I love the mahjong scene, cause Rachel gives up a tile that Elenore needs to win, then proceeds to show what her hand was, if she kept it she would have won by a lot, she was basically saying "you win, but remember it is because I let you win"

As someone who knows mahjong, Rachel couldn’t have known that it was Eleanore’s winning piece, and it wasn’t even Eleanore’s turn, the other lady could have taken the tile if she needed it. What Rachel did was just give up a winning tile, but NOT necessarily for Eleanore.
@@MT-zu2uq yes it was. There might be some suspension of disbelief, since you know how to play, but Rachel teaches game theory. The end of the game was very intentional and we're supposed to believe she knew, for the purpose of the scene.

Remember Rachel in her intro scene; the woman knows her game theory. She knew, at minimum, that there was a VERY HIGH PROBABILITY of that tile being the one Eleanor needed for the win.

For me, that last scene, when Rachel has that moment looking at Eleanor across the party - just a subtle nod of acknowledgement, not saying everything is going to be hunky dory with them, but a moment of respect. SUCH a powerful performance with such subtle expressions.
That’s where I cracked cuz I can understand where the mother was coming from with her past with his side of the family. So just seeing her give her that nod, the floodgates opened honey

YES, if your open to it I highly suggest the books, they're so fun and loaded. They go all over the world, there's amazing food, fashion, plots- and way more Astrid who's my favorite character and if they adapt the next two movies you'll see way more of her
Awkwafina was the real one in this movie tho. She was such a good friend and fabulous. Also living for the shade in this movie, felt like I was visiting my family overseas
I was actually mad when it was Nick who'd called Rachel's mom and not Peik Lin, because I really wanted it to be a moment where Rachel's best friend knew what she needed. I get that it needed to be Nick who made the call so we knew he wasn't an irredeemable asshole, but still.
Much as every family needs its rainbow sheep, a part of me is sad she couldn't end up with cousin Oliver. I mean the way those two teamed up for the fashion montage-! Come on.

I love this movie so much. Honestly, the whole drama this movie brought reminded me of telenovelas, which I appreciated but yknow. Michelle Yeoh was a childhood idol and she never disappoints in any role she’s in. God I love her. I really wanted to hate her in this movie but her being her, I couldn’t.

Fun fact! In the book Alastair actually isn’t an asshole like he’s portrayed in the movie through his few moments. He’s pretty chill tbh. Also, in the book Eleanor isn’t the one who calls her husband to buy the hotel, it’s actually her sister in law Felicity who calls her own husband and he purchases the hotel. Eleanor in the movie is very different from the book.

Also, a short story: when this movie came out I went with my then-bf to the theaters to watch it. When Astrid's scene with her husband came up, my ex let out this sort of ohhh/oof sound. I just thought he was impressed with Astrid's takedown, just like I was... turns out he was cheating on me at the time 😬. I found out two months later and I was like, huh. Many things make sense now.

I love this and the book so much, but I wish they would have explained Michael's affair better. In the books, he set up an entire scheme of an "affair" (he wasn't actually cheating) because he wanted an easy way out of Astrid's family.

The rich circle are all eyes on Nick's future partner because he is the only male grandson in his father's family line and that's why he is favored greatly by his grandmother and how they're all critical of his partners. I'll take that list! I don't mind Romcoms and I like diversifying my tastes, and honestly I LOVE ZZAVID he's a bit boring when it comes to new shows and recommendations lol, I mean the horror genre is wild, but it's ehh for me, when you assume the worst and guess the plot and jumpscares (like I do) it feels very formulaic so it's best to figure out the formula for other genres and find gems . Sorry for the long comment, but anyways if you see this, I'll take that list.
