Playing God cover on Guzheng, its really gd
ppps. Reminiscence of yunnan 3rd mvt is the reportire for reference. I can play it, not up to speed yet tho. (also folk song by Liu Xing if you want)
ppps. If your a fellow chinese instrumentalist, say hi! and jia you for practice! 😁
Thanks, I'm gonna spend the next week tryna figure out what your goddamn instrument is. Fuck
ganxie ni de pinglun!! I haven't tried learning od personally but i'd love to see it you play once you master it :D that guzheng playing god cover blew my mind when I first watched it it was really well done haha. I haven't heard much chinese classical growing up in the west and all but i'll check it out
as a man with both a trumpet and a guitar, i find genesis to be an absolute win. not gonna try the brass part yet im too scared of those high notes.
HAHA I'm tryna get my trumpeter friend to play it with me and hes saying the high notes are killing him asw 😂
@@calebkinghymn yea just by listening i can tell they're not easy. havent looked at the sheet music for it yet though, so still dont know if i should be more frightened or less.
u forgot some slides for goat, and playing god was not clean but otherwhise it s great
As a complete beginner guitar player (but a violinist for 7 years) I’ve decided to start by teaching myself the riff for GOAT. Is that a bad idea? Probably. But I think I’ll learn a lot along the way doing it. If anyone has any legit beginner resources I would love to hear though since it would be good to back up my practice of this song while actually learning about the guitar lol
I think it's a big leap to go straight for, but doable and you'll for sure learn tons haha. As someone self taught with a piano background, I'd say just make sure that you learn how to play open chords and that your basic fretting and picking technique is correct. Any yt vid for beginners on picking will be more than sufficient (from my own experience anyways). Gl on your progress!
I would recommend practicing stuff with less right hand techniques being thrown at you. Learn how to use the pick properly then you can do whatever you want tbh. It’s just more important to make sure you develop good right hand technique now, so it doesn’t hold you back in the future.
Dude I was in the exact same situation. First thing I learned for guitar was playing God after 6 years of violin. A lot of skill carries over and harmonics are exactly the same.
Awesome!!!!
The more comfortable Tim Henson hit, the more fucking difficult I found it to be when I played it. I don't want to play the guitar........
ahah I know what you mean, just gotta grind and suffer 😭
fire!!!!
O.D. is the infinity symbol then ∞
I can play almost all the "interesting" Polyphia riffs including the JD Shred collab without issues. But after months of practice I can still only play O.D. at max 70% speed and with plenty of errors. If I increase the speed just a little from there it's will sound like complete shiet
Yeah OD still gives me trouble above any other polyphia song
Do you suggest a beginner like me to practice all the things you put in this video? Orrr nah?
I think go in order of difficulty I ranked them in lol to get a hang of the techniques, but make sure u have the basics of guitar sorted first
@@calebkinghymn can you send the basics and type in the things i should practice first?
@@calebkinghymn it would really help me
@@Rei-uq1jv Sure, I'm self taught so I can't guarantee you this is the 'proper' way but this is what worked for me and what I'd do if I did it all over again. Every single new thing you start you should ensure you have the correct technique by confirming it with a lesson on yt, whether it's as basic as picking or strumming or how you hold the guitar.
I would start learning the main open chords (C,D,A,E, G, Dmin, Amin, Emin) and the Aminor/major and Eminor/major barre positions. Even though this seems pretty acoustic guitar focused, it'll still teach familiarity with guitar and basic finger dexterity, plus you'll be able to play along to pretty much any song there is which is always a lot of fun. Find songs to play by googling pop songs in the key of C,D or G major and start as slowly as you need.
Once you're confident with that I'd learn to play electric guitar focused songs by mastering power chords, which are much easier than open chords so shouldn't take nearly as much time. Find tabs for popular pop rock or punk songs on yt and follow along cos they're also really easy and you can play basically any song with it with just one shape for the left hand. I'm assuming u listen to kpop based on your pfp so the Shoot Me chorus by Day6 is a good one to start off with.
Once you master those two then learning basic riffs/solos would be the next step. Just google tabs for simple sounding guitar solos that you like and learn it slowly. Once you can constantly pick the correct strings and are familiar with basic techniques like slides and pull-offs and hammer-ons, then I'd learn the genesis riff which introduces natural harmonics.
The advice I gave is assuming you're just starting out guitar, so if I'm not specific enough in any area feel free to ask me again. Hope this helps! :D
@@calebkinghymn hmm i get the idea now the first i should learn is to spend the day practicing the chords right?
In my opinion playing god is quite a bit easier than GOAT ngl.
Personally I find the jdsc riff and playing god to be about as difficult as each other. Neurotica I would say is overall about as hard as playing God as well. 40oz is just a little bit harder than those two unless you are really comfortable sweeping in which case it's probably even with them. Ego Death and OD are truly on another level tho when it comes to difficultly and then there's the Jason Richardson solo on Aviator which is borderline impossible.
Ooh thanks for the insight on those I haven’t tried od yet but lots of ppl are saying how hard it is lol. It’s my dream to be able to shred well enough to play aviator 😂😂
Interesting take on those tracks. I have to agree on a lot of those . What about reverie?
@@lucasmonteiro600 never tried it
Where did u learn to play them plesase ive been loking for a long time
for goat tim's done a tutorial on his yt account, the rest you can find tabs on soundslice and there's a lot of tutorial videos/tabs as well for the different riffs which I followed :D
Its cool, how old are you bro?
20 now 19 when I recorded!
You still have mistakes but eventually good job bro 🤙
Where did you get the tabs for playing god?
I think I learnt it off a random yt vid googling the tabs but you can find them accurately written on soundslice
@@calebkinghymn thank you
I feel like your missing a lot of the slides in goat
You're probably right, it's been a while since I learnt it. Might have to relearn the riff and do a one year improvement vid on it
wheres the ego death one ?
when i get a 7 string ego death for sure :D
@@calebkinghymn hehe will be waiting for it
what guitar is this
i used ibanez rg370ahmz and fender telecaster 75th edition diamond
The audacity 25/
I'd totally learn it if I had an 8 string, but everything but the solo looks kinda straightforward except for all the thumping? Pls correct me if I'm wrong tho I've never tried it
40oz😈
Idc how good at guitar you are, that tone you chose for G.O.A.T is a hatecrime to music
HAHAHA nah ur actually right bro ngl TT
personally for me, playing god is kinda easy tho
OD tho
m-m-metronome
40oz should be 10 no excuse, LIKE AFTER YOU PLAY IT YOUR FOREARM ISN'T EVEN A FOREARM ANYMORE
I guess 40 oz is hardest for me
legitimately good try but you need more practice
also i see youre a beginner and im not even a guitarist so i mean no hate, good on you for going afer polyphia riffs, god speed
@@renecastrejon4286 you don't even qualify to speak lol

@@renecastrejon4286”beginner”
I’d consider myself a intermediate level guitarist and I couldn’t even dream of playing what he is currently
it's excercise, not a song
Most of the riffs are based off of simple catchy melodies like most pop songs, just with flex to make it interesting
tbh g.o.a.t. took me like 30mins to learn edit: playing god is super ez lol
