    Thanks for sharing Laura. I live in Florida, so we've been getting really nice temps lately. Our winters are usually 50 to 70° during the day with 40° nights. We are lucky to be able to grow a lot all year long. I've been a grower/gardener for 6 yrs and love what I do! I'm hoping to start a non profit organization this year with enough support so I can help people in need. I have lettuce, peas, beans, peppers, radish, sunshine blue blueberries, blackberries and strawberries which are in season here right now. I live in plant city which is where the commercial farms are. So gorgeous to see all the fields filled out this time of year! I need to get organizing some seeds so I can continue planting my February into spring garden.

    Just be careful where you plant your milkweed because once it's established it comes up EVERYWHERE year after year, like I spend a lot of the summer pulling milkweed babies out of my perennials haha. I do get a ton of happy monarchs, even though it took them a couple years to figure out I had milkweed lol!

      I'm in Zone 5, Wisconsin, and we literally let milkweed grow wherever it wants to - and even then, there's not that much of it. My husband mows around it if it comes up in the lawn, and in the "wild" part of the property, I help the seeds scatter far and wide. We used to be able to count on finding caterpillars on every plant. Now, we're lucky to find any at all. Even the milkweed doesn't seem to grow that well. Don't really understand it.

    Nice video Laura! I have a question and was wondering if you or anyone else might know the answer. So I absolutely love the Schefflera plant and I purchased one. The garden center actually ordered it in for me. I saw tiny browns spots on a couple leaves but they told me it was shipped and just needed to bounce back. Sad to say it was very infested with scales and I had no idea what a scale was back then! I tried to wash the leaves, and treat them with home made solutions. This was not working so I did buy a chemical to use in the soil but by then the plant was just so full and was getting scales on my other plants. I decided to toss it rather then keep using chemicals in my home. My question is ....Why are most all the Schefflera plants covered with scales in the stores? I want to buy one so bad but that was just a horrible experience! Could I start one indoors easily? Thank you to anyone who can answer

    📗✏️ Hi Laura - I’m a paper and pencil girl too! If I write it down and can see it as I go thru my seeds or whatever it is, then it’s in front of me and out of my head!!! I write notes beside of items and highlight things and it’s all there at a glance! Your raised garden system was perfect last year. Loved your set up with water to each bed. Such a pretty area that you designed as well. Veggies are happier when you can keep the weeds out of them and grow better. Much easier than in the ground! We’ve had a big garden all my life and it’s so hard to keep the weeds out of the ground than in a raised bed. Great job on designing and growing with your set up! Thanks for sharing your seeds set up. Looks just like mine but mine is in a box rather than a metal tin. 🍅🥒🌽🍠🥔🍓💜🤗

    Please introduce more herbs into your garden repertoire. Home herb gardening is something that almost everyone who cooks is doing now due to not only the cost of herbs but convenience, superior flavor, and popularity. (identifying yourself as a chef and not just a cook) Kitchen grown herbs are really popular not only for house dwellers but also and especially for those of us living in condos, town houses, or apartments. Trust me when I say, if you up your indoor and outdoor herb selection you will increase your viewer level. If you add an occasional video that includes you or your husband or both cooking a recipe using the home grown herbs (like the swiss mint you use in mojitos, cookies, desserts and teas) and vegetables right from your kitchen and garden you will also increase your viewer level. Just sayin.
    You are the first person I have met that agrees with me about sage. For me it is a strong herb that takes over the flavor of the dish. So, for me, it's good to look at but not to eat. LOL.
    Maybe just try one or two new vetegable/plant that you do not have experience with every season. We always like someone else to be the Guinea pig, (that would be you) so to speak, before trying it out ourselves. LOL.
    Did you ever cultivate that long strip of land you were talking about back in August? I can't remember if it was in the front but it was right next to a drive way or off road of some sort. What are your plans for that.
    Thank you for this video.

      Believe it or not, I used a 5 gallon galvanized bucket to grow butternut squash, on a small patio (about 6'x9'), back in my college days! It produced 8 beautiful squash by the end of the season! It did require slightly more frequent organic fertilizering schedule than if it had been in the ground. I did have to train the fine to loop the perimeter of the space, back and forth, in order to make it fit into a smaller area. Totally worth the jumble of vines 😂
      Another great option is to think vertically with gardening. With a container deep enough, you can grow onions and potatoes in a small footprint.

    I've been in love with this galvinized seed storage box since the first time I saw it in a Gardener's Supply catalog! I can't garden; but, I love the whole kit. It DOES need to be wide enough for two rows of seed packets, side-by-side. This was a relaxing video; except, it seems to have made a lot of folks even more Spring Fever(ish)! Lol! I love the links to look back at different stages and to check out some of the cool products you use. I hope you feel all better very soon. Hey Laura! I have a question that I was hoping you knew the answer to. I would like to buy a whole lot of native meadow flower seeds that are good for bees and distribute them in my area in places where there's nothing planted or only sparse grass. I was planning on going for something like bachelor's button, poppy and such. Would the seeds have any chance of growing into plants if I just scatter them over the ground? I was planning on doing this in spring when I know it will rain in the coming days.
    I want to do this because wild flowers are disappearing here in the Netherlands and pollinators are disappearing with them. I would really appreciate it if you could give me some advice to make this work.

    • @jbiebs1001
      @jbiebs1001 5 років тому +2

      LauraK They sell bulk wildflower seeds at big box stores just for this purpose. They are inexpensive and you get a lot of seed for a large field. I would act fast though as many of those seeds need freezing temperatures to germinate. The time to plant most of those was in the fall for us in the south zone 8. They will be labeled wildflower, native pollinator mix etc and in a larger size seed packet near the seeds in a lowes or home depot. A lot of those mixes have native flowers that will grow well in your climate and will reseed themselves each year. Good luck!

    • @PrairiePlantgirl
      @PrairiePlantgirl 5 років тому +2

      A lot of wildflower seed mixes are full of plants that are not native to the regions they are sold in and can become invasive in some settings. I would research native wild flowers for your area and purchase/ collect the seeds. It is good to prepare the area beforehand and it will need some weeding to remove invasives and mowing 1-2 times a year the first year or so to allow all varieties to grow up and become strong. That’s if you want to replace natives. If you just want lots of flowers, buy a mix. Both methods will attract pollinators. Native plantings can be more beneficial for the native insects and wildlife.

      SAVE THE BEES!!!!🐝😁

    • @___Laura
      @___Laura 5 років тому

      I was indeed planning on getting only native wild flower seeds. However since I plan to distribute them in public areas like a bare roadside strip and the patchy grass field in front of my apartment building, I cannot rake it in or mow it. Therefore I'm looking for seeds that are okay when scattered on top of the ground and that don't need care afterwards. My goal is not necessarily to create one dreamy meadow, but to create pitstops for pollinators and to give native plant species a chance at re-establishing themselves here.
      That being said, I bet Laura or Aaron has a thing or two to say about this. Like things I should take into consideration.
      Also as a side note, none of those stores exist here, they're quintessentially American, but we have gardencenters and I can buy (bulk) seed online :)

They lose their hot flavor and just taste like a good root vegetable, which is great because I have a very hard time digesting potatoes. Cooked radishes make an OK substitute in my diet. Not exactly a potato taste, but good in their own right.

    Laura, I’ve seen the video where you did some flowerbed planning. Can you do an updated video on replanting new plants in the flowerbed, and how to keep up with what you planted and where?
    I try to keep a drawing of my beds and number what I’ve planted, but always looking for ways to keep better records.

    You organize and write out your list just like my mind works. Thank you for staying true to your nature it really helps me grow in my garden skills. I am now organizing seeds and making my list. I feel like I'm going to be successful this year and growing food last year not so much. But I did keep all the flowers alive thanks to your lessons and the way you teach.

    Thanks! You just inspired me to organize my plans and seeds for next year. Spiral book and pencil are the only way for me too! It makes a great, portable record from year to year.

    Have you ever ordered from Seedaholic? Their seeds come with handy cards attached to the seed pack which makes organizing sooo nice !! Also they have some really neat lavender varieties, pinks and white in addition to the classic "lavender." lol

    Laura - how important are the best used by dates on seed packets since you mentioned that you might not put all your seeds in your garden this year? Is there a normal shelf life for seed packets or are they are different and if stored properly, can you keep them for years? Thanks for this informative video...I have a small beach garden and would love to start some plants by seed this year.

    Your seed storage container is awesome! Love the paper/pencil method! Question: you mentioned possible planting morning glories, is that not the plant that you referred to as bind weed and tried to get rid of at some point? Great video! Looking forward to spring and more videos :)

    If you like yellow beans , you have to try purple beans. They are the best beans! They grow purple on the stock, but when you cook them they turn green and taste just like a very sweet yellow beans. I love them best of any beans and eat them by them dinner plateful!
