Agreed. The fast version though was released as a single in UK and Australia long before Rio came out. The band hated the song, so reworked it for inclusion on the then forthcoming Rio album.
There's this guy named Paul Elam that I told this to once. Then he he lead a campaign of hate towards me. Then he called me a fagot, but I guess that's not uncommon online... Great song though.
The single version (The fast version) Reached the No 14 in the UK charts in December 1981. if only this Version from Rio Album was a single, Surely would of been better that peak of no 14!! Still i prefer this................
I used to like the single version. It was also released here in Australia and reached No 10. However, Duran Duran have always stated they didn't like the song which makes you wonder why they bothered recording it. The re-worked version on Rio was their attempt at improving a song they didn't like. I agree with you, the album version is ten times better. The USA album version "Carnival Mix" is also very good.
Beats too loud and fast that suppresses right brain function putting you in a Hypnotic Trance. That song could of been so much better than it is. Lyrics should be clear and easy to comprehend and to know exactly what is sung. All music is Freak ma son Cult CON Troll ed. WitchCraft and Spells are Deliberately put in All music unfortunately.
3:54 Yeah, defence, check 20 Yeah bitch, listen, yeah, this is how I like it Teenage floats on top Yeah, settle down Yes, go on, right over it we go Shot down when we take the bullets and roll back down He ain't got promises 'round that sound Hey you, where'd ya got it? I did not get it man You're in it, lets do, let's do it, I'm ready to go
I really can't understand why the band themselves hate this song so much. I know the lyrics are a bit on the gibberish side but that goes for a lot of Duran Duran songs. The tune itself was always one of my favourites on Rio - until I started liking the long hated Save A Prayer only rated The Chauffeur and Hold Back The Rain more highly!
first of all you are probably referring to the newer black eyed peas and the way they kind of went techno, they're old songs like where is the love have a lot of meaning and are good, plus this video only has 116 likes, so you cant really brag about it having no dislikes, even if you think the black eyed peas suck, a lot of their videos have more likes than this song has views i am a big fan of Duran Duran but don't hate on newer bands even if some of them are bad
that's why I liked being a pre-teen in 1984....I was influenced by attractive MEN w1ho could put out slick videos AND pay their own instruments VERY well....love them
When I bought the album back in '82, there was a different version of this song on it - one with an echoy "Broadway" verse in it. I no longer have the album and can't find that particular version of the song.
I was turned on to Duran Duran by MTV - back when they showed a concert on Saturday night. I was amazed; never heard anything like it in my life.. Bought their first record shortly thereafter and the rest is history! As a teen I covered my walls with their posters - which I still have! :)
@IIIIdepechemodeIIII; This *is* the version that appeared on the original UK and US releases of the Rio album. I have the UK CD of Rio, and it has this one it. Apparently later versions of the album sold in the US have remixed versions of some tracks, including this one- that's probably what you're thinking of. BTW, an even earlier version of this song was released as a single some time before the album came out. That one is quite different- more strings, much faster and.... not as good!
It's because Elton John, who was their secret manager at the time, had censured some of the lycrics that seemed explicit. Duran Duran was considered quite a groundshaking and extravagant band at their time. They had several protest groups that were trying to shut them down, thankfully their fans showed their support and proved to the UN that the band were legit.
I preferred them to Spandau. Who were good but I thought those guys were a bit too suave. These guys had a lot more color to their sound. I mean just listen to this. It takes you places. I later got into the Sex Pistols :)
@nickthechorleyboy My friend had Rio from overseas and the rap in the bridge was not edited as in this version...They said in an interview that there were so many edits and remixes of their material they couldn't even keep track themselves...
I had this album in the 80's (1983 i think) 15 years later i found a cassette of the same albun in my wifes collection but the lyrics on this track were different anyone know why?????
John Taylor's bass!!
Tracey K badass bassist!🤘🏻
El mejor
That damn Bass tho.
it's a party with Duran Duran
+Brett Wyatt yes it is,your so right brett
Both versions are Brilliant!!!
Still the best version.
This is still the best version......the other version is ridiculous...
+Space Camp Really? I've always preferred the single version. I've never been a big fan of this version.
I so agree. The fast version destroys the music and the lyrics.
Agreed. The fast version though was released as a single in UK and Australia long before Rio came out. The band hated the song, so reworked it for inclusion on the then forthcoming Rio album.
This is definitely the best version. It works better at this tempo.
It works way better with the entire album mood
I'm on 45, between 6th and Broadway
***** Fer sure... one of my fav DD lyrics of all time
ReNoirIN Back in the 80's I had a cut with that whole rap in the break and now I can find that version anywhere....
+adsicks Do what? I can't make sense of that comment.
you might be thinking of the US album version, aka the Kersh mix, or 'carnival' mix
Daxter5150 and Broadway and Broadway and Broadway! Forever
There's this guy named Paul Elam that I told this to once. Then he he lead a campaign of hate towards me. Then he called me a fagot, but I guess that's not uncommon online... Great song though.
Thank god they were a part of my youth
TheRasputin67 My senior year in high school 😎

This album came out in 1982 and I was 11- years-old. It was and still is wonderfully awesome.
+Erica Wynn I was 11 too :D and it was love at first listen and sight, ie their videos.

God I love playing the hell out of this track!
LONG LIVE THE 80s!!
I always preferred the album version.
I will love Duran Duran's music til the day I die. Especially this album, and their latest, AYNIN
....NUMBER OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONE!!!!!!!
Never made No 1. Only No. 14 in UK and No. 10 in Australia in 1981. Never released as a single in USA.
He's referring to the lyrics if you listen closely to the song.
Such a great track that wasn't played 10 billion times on the radio....love the deeper Duran Duran cuts.
Duran duran and B52s should play Superbowl why not? 🌴
Then maybe I'd actually watch the superbowl...
The single version (The fast version) Reached the No 14 in the UK charts in December 1981. if only this Version from Rio Album was a single, Surely would of been better that peak of no 14!! Still i prefer this................

yeah the best one was the US album mix where he yells "SEVEN UP" 3 times
My first album I ever brought ! On vinyl ! played it over and over . Brilliant
Heard this record for the first time on Radio Caroline, what a great song, and so true. I got my own way...
I prefer this version over the original Rio track
This is fuckin' good!!!!
such a classic album thanks for the post
The older I get the more I appreciate the music of this group!
absolutely brilliant.....
they should have a 80's tour with duran , missing persons band and others. 😜
Its all about the bass !!!
Kind of. Always tuned into John Taylor's bass summer '83, but Andy's guitars are the business in the outro
oh yeah, i was there, Huntington beach fountain Vally new port beach.
this was definitely the best version!!
Does anybody have a Nagel print? I haven't seen one since my ex had it on the bedroom wall. The cover art reminds me of good music and good times :)

Amazing that this album was released as early as May 1982.
"Number ONE!"

You're in it, lets do, let's do it, I'm ready to go
once again john taylor plays a flawless power bass line

As you say, they're no more gibberish than other Duran Duran songs.

God is good for music like this Christ!!!
My tune!!!!!
Duran Duran great bass v Japan majestic synth. What a rivalry.
For some reason I had this song in my head all day. Glad I could find it on UA-cam. Thanks Nathan Stark for the upload !
テープに録音してテープが擦り切れるまで聞いた。だからLPレコードは綺麗なもんだ。

Now I finally get what Desire in the ʻSandmanʻ comics looked so familiar from...
Going to school in the rain. Listening to this song. Ah the 80s. What a time. Todays society sux.
Much better version. I was 13 years-old. Magical memories.
Duran! Duran!!! Thanks for Rio!! Magical times!!! And got all the lady's!!!!
