  • Laser iridotomy is a surgery that's used to prevent or control glaucoma. An ophthalmologist uses a laser to make a tiny hole in the iris (colored part) of the eye. This opening - usually the size of a pinhead - allows fluid to flow from behind the iris and out through the drainage angle.

Had this done today, was worried beforehand but shouldn’t have been, it all went very well. Hardly any discomfort and no complications. I read all the risks online and you get carried away with it, whereas most studies say these are rare. The hole is tiny and covered by my eyelid. I was having slight pain in the eye and it’s now gone. Now the pupil dilating drops have worn off, my vision is perfect after just two hours.

Be careful about this surgery. Ask about all the side effects before going ahead it. I had it done about two years ago, and I still see two fluorescent white lines in both eyes. They are very annoying.

If you're having a laser iridotomy done, it's usually because you've got acute angle closure glaucoma. If that's not treated, you'll lose your sight very quickly.

@@alexandertough2489 My eyes were healthy and I did not have glaucoma when he did the surgery on me. He said he did it to prevent it. Looking back, I don't think the procedure was necessary. There are a lot of online reviews about him pushing patients to have the procedure. I should have sought a second opinion back then.

@@cruiselover9903 I've not heard of it being done as a prophylactic procedure! I'd totally agree with you in that case - sorry to hear that you've had these side effects from a potentially unnecessary surgery.

do you know what position on your eye they poked the hole?

@@ambrosia1917 I don't know. It seems that the doctor is not competent, even unaware of the potential side effects

I am having this laser procedure not because of glaucoma but because of an ICL surgery to correct my -7.50 high myopia and astigmatism that will occur after this Iridotomy - I am nervous about this procedure, if something goes wrong I will not have the ICL and it would have been for nothing and my vision can even get worst that it is.

      How was it?

@@Jaichu47 It went well, but the laser procedure was more painful than the ICL. I had to go 2 times for the laser because it was hurting me too much (even with anestesia drops) they explained to me that because my eyes are very dark colored I needed a lot more shots than a lighter eye person would need. I did some drops for a week 4 times a day after each time I went there for the laser (to prevent infection). I had some bad nights with some pain coming and going but it went away. A month later I got my ICL and it was fast and simple, same drops after (3 times a day for a month) and I have to be very careful to not rub my eyes when washing (they got me some special wipes) and I use clear glasses during the day to prevent being hit on the eyes or touch it during the day - this is just for a month after the ICL). The first nights the lights were too bright and crazy but a week after it is all normal and my first consult (2 days after the ICL) my vision was already 20/20. They say it will probably get even better with time, my next consult will be 1 month after the ICL.
