The lack of talk about Beastars is undoubtably due to Netflix's misguided distribution and marketing model, especially with anime. They hoard the whole series until months after it finished airing in japan, then basically buried the release under the mountain of other stuff they put out, and do the bare minimum of marketing for it.

In general, I think their marketing is weird. Not just for anime. WIsh Dragon and Vivo from Sony were swept under the rug too. I literally saw no advertising before the release for both of those movies. Heck, even Mitchells vs. the Machines didn't have that much advertisement. This of course could be an issue that is caused by Sony but I highly doubt it

This. Netflix seems to hate the anime it hosts for some reason. I didn't even know season 2 was out until people started posting clips of it on youtube. Frankly, if it's not published/produced by Netflix itself, it gets swept under the rug like NO NO said.

Someone should really just shout to the world that you shouldn't spoil stuff in thumbnails and titles of UA-cam videos. I have had so many things that happened in season 2 spoiled for me. I went through watching like, "Wow, this would have been a great reveal, except for the fact that I already knew it was going to happen," or, in some cases, "Wow, I might have laughed at this if I didn't already know it was going to happen."

I think the reason people aren't talking about Season 2 of Beastars is simply because due to the success of the first season people went out nad bought the Manga which was several volumes in already, way ahead of the anime. So it could be people aren't talking about the anime because they already experienced the story from reading the Manga and so the anime doesn't hit as hard since they already experienced the plot. Where as with Season 1 the majority of people hadn't even herd of the Manga yet so we're experiencing the story first through the anime.

Adding to that, if they are anything like me, they could possible be less interested cause they've seen how it ends and, unfortunately its not good. S3 was confirmed recently and if its just gonna follow the Manga then I really wouldn't have much interest in it.

    • @BladedEdge123
      @BladedEdge123 3 роки тому +32

@@ZombiedWolf That's what killed my entire interest in the series. I did read ahead, and have done so plenty of on-going series with manga (MHA for example) typically that just gets my excited to see the manga animated, except when the manga ends up being bad or going sharply down in terms of quality. The arcs following the resolution of the murderer on campus arc, the series just goes in such a 180 direction IMO (in very much the same way/manner as MHA actually as that's another series I've dropped due to decline IMO of the manga's story) that, to me, it becomes an entirely different kind of story/narrative/genre even.
When you build something up to have one major setting and focus, and then dump that in favor of an entirely different one, of course some people are gonna drop the series/lose interest.

I feel like the issue with season 2 is mostly the pacing. The arc they cover is longer than should have really been done in the length of time they had. I think this comes out especially in Louis' story. Don't get me wrong I understand why they covered what they did with the season it would have felt incomplete if they hadn't finished where they did, the final fight with Riz. I actually enjoy the direction the second season went, I haven't read the manga at all so I very much was surprised by all the plot corners. The reveal that Louis was alive, at the start really got me, and then the sacrifice at the end, I was legitimately worried that Legosi stooped to the bear's level. Honestly I enjoyed it a lot for the character development and soul searching that Legosi went through. Yes Haru definitely could have used more screen time and been more active but I feel like the distance between the characters is necessary. It fits the whole idea of them trying to figure themselves out so that they can move forward with a relationship with as little difficulty/ shed blood as possible. So as I don't have any foresight in the plot, I think it would be kind of funny having Louis come back to the school with a prosthetic and with a "interesting" inside joke he makes snide remarks on.

Haru's lack of screentime is easily my biggest gripe with this season. Even if she didn't get much time with Legosi, I would have appreciated if she got SOME mini-arc so she didn't feel neglected.
Legosi's arc is all about coming into his own and coming to terms with his being a Carnivore, and reaching a deeper understanding between himself and those around him.
Louis' arc is about him deciding not to live his life the way adults expect him to, to be honest with himself and appreciate the friends he has.
Haru...Doesn't get an arc. She has some relationship problems with Legosi, she worries about Louis...But she does not change at all during this arc. She's still unsure about her future with Legosi, and is unhappy with his lack of attentiveness to her needs.
Even Juno got more of an arc that Haru...Even if it was accepting she's not cut out to be the Beastar and she's learning more about Louis. That's more than Haru got.

I think a good 90% of the reason why the last arc sucked so bad, was that Paru clearly rushed herself with the bullshit artificial “it will end on chapter 200!!!” Because she was still world-building, adding and dumping new characters and concepts until the end. I understand burn out, and wanting the series to be over already, but she’s starting a new manga now, and also kept doing beast compex?? You should have mentioned some key points here: Season 2 left out substantial scenes like how Legoshi met Jack, as well as Legoshi's relationship with his grandpa. Season 1 was more faithful, despite omitting material like the glimpse of Rokume the snake, or Louis pulling a gun on Bill. I felt season 2 really rushed the ending and made it unsatisfying, which unfortunately is how the entire manga ends.
Beastars takes place in an engrossing world, with captivating characters and relationships, and plenty of potential to be had. However, that potential tends to be squandered by poor writing, throwaway material, and lack of foresight. There is simply too many issues to be acceptable. But like I said, Beastars is strangely captivating. I still love it despite its glaring flaws and missed opportunities. There is something special about these animal characters and the struggles they have to go through in this overly conflicting world Paru Itagaki created. No ending, no matter how unsatisfying, will ever take away fr

I assume due to the changes in Season 2 material (setting up and foreshadowing later stuff), they're saving it for Season 3 so they'll have enough material for the 3rd Arc to fill all of season 3 (probably ending on Lego and Haru's date), since that's when the material is a lot more relevant as well.

I feel like the reason why the lack of conversation around beastars is how the story's subbed and dubbed viewers were essentially seeing the shows in two very separate times. As a result less people are talking about it cuz the viewers are essentially halved due to the release schedules. Instead of a huge amount of people hyped for the same show at once, you get two separate groups of people watching at different times. I remembered watching this show last year and a lot of subbed watchers can't make content around it because it might spoil dubbed fans. And now that it's been almost a year I think since its airing the hype is pretty much gone. This is on top of the fact that there's barely any marketing around it.

That's more than Haru got.

tbh this was pretty much how it was in the manga. But the way Haru's character was treated as the manga went on is on a long list of many many bad writing choices made. I personally think the manga's story devolved into a total dumpster fire. But it's apparently getting a third season?

I mean I' reading the manga and I don't recall there being any scenes Season 2 skipped over, even if the ending was rushed, the main bulk of the season seriously neglected their relationship. I am reading through the manga now and I am up to the point where Legosi is about to eat Louis' leg, so I hope the chapters leading into the next arc do some serious catching up to bring their relationship back to the fore.

Most of the buzz came when the series was first premiering and a lot of people were just watching it with fansubs it seems. I do wish she would have gotten more development in Season 2, but I also get why she didn't. There's also not a whole lot to do with her the way she ended on Season 1 without defying her development in the first season or being a generic conflicted love-interest and damsel in distress. She's the wrong character for the more intense stuff that happens in Season 2. I think she could have shown up a bit more, though, even if just for solo scenes or the like. I hate ships and think they're silly and nonsensical, I just don't care for her because she was done dirty by character development and turned out rather bland because of it, despite having a lot of potential. When I first saw it the ending infuriated me so much but after I read the manga I feel less salty about it, however it doesn’t change my opinion that Season 1 was better. One of my biggest problems was Riz’s reveal as the killer. It would’ve been more impactful if we actually got to know him before these events, but this is Paru Itagaki’s first series so I’ll cut her some slack. My biggest problem with Season 2 was Haru being put into the background. The story is supposed to mainly revolve around Legoshi’s relationship with her but it’s just shoved into the back burner, and it does the same in the following events after the end of Season 2. I hope for Season 3 they do some changes for that because I’d like to see more development in their relationship than what the manga did, and maybe they can work on the ending of the manga to while they’re at it because boy the ending had so many problems.

Well the climax, I can appreciate the layered symbolism within the sacrifices that both predator and prey made but... It just felt like the entire journey of Legoshi's training was wasted because he had to do the one thing he literally spent months of training to avoid, he barely even protested the idea, despite chastising the antagonist for doing this very thing, and the worst part it didn't even matter because the Police are the ones to deliver Justice, I sat there deflated after this, honestly this ending may genuinely turn people away because of just how... polarising I feel it is, I'm still curious to see where this goes but I dunno I hope Season 3 can stick the landing better than Season 2

I think they were so close to making the ending feel satisfying and they probably could have accomplished it with a few extra lines of dialogue, but it did fall a little flat for me. Like, the [spoilers, obvs] leg eating thing just sort of happened with minimal explanation of why Legoshi would do the thing he's been training himself against the whole season. However, if they had added some explanation, it would have been fine. Ex. the difference between Legoshi and Rin (and the carnivores Legoshi spends the season hunting down) isn't that Rin eats meat, but that he did it in a moment of losing control, and that it was a non-consensual act. Meanwhile Legoshi has perfect control over himself (stopping just at the leg where most carnivores could never have done that) and Louis' explicit consent because he really does make an effort to see herbivores as more than just meat. Throughout the season both he and Louis have been denying who they are as predators/prey respectively, and the finale might have felt more meaningful if it had carried the message of "this is who you are, but herbivores and carnivores can benefit and support each others' existence without denying their realities (honestly Juno and Haru and the little side stories did a better job of conveying this theme this season, which suggests this is what they were going for, they just didn't quite nail it imo)." If they'd made that difference explicit, even with just a few extra lines (god knows they had time for different dialogue when they stopped in the middle of the fight to talk for 10 minutes) I honestly think a lot more people would have liked the ending, but as it was, it seemed like a reversal of everything Legoshi & Louis accomplished throughout the season rather than a culmination of all of their efforts.
(Also full agree, the police coming in at the end after the whole season was set into motion bc Legoshi couldn't involve the police was incredibly stupid)

He continues to learn more about the type of person he wants to be, and finds difficulty in reaching that power, but we all know you can't be a hero without some degree of power. His hesitance towards eating bugs is evident enough of why he might be bluring the lines between an reluctant hero and a willing hero. The 'Instinct' motif is quite unique due to the lines bluring between sexual and hunger instincts. His understanding of others and his compassion towards herbivores is a start, but regardless if this 'instincts' will put others in danger or risk legoshi becoming a tragic hero:
Turning away from that which tempts you or causes you fear is not strength, facing it is.
and strength is not just his ability to defeat a bear, or a lion mafia but rather if he can hold onto power and not be corrupted by it.

I get there was this understanding between them, but like you say, I think the bond didn't go AS deep as the ED wanted us to feel it was. Up until the very end Louis was pretty cold and distant with Ibuki..So the realisation he loves Carnivores felt VERY sudden..And a little too convenient given Ibuki dies not long after.

@@ToHoldNothing I can understand Louis being emotionally repressed, but I still feel the realisation came a bit too late for the death to be as impactful as it could have been. Even if he wasn't willing to openly show he cared for Ibuki, we could have gotten more inner monologue hints he liked him before that scene.
I agree the characters are plenty complex, even compared to the manga. A line the anime omitted was Louis saying Lions like Ibuki couldn't understand him because they grew up sheltered - which is why it hits Louis when he sees Ibuki almost ended up like the Caiman.

I'm pretty sure she gets more Volume cover appearances than anyone after Legosi, including Louis.
I feel alot of Haru's development happened offscreen too, like overcoming her instinct to climb into Legosi's mouth, that comes up ONCE and I'm pretty sure it's never brought up again. Same as with her instinct to run from him, it's not really resolved. It just stops happening.

It´s so weird seeing a series where the strongest part it´s on the beggining, and gradually goes worse as it´s goes on.
A lot of it it´s due to the way Paru works, in one of her extras she said that the thought process is normally: She get´s and idea that she wants to implemented in the story, Legoshi has a part on it, and the rest just happens.
The focuse shifts so much from arc to arc that we never get a proper conclusion to any of the ideas presented.

I think it's the same problem with some American TV shows, where they buy the entire series because of a good pilot episode. It sort of compels the writers to keep writing the same story for money, even if they haven't actually thought about how things would proceed past a certain point.

I think that a lot of people are missing the point of Beastars. Beastars isn't a romance story. Romance is part of it, but Beastars is primarily focused on social commentary and analysis of the human condition. Legoshi and Haru's relationship is in service to THAT narrative, not the other way around. That's why there's not a whole lot of focus on it in the latter parts of the story. Legoshi's relationship with Haru is what pushes him to learn more about how his society works and how he's going to fit into it and change it, which is the true narrative. Personal growth and understanding trumps the romance, which is not only refreshing, but interesting to watch. Something else: people say that Legoshi eating Louis's foot ruins his character arc and I disagree. Legoshi's character arc wasn't about not eating meat, it was about respecting and understanding the weight of life, as was explained in his interaction with the moth. When Louis offers Legoshi his flesh, Legoshi's character arc has led to him understanding that Louis is offering him his own life force, the *future potential* of his flesh. Legoshi understands that weight because of his training and is able to confront someone who doesn't have that same understanding.

    • @Shimmering_rain
      @Shimmering_rain Рік тому

I totally agree with everything you said. It's unfortunate that our society today can't get past the romantic relationships between characters. There's nothing wrong with relationships, of course, but it does not have to be the centre of every story.
I enjoyed season 2 for the character development and the exploration by Legoshi and Louis about the philosophies behind the consumption of flesh.

I honestly dont get the hate this series is getting for post Season One; like, what more do you need from the Haru and Legoshi arch? we already covered what was important, and the way the story goes, I honestly am SOOOO stoked for the Melon arch, and the introduction of Gosha and the current Beastar 😍

    • @PlanetZoidstar

@@gabrielleharrington8234 I don't hate Season 2, I just would have liked their relationship to actually progress. Like have them actually sit down and talk out their problems, and work to get past them. Instead we get Haru doing a whole lot of nothing all season and Legosi keeps ghosting her and not telling her what's going on. They're back where they started and they've made no progress as a couple since Season 1 ended.
I am looking forward to the Melon arc but I hear it drags on quite alot and Haru becomes even more irrelevant. She was so important to Season 1 and she had more agency and involvement then. For a main character it feels the longer the story goes, the less she matters to it.

I was counting down the days for season 2 and while I did enjoy it...I did feel a little bit disappointed with some things especially with Haru barely being in it, and I don't know is it just me or did it feel rushed? My biggest complaint though, spoilers, is the fight at the end its teased that Legoshi and Riz were going to pretty much destroy each other because of how strong they are. The fights get interrupted multiple times, but the kicker for me is Legoshi trained and fought so hard to fight his instincts not to eat meat and it just goes to waste for the sake of like, 5 seconds? Was I missing something?? Might have to give the manga a read sometime. Keep up the great work Saberspark!

Super disappointed that Haru wasn't featured as much this season! Maybe I was too caught up in the romantic aspect of this show haha, but I feel like her role would be more significant since she's the catalyst of Leogsi's emotional journey. Don't get me wrong, I love how Legosi is becoming more heightened as a character and is really trying to take action towards his goal of protecting the weak, I just feel like Haru should have been more involved since she's the person who sparked this passion in Legosi in the first place.
