Thanks Bob. I am 73, had my left knee replaced 4 weeks ago and although definitely getting better, still very sore, stiff and swollen. I have been like you, very active all my life, lots of golf, cycling, kayaking, walking, so I am told I should heal well over time. Yours has been the best video I have seen about knee replacement. One thing I was not told, truthfully, was the amount of pain you will go through in the first 3-4 weeks. Sleeping is difficult, steps are one at a time, and an occasional buckle of the knee causes extreme pain. But I am hopeful to get back to golf this Spring, as well as other activities. Thanks for your honesty and positive outlook. Good luck!

Very informative Bob. I am 74 with osteoarthritis in my left knee also. I was scheduled for full knee replacement but elected to hold off and use exercise to try to improve knee. I can walk w/o pain but come down stairs like you do while holding rail. I have found walking backwards up my 30 degree incline driveway for about 50 steps and then repeat for 7-10 times really strengthens the knees. I do this this several times per week . I also ride spin bike daily and due wall sits. Keep us up to date if your knee can improve from where it is now. If you get to the point where you can alternate legs for each step w/o out needing to hold onto the railing I think I would consider a replacement .

I did the same thing as you're doing ... I exercised a great deal and I put if off for 8 years. Finally, an orthopeadic surgeon told me that I aged, it would get worse no matter what so I gave in and went for it. They told that I would completely recover probably by 6 months whereas most people take about a year. (all because I exercise daily faithfully ... squats and lunges are a great way to strengthen your knees ... I will try the walking backwards up the incline. I know that walking backwards creates about 2x as much load on your knees than walking forward.
Good luck and congrats on the exercise dedication.

Thanks a million, Bob. I had my two knees done here in Dublin, Ireland and while my right knee is fabulous my left knees is kinda lagging and sore when I walk up or down stairs. I can cycle perfectly and my walking is ok but not perfect . I am back in the gym doing weights on my knees with no trouble and I feel all in all I am getting better. Thanks for a fabulous vid because I wa getting worried and thought my progress was too slow or stopped. Love from Ireland...

I am proud of all your efforts. They will pay off in the end. You mentioned that your left knee is lagging behind the right in getting back to normal. Pay particular attention to your form/posture when you exercise. Also, use diaphragmatic (deep) breathing techniques to control the speed during exercise. And finally, slow and steady wins the race! i.e. slow the contractions and lengthening process to get better muscle strength. (look up concentric and eccentric movement)

Keep it up, good to hear someone having progress and realizing it as such.
I'm going thru this now 3 months into it. Lots of emotional ups and downs. Just saying

My Physio therapist actually lay on the bench and demonstrated it herself. She demonstrated how it gives your leg good extension too as her knees were on the edge of the bench and her legs hung down. She was excellent. I then follwed her advice on my bed each day and it certinly loosens up the leg. Great for flexion AND extension,

I believe this man is getting some bad advice from PT. They should not be hurting you.
