Vintage 1965 Fender Twin Reverb...Can it do HEAVY METAL???

  • In this video we'll answer the age-old question...can a Blackface Fender Twin Reverb AB763 play METAL? We'll show several mods you can make to your vintage Fender Twin Reverb to get MASSIVE amounts of overdrive, distortion, and high gain tones.
    [RE: Reverb Bypass "Super Ice Cube" Overdrive Mod]
    Since publishing this video, some have asked whether the Reverb Bypass Overdrive Mod will smoke the reverb transformer by changing the load. Let's address that. First, the Input tank transducer is about 77 ohms DC resistance. That DC resistance isn't going away when you short the jacks to bypass the tank. You're bypassing the tank with the AC signal, but you are not removing the DC load the transformer secondary is seeing at any point. It's still there, and it's being put into parallel with the grid leak resistor from the recovery tube, but if you do the math, it doesn't change the DC resistance the transformer secondary sees between its leads. Using ohm's law, the parallel resistance of 77 ohms and 220K ohms is still 76.9731 Ohms. The only way the tank would see a drastically different DC load is if someone turned the mod pot into the "Bypass" position and then unplugged the reverb tank from the "Reverb Output" jack on the amp. This would suddenly remove the 77 ohms of DC resistance on the transformer secondary and it would see 220K ohms instead. So one should be cautious not to do this as I don't know what the outcome would be in that case. Probably nothing if you didn't leave it long, but might smoke the transformer if you did.

    Brad, this is YOUR MOMENT that changed your fortune!!! I have a factory Fender Evil Twin and it never sounded ANYTHING like this no matter what I tried!!! It's the reason it's buried under other amps and pedals in my living room corner for several years after I bought it and gave up on tube distortion from a Fender amp. GREAT JOB Brad...your future is now secured and only going upwards and onwards!!! Dan G. :):):)

    Twin reverb on steroids. Your understanding of schematics is mind warping. Especially liking this mod because the amp can at anytime revert to its classic fender twin settings/sounds. The demos you made absolutely prove this, and was a real treat for me, watching the video. Great to see you back, in any of your incarnations.

    Wow! This is the video I've been hoping you'd make for years dude. Always knew the Twin could do it all with a few mods but I've never seen this particular combination of mods together and BOY do they work a treat! Thank you so much for sharing this content Brad. Going to spend all day tomorrow modding my old SF.

    Wow! Just Wow! That in impressive as hell, from the great opening to the clear explanation of the internals of the amp, the mods and the honest inclusion of your errors-and their reason along with your great humor this has to be my favorite video of yours to date. This should be at or near the top of "The List of The Greatest UA-cam Videos" The amp and musical demo at the end way the best topper too, You included many great styles of my favorites (Black Sabbath, Ozzy, Iron Maiden, Metallica Rainbow, Dio etc.) From lawn equipment to amp magic you always impress. Thank You. 🤯💯👍👏

    Badass Brother. You're a genius and very talented. Although I own quite a few amps in my music room, I don't own any Fender Amps currently. Fender makes amazing amps, no doubt, just not for me. My favorite types of amps are Plexi's and Modded Plexi Amps....Friedman, Marshall, and Metropoulos, along with Soldano SLO's and a Mark V Series Mesa Boogie. My favorite amp Fender made, that is no longer available to buy is a Fender Prosonic with dual cascading gain. It was badass, sounded amazing, and was Fender's answer to Marshall. My favorite all time speakers to play through are UK Made Greenbacks.....The best speakers to play Plexi/Modded Plexi Amps through, imho. My favorite speaker cab combination is 2 UK Made Greenbacks on Top, with 2 Vintage 30's on the bottom. Combination of those 2 speakers sounds killer. Much Love and Respect From Sonny in New Orleans, Louisiana.

    Dude, your technical prowess is only surpassed by your musical talents. It's a pleasure to watch both, and for someone like me who has been with you since day one, the growth on the chops is very fun to follow. Whenever I see a cool lick or phrase from ANY guitarist I bookmark the video into a special folder so I can go back, watch it in quarter speed and figure out what's happening. I probably have a dozen of your videos in there so far. This one's going into the bin as well!

    I cringed when you mentioned that you put "more robust" tubes in... was hoping that you didn't drop in 7027A's, as they can require wiring modification to the tube sockets. If going for a direct drop-in that is more robust than a 6L6GC (@35W per tube), go with 7581A's. I run a set of those in my 1978 Peavey Mace head, biased them up at about 60%, and it sounds glorious! I will say that the advantage of 7027A's is that they can withstand higher plate voltages, up to 600V per tube. Keep up the awesome videos, my man!! Love it!

    • @TheGuitologist
      @TheGuitologist  6 місяців тому +1

      They would work fine if I wanted to rewire that Pin 1 and Pin 6. But it's just too much to put in 4x terminal strips just for that purpose. Still kicking myself that I didn't see that Pin 6 tied to Grid 1. Really stupid oversight. Won't happen again, I assure you that.

    • @ExitThirteen
      @ExitThirteen 6 місяців тому +1

      @@TheGuitologist Oh yeah, they would absolutely work fine with just little bit of rewiring on the sockets, I 100% agree. Being as I've experimented heavily with output tubes and such, it just kinda made me cringe for a minute there when you put in the 7027A's, then you got "the pop" (arc over)... I've been there and done that too, man. It was an honest mistake. The amp came out top notch, and your drumming is solid!

  • @rickya3877
    @rickya3877 6 місяців тому +2

    Cool vid...I have a mid 70's Ampeg V2 that runs 7027A's...from what I've heard,the extra pin is to spread out or dissipate the heat which is good because they run at ridiculously high voltages on this particular model...the original Magnavox/Sylvania tubes are STILL running strong..a testament to the quality of those tubes

    I have seen those GE dry electrolytic caps in blackface Bassman and Bandmaster amps from the Mid-late 60's (circa 66-68). They could have been replacements from service back in the day but as you saw the date codes, seems to be period correct. Due for replacement fer sure regardless. Those xfmr brackets are pretty sketchy.....ya never know what you might run into.....I've seen worse and wielder things...keeps life interesting don't it!?. Good job! Cheers!

    I swear I have ESP. The Guitologist pops into my head every once in a while so I do a search and sure enough there's a recently posted video. Good thing since UA-cam never sends me a notification.

I'm super impressed with your playing!
    Oh I recently picked up a '93 Blues DeVille... Will these mods work on it???

      Thanks for watching. Haven’t looked at the Blues Deville lately. Not sure what mods I’d recommend on that one.

    I made such an aluminium strap on a 1975 sf twin (a little better I swear). the choke ears were broken and it was bouncing under the chassis. The customer played the amp in this condition several gigs before bringing it to my workshop. Funny story. Love your videos!

    Marshall gain on a Twin Reverb. Pretty damn cool Brad. I also tend to install 1-ohm resistors on cathode to ground, especially on EL34s as they have a nasty habit of shorting cathode to ground when the tube craps out. The 1-ohm resistor has two functions. First it provides an easy measurement point for cathode current, like you said. Second, it works like a fuse, which you just provided a phenomenal example of. Better than burning up wires, resistors, etc. which does happen.

    • @TheGuitologist
      @TheGuitologist  6 місяців тому +1

      True on the fuse function. Many amps have actual fused cathodes on the output tubes, which is very nice indeed.

    I have ice cubes. I used them with my deluxe reverb for a clean boost and took the tank out. I used an adm 256 for verb and delay back then. I pretty much had a steel player rig but with a guitar and a Fender 1x12 instead of a Nashville 400. I was obsessed with learning steel parts but never got into the benders.
