    Ya know one of the nicest things about this new shop is the fact that Esther spends so much time out there with you now. We saw a little bit of her in the temp shop while this one was being built but we rarely saw her in the old shop. Now she has become a big part of this channel with her commentary and being the camera person.

    You’re doing fine. Fiberglass is easy. Just remember the resin is just glue . It isn’t structural. If the resin goes too thick, it can break. Just fill the weave. Looks great! I spent thirty years building and repairing boats in Maine. Loved to build with glass!

    So with your hub cap plan. If you 3D print at the expected size, get everything to fit as you want, then scale it up by about 6% and print it again for your casting pattern, that should be about right to compensate for the shrinkage of the aluminium as it cools. Love the idea of making car parts out of beer cans generally! One of mine has them as UJ cap shims :D

    A six inch roller to apply, finish with the roller that you used to lay flat. The white plastic roller is called a bubble roller, it allows you to remove air bubbles and raised areas. The tape will leave the resin sticky when you remove it, the adhesive causes it.

    On your overlap , torn edges blend in way better than cut edges and are also stronger. A straight line can become a weak spot, a flexability tension point . Like when doing concrete you put a line in it so that if it cracks it will crack in a straight line at that point

    For a guy who hasn't had much experience with fiberglass, you certainly jumped in with both feet! I worked in a body shop for tractor trailers and got to where fiberglass didn't make me itch at all, and I really love the smell of polyester resin. I'm sure you'll get plenty of free advice on how to do it, but you did really good in my opinion.

      I give him credit... for never having done fibreglassing it was surely baptism by fire. Polyester resin sucks... especially if using a chopped matting. Epoxy with a woven cloth would have been a better way to go in this case, and more forgiving. Not to mention I'm sure that was a waxed resin which unless you sand off the wax layer after it's cured, it will not stick to itself. Epoxy will stick to itself.

    You're doing a fine job with that fiberglass Brent! As you know bodywork takes time, lots of time. I've been doing it all my life and I'm impressed with your work here. Listen to this story years ago early 90's I had to fix a 72 Stingray Vette that fell off a lift. It was in a 100 pieces. Like putting a puzzle back together. Hi Brent. There is a product called talc. You mix it with resin and it takes the consistency of bondo. In raw form, it really does look like "talc powder" or a fine flower. It allows you to fill imperfections and then SAND IT!

  • @dennisbjones
    @dennisbjones 3 місяці тому

    Brent, just in case you missed my comment on the last video have a look at "lost PLA casting". You could print the bullet center caps and the prints become the mould. As you pour the casting, the print just burns away with the molten metal replacing the print. No cope and drag, just print the pouring basin, riser, gate etc as part of it (or separately and glue it to the cap) and bury it in the sand and pack it.

    I like to apply polyester material from the fabric store and stretch it over the edges. apply the resin to the fabric, then when its dry you have a solid base for the mat to have more support. The way you did it will work. It just tends to use more resin than necessary. You're fine!

  • @Richard56er

    I've worked on fibreglass car repairs before. The strongest way to apply it is to do it in smaller patches and overlap each piece as you go. It also takes the shape better and no bunching up. As you apply the matting you can dab it into the crevasses with your brush. The matting gets more supple as it soaks up the resin and will stay in place.

    If there's a next time cut the matt into strips, place on a board and wet it out then put in place and keep going. don't try to get it around the edges. For the edges bias cut strips of glass cloth and they will wrap around. I think you'll have fun with foam. The original Weymann bodies used wadding covered with a fitted calico and any lumps in the wadding could be moved with a long needle. then your vinyl goes on. Oh yes, and GRP like that is unlikely to be fully waterproof. I hope that helps.

    Hello Brent & Ester: Kudos to you and your first " Large Area" fiberglass application. It looks good. Unless you have worked with the product it is very difficult to explain the issues. The matting or cloth lays nicely before resin application, then once properly wetted does not cooperate nicely. Having it roll over a corner and bond well to opposite side without sagging is a frustrating experience. You seemed to handel it well. The positive is that it can be done in layers which in most cases increases the strength of the final product. I am looking forward to seeing the finished product. Wearing an appropriate fume mask would not be a bad idea. Uncomfortable yes, but benefit worth the short term discomfort. Keep the videos coming.

    You probably should have watched some of the boat repair channel videos before starting this to learn the different materials and steps for fiberglass work. For instance, since you generally need the absence of air for the base resin to cure, you usually need either a waxed resin that seals itself applied to the mat, or a gelcoat afterwards to seal the resin for the resin to harden fully - you have mentioned neither. I would certainly see if the work you have done needs to be gel coated before going any further.

  • @thercbarn5001
    @thercbarn5001 3 місяці тому

    Looks pretty good to me! Me and a buddy made a fiberglass hood for a kit car. Smaller peices seem to make it easier to lay out. That roller you have is to spread out the epoxy so it goes a little further. Another trick is to use toilet paper to absorb the resin up. The strength comes from the glass not the epoxy. If you have any low spots just fill in with another layer of glass. I don't think it'll be really necessary because of the foam over the top. Mike
