      I accidentally came across your channel in the recommendations for A50. In the unofficial information environment, all Russian pilots swore at the BUK M3 operators (the same "Fighterbomber"). There was information that the AI system that was tested on the S-350 was implemented in other SAMs, the result is friendly fire. Ukrainian propaganda immediately after the incident attributed defeat to the patriot. I apologize in advance for the possibly incorrect text, I translated it through a translator.

    • @T-SUS
      @T-SUS 7 місяців тому

      And further. During the defeat, both the A50 and Il22 were flying on a catch-up course relative to the front line. Both by means of recording objective control, and by photo of the Il22 with the damaged tail section of the aircraft. Not a single modification of the Patriot's missiles on a catch-up course would reach such a distance (80 miles is head-on). It was either a BUK M3 or S300PM2 from Crimea

    • @Cody38Super
      @Cody38Super 2 місяці тому

      @t-sus - America always undersells its systems. The range of the Patriot is a considerable amount greater than advertised. Only Russia claims "our system will hit a humming bird at 500 kilometers! " when in reality it will hit an office building at 200 kilometers. A Pac-2 is a proximity fuse weapon, Pac-3 is "hit to kill" and has a cockpit bias, meaning NO PILOT HAS EVER SURVIVED a PAC-3. What kind of idiots puts an untested AI system in the field, in a war, then sends an irreplaceable asset in it's vicinity with zero way for it to identify itself as friendly and hopes it doesn't get shot at....?....bullshit! Any American weapons advertised range, you can add 30% to, no problem. This whole conflict, what have we seen.....EVERYTHING RUSSIAN NOT LIVING UP TO RUSSIA'S CLAIMS, WITHOUT FAIL! What else have we seen, EVERYTHING AMERICAN OUT PERFORMING IT'S EXPECTATIONS. From HIMARS to ATACMS to PATRIOT to BRADLEY'S to JAVELINS...so is it Russia trying to embarrass itself and destroy its reputation beyond repair by having the world's worst weapon systems and aircraft, or once again, America's weapons systems are doing what we claim they can and more??? I'll leave it up to you.

    The Gepard is a modified Leopard 1. The Leopard 1's were lightly armored on the sides trying to keep the weight of the entire vehicle down. It was a very fast tank for its time though. IIRC, it had a top speed around 70km/h. The use of HEAT (High Explosive Anti Tank) ammo during that time period put heavy armor out of vogue with a preference for speed. The employment idea was front to the enemy where it had decent armor and then relocate after a firing a few rounds. That's why the Gepard and Leopard 1 are easy to damage from the sides, the armor there is thin, barely better than the side armor of a Bradley.
    From what I've been able to dig up on the A-50 event, Ukraine has spent the last two weeks or so destroying radars on the Crimean peninsula with SU-24 strikes and missile strikes. The Russian radar coverage was so depleted from that, that the Russians were forced to bring the A-50 in closer to shore to maintain an accurate picture. Supposedly, they used the S-300 radar as the spotter as Ukraine is out of S-300 missiles so the Ukrainian S-300 isn't considered a "real threat" anymore. Once the A-50 entered into the kill box, the S-300 notified the Patriot battery, the Patriot turned on its radar, fired the missile, then turned off the Patriot radar and the whole Patriot unit packed up and moved north out of range of artillery as fast as they could.

    I suspect the patriot has a longer than advertised range.Also, the range against non-manueverable/slower aircraft such as AWACS should be longer than against fighters/cruise missiles. The patriot might've been further back than you simulated..

      I agree the max range is probably further than reported, but I doubt the larger plane would increase the range of the the Patriot system. Sure it would be easier to detect from further out, and sure the probability of kill is most likely higher due to it being unable to maneuver like a fighter jet, but the true Range is determined by the missiles themselves. Sure the effectiveness is increased by the larger plane, but not the range (which is probably unreported)

  • @LordOceanus

    Based on the best information I can find the A-50U uses a radar designated Shmel. The radar is an S band system with a 10x1.6m antenna. Opposite the radar is the IFF antenna, Command Radio Antenna, and probably a counterweight so it is the same size and mass as the radar. It takes 10 seconds for a complete rotation.
    The onboard computer is 4 Argon-30 units. These are old systems with each CPU being 32bit and capable of 600,000 operations per second, 24Kbits RAM, 256kbits ROM. Overall very old (late 70s early 80s vintage) and low powered which will put a limit on the radar capability. Please note that these have been supplemented by a digital data processor so its no longer a mostly analogue system.
    The Shmel radar can apparently track 45 targets simultaneously (compared to the estimated 100+ for an E-3).
    The A-50U has reportedly been given an upgraded Shmel-2 radar however data on that is harder to find. Since the Radome is unchanged it probably uses the same antenna as the older system and just upgrades processing.
    Overall I would not expect it to be capable of effectively tracking an inbound missile and its slow sweep rate of 10s means even if it can that missile will be on top of them by the time it swings back around.
    Edit: Fixed 1 Typo

    I've heard a rumor it could have been the first deployment of a "Frankensam" S-300/Patriot. Part of the Frankensam project was to allow S-300 radars to guide Patriot missiles. The rumor goes the russian flight detected an S-300 radar emitting but did not react since, allegedly, Ukraine has no missiles in the S-300 complex that could reach them from the contact line, which left them blindsided when a PAC-2 came for them instead.
    No idea how valid this rumor is, but it's an interesting hypothesis.

    • @ConReese
      @ConReese 8 місяців тому

      They would have been able to detect the missile type by its speed. Patriot missiles go much slower than the s300 missiles. Would have been obvious it was a patriot missile

    • @lukewhitehouse4103
      @lukewhitehouse4103 8 місяців тому +4

      The Patriot is data linked with the US/Coalition EAWACS aircraft. The A-50 is a massive target and a huge target is easy to see. This will not have been a Ukrainian driven operation, we all know how incredibly valuable these aircraft are. I also find it very convenient it happened a day after Britain landed more supplies to Ukraine.

    • @Gregnier
      @Gregnier 8 місяців тому +2

      You can also watch Globalhawks and RC135s loitering around the borders on commercial sites like Flightradar24. So the US E3s or GHawks that DON'T have active transponders could have easily fed information to the Ukrainians.

    • @brookwhiteman9810
      @brookwhiteman9810 8 місяців тому +7

      What your describing isn't a rumor, so it turns out that in a similar area to where the A-50 got hit a few hours before there was an SU-35 which launched a KH-59 toward Kherson area, as the pilot was launching the missile a S300 radar picked him up and he dived down and left the area, its known that this happened because that pilot reported it and he was unsure if a actual missile was launched at him, hours later the A-50 and IL-22M were hit. So yeah the most likely theory is that Ukraine used a cheaper less advanced radar as part of a FrankenSAM setup and then launched the PAC-2 at those aircraft. A day before this happened our defence said that we would share intel with Ukraine's defence and thats likely how Ukraine knew when was the right moment to strike.

    I think that the patriot's radar was deeper in the rear, because it sees further, and the launcher was pulled closer to the front. The launcher does not emit radiation. It is theoretically possible to link them together and hit the A-50 and Il-22

    • @teronarinen8030
      @teronarinen8030 7 місяців тому

      Nothing theoretical about linking the radar that is further out and launcher in the front. Patriot system has a modular/distributed architecture and Launching Station can be connected to Engagement Control Station via either fiber optic or VHF radio link. The masts in transmitting antennas (in a component called Antenna Mast Group) can be extended to be over 30 meters high, this indicates range at least in tens of kilometers.

    I can't see Ukraine moving a Patriot battery that close to the front lines. I'm leaning more towards it being an air-to-air missile -- or, and hear me out on this, an AGM-88 HARM. I know... "But they are for shooting at SAMs on the ground" yes, they are. However, they home onto radars. Hitting a giant, slow moving aircraft which has an absolutely MASSIVE radar emitting insane energy with an AGM-88, does not seem all that far-fetched to me -- and we know for a fact that Ukraine was given, and has used AGM-88's.

      @@DiegoHernandez-bh4sw The AGM-88 has a 13nmi range from low-level firing; that's worse case scenario. Ukrainian fighters could have flown over the Black Sea near Odesa, went South and then turned back East where they could have gotten within a few miles of the A-50 and launched.
      It seems far fetched, but both sides are flying their aircraft like 100 feet off the ground, and successfully avoiding radar while doing it. I think it's very possible, and even more plausible than a Patriot Battery being moved right into the front lines.

      They may not be exactly suited to our needs, but they are still the best in the world by a wide margin. The E-7 is also currently the best in it's class, which is why so many are on order.

      And also, yes, not the focus of video. Yes the E-7 is a glorious AWACS system, but we only have 6. For a gosh darn massive country. There have been talks, but not much more. All 6 of them flying at once could cover all of Australia's Northern Coast and then some, but defending them is another issue, which is navy, which is not the point of the video.
      Plus, 72 or more F35's are a formidable force, but 'ahead of the rest of the world' might be an overstatement.

    • @AusExplorer
      @AusExplorer 8 місяців тому +1

      @@interastra367 Ok so, we don't need to cover everything with E-7s, they're more of a tactical asset than a strategic one for our use case specifically.
      We have an over-the-horizon-radar network [due to complete stage 6 upgrades soon] that gives us days of advanced warning about what is coming our way. Combine that with the geosynchronous sat network operated out of Pine Gap [that has recently completed the first trials of link 16 testing] and there is no way to launch a surprise attack on Australia. So AWACS would only be deployed in areas that need real-time coverage to that degree. Also don't underestimate their capability, there is a reason the USA can afford to reduce their AWACS fleet by one third when they replace their E-3s with E-7s.
      As to the comment about ahead of the rest of the world, obviously I'm referring to potential adversaries, I can't think of a single potential enemy air-force that could come all the way to Australia and go head-to-head with 70 F-35As and win.
      We can debate about our ability to sustain the fight in the long term with relation to missile stockpiles, but I've no doubt we'd be fine for the amount of time It'd take to get allied reinforcements and expedited munitions resupply.
      Additionally we are moving towards local production [to a greater or less degree] of several missile types.

The real reason they aren't practical is simply that in order to do significant enough damage to something moving at any significant speed requires quite a lot of power being pumped into it (so that you can deliver enough in the very limited time you can accurately lase the target), and at least for now no systems have that sort of energy density. There's a reason that they were first investigated recently for use on nuclear powered ships… and why a couple of decades ago the research was based on "one shot" chemical lasers, where the energy is stored in a crystalline structure ahead of time and thus can be incredibly densely stored.

    I wanted to make a request for a fictional but potential scenario.
    You and the boys are relaxing at RAF Lossiemouth, and receive a QRA, But this isn't any QRA. The Russian North Sea fleet and a full air wing have decided to try their luck against the UK. They have managed to get under the radar of the Nordic states and are positioned 100/150 miles north east of Scotland, your task would be to repel the Russian onslaught using our primary defenses for the UK, the RAF, and maybe a couple naval assets like type 45s stationed in the North. It would be cool to see it as a fictional but realist-ish scenario where you have to scramble and protect our skies over Scotland. A good old crumpet Vs. Vodka situation.
    Would love to see this! And think it would be a fun, tricky event (maybe even a couple F15s) can join in from our partner bases!

    I'm not sure I agree with the Patriot theory. Patriot instructor, Habitual Line Crosser, has mentioned several times about which part of the aircraft Patriot targets to ensure success. We don't know for certain re the A-50, however the frag pattern on the IL-22 isn't on the correct part of the aircraft irl. Patriot, specifically the PAC-2 missiles, target the cockpit area by coming down on top of it as it did in the video. It does this to ensure the kill. If you're in a fighter, you'd be ejecting up into the missile and it's frag. There's a reason no one is known to have survived a Patriot interception. I also don't think they'd want to risk moving the battery so close to the front, even though the range and speed of the missiles is much further and faster than advertised. Might be wrong, but from what HLC has said about Patriot and how it targets aircraft, I have some doubts.

    There is absolutely no way Patriot was moved so close to the frontline. It would not survive there for more than 10 minutes with its radar active. Zero change of such scenario. Probably something else happened.

      They would keep it off until they had confirmation of a hit profile target in range. This aircraft was flying near enough to the shore that a civilian on the ground could easily have seen it and sent that information off. Turn it on get the lock fire and turn it off.

      I’m perplexed: “Saying that you shot down your $330,000,000 aircraft is preferable to having the enemy shoot it down??” It sounds a lot worse to me that they are so incompetent that they shoot their own planes down. Perplexing??

      @@alcoholfree6381 I dunno, this is the only logical explanation of what's happened. Ukraine don't have capability to shoot it down on that range.

    Is it normal the the radar dish on top is rotating counter-clockwise but the radar screen in top-left seems to be rotating clockwise?
